My favourite program of theirs!!! Loved that bit of the new exhibition program. :cheer:

Anything sung by Patrick Watson or Sleeping at Last would look amazing on them. The kind of Sad pop/indie songs. It is stunning :drama:
(I'm also rooting for a Florence + the machine program or EX one day...)
I agree that both Patrick Watson and Florence + the Machine would work very well for them. My taste in music runs very much towards indie pop/rock, so anything in that vein would suit my personal preference as well. I made some other music suggestions further up the thread - I would love to see them skate a more story-based program (I suggested earlier that something fantasy-ish like the Lord of the Rings soundtrack would probably work very well for them if they wanted to try a more character-based, less abstract program) and I also think Celtic music in the vein of Enya or Loreena McKennitt (the artist who sang "Dante's Prayer" to which Michelle Kwan had a famous exhib program) would suit them while being different enough from their usual choices. I would also say Tori Amos would work for them, but I loved Silverstein & Pekarek's Tori Amos FD from the 99-00 season so much that I think it will always be the beginning and ending of Tori Amos ice dances for me.

The difference is neither Hanyu nor Javier are Canadians! Thank God for Orser. He had a narrow escape there!:dog:

I see what you mean... obviously ;)

Now, whoever becomes coach, moreover in an int'l school, has to put his/her flag in his/her pocket otherwise he/she will get for sure into trouble... soon or late. It's obvious!

It is not a trick phrase for heaven's sake.....Neither Brian nor Tracey nor Marie-France nor Patch can go on the ice and skate the program for their students.
So you are saying that "the rest" is just going out on the ice and doing what they have been taught ("the technical makeup") and there is nothing else to their training beyond what you have described? and that a similar understanding is inherent in both Orser and Gadbois' training programmes?

Me too!!! I would also love to see them skate to "Cucurrucucu Paloma" from the same soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqVh2Pig-vE

That's from Talk to Her.

I did think there might be an interesting Tango somewhere in Almovodar's back catalogue. I know Volver is a Carlos Gardel song, but I'm not sure it is sung it would pass the tango test as within the film- it's more flamenco?

Interview with Guillaume in L'Equipe.

I don't have a subscription for the magazine, so I can't summarize it.
It's a funny Q&A:
How long to you spend each day in front of the TV ? does Netflix matter ? I don't own a TV ! As for Netflix it depends, some days I don't watch anything. Sometimes I spend three hours... On average, let's way an hour a day. I subscribed to Netflix when we settled in Canada in 2014 because I didn't have any TV.
His best TV interview memory: the one last week with Morgan and Vanessa on Daily Sport because I loved the fact it was the four of us.
His fav TV serie: Le coeur a ses raisons, a canadian serie on Youtube we've been watching for years with Gabriella because it's so funny.
A movie he'll rewatch endlessly: The holiday with Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet. I like this movie and every time I take the plane it's among the on-demand movies so I watch it all the time.
His fav character from a TV serie: Gaby from Desperate Housewives because she's really funny and sassy. She makes me laugh, I quite like her.
A TV broadcast he'd like to participate: I wouldn't do a survivalist program so I'd say DWTS. BTW Meryl Davis and Charlie White, did participate in 2014.
His fav cartoon: I feel a bit ashamed but I love Totally spies.
Foreign TV broadcast which should be adapted in France: Dancing on ice, we participated to the British version because Christopher Dean was among the judges. We were impressed by the level of the celebrities participating.
Guilty pleasure on TV: I watch an australian broadcast about plastic surgery on Netflix where brides want to have an plastic surgery makeover before their wedding but it's never done on time. It's funny.

I love that CANADA has an international dance school and our coaches care about ALL of their skaters. If people want to make snide and snarky comments about our coaches perhaps they should open their own school and put their biases aside like they think CANADIAN coaches seem to have.

I can make snarky innuendos too. ;)

Interview with Guillaume in L'Equipe.

It's mainly about what he watches on TV and not about skating. And here-below is the full translation of what was in the paper (not on the website) a few days ago.

- How long do you spend watching TV ?
GC : I don't have a TV ! Does Netflix count ? It depends, some days I don't watch anything at all. Sometimes I watch it for 3 hours. Let's say I spend an average of 1 hour [watching]. I got a subscription to Netflix when we came to Canada in 2014 because I found myself without a TV.

