Penny Marshall Has Died

She was 75 and died of complications from diabetes.

Marshall’s triumphs as a director broke new ground the male-dominated movie industry, and she became the first female director to score a $100 million gross with “Big” in 1988. She turned the financial trick again with “A League of Their Own” four years later.

Sad news indeed. Never, ever missed an episode of "Laverne & Shirley" during its peak years ie the Milwaukee based shows.

I might watch "League of their Own" tonight in her memory.

I can probably quote most of it! It's been running on one of the cable channels every day for awhile now. I end up watching the end at the Baseball Hall of Fame and the ladies playing every once in awhile still. I've always wondered who those real players are. My favorite part is Madonna's song at the end.

Never missed Laverne and Shirley and I've seen every episode at least 10 times since. I still have the Fabian episode in my DVR with a "do not erase" checkmark next to it. I still laugh so hard I cry. And the one where her fireman boyfriend dies, I cry through the whole thing.

So sad. Another loss from my childhood.

Such a talented director. She had such compassion for all of her characters. Big and A League of Their Own are true all-time classics, and Awakenings is wonderful. I will always have a soft spot for Riding in Cars with Boys.

Penny was special. I loved all her movies. And I always felt that any actress could have played Shirley but only Penny could have played Laverne. She was the reason that sitcom worked IMO.

Back in the day, I never missed an episode of Happy Days or Laverne & Shirley. I think my favourite episode was when the pair raised some fast money at a science lab to buy tickets to a snooty function. The catch being, Shirley was denied food, and Laverne, sleep. Their ensuing physical comedy together was genius.

Big, A League Of Their Own, and Awakenings, are three of my favourite movies, too.