- Your best memory on a TV set ?
- Let's say Daily Sport on Infosport because we did it with Vanessa [James] and Morgan [Ciprès], who won the pairs' bronze medal in Milano one week ago. We loved doing this, all the four of us.

- You favorite show ?
- "Le Coeur a ses raisons" [Sins of Love in English], a canadian TV series that has been making us laugh for years, Gabriella and I. You can find it on YouTube. Why ? Because it's fun.

- The movie that is aired 512 times but that you'll watch again ?
- It's not on TV but I'll say The Holiday with Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet. I like this movie and every time I take a flight, it's on the movies list, so I watch it again.

- Your favorite series character ?
- I'd say Gaby from Desperate Housewives. Because she is really funny, sassy (he says sassy in English, which is translated by "insolent" = cheeky, disrespectful]. She makes me laugh, I like her.

- The show you would like to be in ?
- Not something like Koh Lanta [one of the French versions of Survivor]. I'd say Dance wit the Stars. Speaking of it, Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who were [ice] dance Olympic champions in 2014, were in DWTS in the US, but as opponents.

- Your [fave] cartoon ?
- I'm ashamed... But I adore Totally Spies. And I remember I used to watch "Debout les Zouzous" (I have no idea what it is :D, but it can be translated by Wake up Kiddos), with lots of cartoons in a row and I liked "Martin Matin".

- The foreign show you'd like to see adapted in France ?
- Dancing on Ice ! It's the ice skating version of DWTS. We were part of the British version a few weeks ago because Christopher Dean (the 1984 Olympic champion who choreographed their short dance) was in the jury and we were impressed by the level of [skating] of celebrities who were in that show.

- The show you are ashamed to watch ?
- I watch Australian plastic surgery shows on Netflix. They have this show where gals are about to get married. They all want a new face for their wedding day but it's never ready for D Day. It's funny...

EDIT : Oops, sorry, I hadn't seen Cocotaffy's post !

If Guillaume is ever on DWTS, the competition is over before it even starts... A Guillaume/Loic Nottet DWTS face-off would be more interesting.
I'm saying that, but Nathalie Pechalat came 2nd, while being the best dancer. Her opponent had a "better" story, and it's still a TV show :D

@cholla and @cocotaffy Thanks for the translations!

I sometimes buy L'Equipe articles but this looked like a short Q&A, so I wasn't interested in paying for it. In 2015 (?) L'Equipe had an interesting Q&A with Guillaume in which they talked about his favourite artists. I can check if I have it archived. I rarely save interviews but that was interesting, so I might still have a copy of it.

ETA: I found it. The article had been in L'Equipe in 2015. In the article Guillaume says his favourite movie director is Xavier Dolan and some of his favourite artists, at the time, were Sophie Calle, Robert Mapplethorpe and Thomas Ruff. However, it is good to keep in mind that this interview is pretty old and his favourites may have changed.

I hope that more journalists would talk about the art with him/them.

I think you know better. Both Orser and Gadbois focus a great deal on the headset of a team and they have experts in everything off-ice at the ready. But when the names are called it is the team and the ice and their relationship with the ice.

So actually, if fans don't care, they might indeed be the only ones ;)

I really don't care about the number of medals that P/C or any of my favorite skaters have. Of course, I like to see them win. But it's not the medals which make them the skaters that they are. That's all them and I'd consider them just as mesmerizing and fabulous and extraordinary if they finished last.

I didn't say I cared for the number of medals they won or didn't win, I said some people did and I explained why ;) Actually, my fave skaters seldom win. P/C are the exception.

Me too!!! I would also love to see them skate to "Cucurrucucu Paloma" from the same soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqVh2Pig-vE

That song is so beautiful from the "Talk To Her" soundtrack. Funny enough, I used to want to see Marie-France and Patrice skate to it when I discovered it in 2003/2004-ish. I think it would be a lovely departure in tone for P&C, the Caetano Veloso version anyways. There's even a live version I found with strings that's a bit more grand, but the song is great nonetheless.

I'd love to see P&C go back to indie pop/rock, selfishly, because I loved "To Build A Home" so, so, so much. I think anything by Lord Huron would be nice. A bit warmer, earthier take. "Ends Of The Earth" would be too... obvious, but most of their other work is just perfect.

Or they could be the team that takes on Karl Jenkins' "Adiemus" successfully. They have the glide and speed to do it, I think, but it might be too out there for them?

Canada as a country has nothing to do in this discussion. I think all debates about G&G versus V/M have been far too poluted by pure nationalistic aspects hence no need to play the Canadian game especially in this thread.

The Gadbois school is a private business with coaches from various countries and skaters from at least 8 different countries. Furthermore, Gadbois became famous after a young French couple, trained by Canadian and French coaches, won the World championships in 2015 at the age of 19 and 20.

And yes, freedom of speech is essential to exchange our views on various topics.

I must admit I was surprised the first time I heard about this promise to V/M as Gadbois, at the time this promise was made, was very ... very far from being what it became AFTER G&G won their first World championships in March 2015. Additionnally, I would not make too much fuss about it given it was one promise among several ones made to various people.
Probably you would understand it better if you knew that Dubreul/Lauzon were mentors to Virtue/Moir since their own competitive days and also helped them a lot during the 2013/2014 season when V/M felt they were not getting what they needed from Zoueva. Virtue/Moir said that if they were to return then only to Dubreuil/Lauzon. Plus, they used Montreal as their training base for shows and worked with Marie France on choreography for their exhibitions after Sochi (already before Gabriella and Guillaume went there). So it was not simply a promise made to two of many (or several) people.

MFD almost disappeared from the K&C (with G&G) and declarations to the press were not great either.
What declarations? Obviously I haven't read/seen the interviews in question, so could you please give me an example (or two, since you are talking in plural)?
I won't expand too much on the K&C. Each time G&G are about to perform a short or a free dance in an int'l competition, one can see their age, the music, their SB, the points to beat and ... the name of their two coaches. I just expect both coaches to be in the K&C. It's just the way I see it.
As for this part, I have to ask - what are you talking about? Until Olympics, Marie France was in the K&C with Virtue/Moir only at their competitions in Canada (that is, Autumn Classic, Skate Canada and Canadian Nationals). She was not with them at NHK Trophy or at GP Final. She simply was not leaving Canada during the season, instead opting to stay with (any of) their teams training in Montreal. So, of course she was not at competitions outside Canada. It had nothing to do with P/C or V/M specifically. I am sure, if P/C had had a competition in Canada during the season, she would have been with them, the same as she was with V/M only at their competitions in Canada. So this is certainly a weak argument.

To be honest I'm so used to see them in Gadbois, and I love MFD and Romain and Patrice... so I guess it would be weird to see them go. Plus I just can't picture them elsewhere lol.
But like we said, que sera sera...

And MF was at Euros with P/C (and FB/S, L/LG, M/D, and G/PS)

Also, you have to look at what other teams were at the comps. Autumn Classic, well that's in Montreal. No surprise she was there. Skate Canada had four Gadbois teams (V/M, H/D, S/D, S/F). At Cup of China, P/C were the only Gadbois team, so it made sense that only one coach would go with them. Not surprising that Romain did. The same was true for IdF. At Canadian Nationals, there was V/M, S/F, Lajoie/Lagha and Fisher/Mallet-Paquette. Again, four teams.

Probably you would understand it better if you knew that

She did leave Canada during the season because she attended Zagreb (at the same time at the GPF) with the two Spanish teams. As far as I can see, she chose not to attend French Masters, Finlandia, IDF, COC or GPF or French Nationals, just as Romain chose to attend all events P/C went to all season. I'm not stating grievance at this- a team really only needs one coach to attend an event. But one has to accept there is a point of difference between her and Romain: i.e. the thought of Romain NOT attending one of their events is unfeasible. I consider Romain their primary coach, and Marie-France and Patrice part of an extended coaching team (along with Catherine Pinard, who is actually listed as a coach on their isu page), because primary coaches attend their team's events, and the idea that a primary coach for a team would not attend their first six events of the season for one team is ridiculous.

I think the all the coaches are all the coach for all the teams strategy is a bit of a have your cake and eat it device that doesn't ring true.

You also eluded to their being a hint of nationalistic preference in the coaches there in earlier posts. If you go back to the kiss and cry for other teams, M-F was not always there. This wasn't just something that occured to G&G but happened with M&Z and T&S. M-F was in the K-n-C for V&M in their FD because they were the final skaters of the night and her coach duties were done at the Oly's. She was not there in the SD for T&S and pretty sure for M&Z.

aka your posts... "The first two seasons were great but afterwards I feel like the general atmosphere changed. MFD almost disappeared from the K&C (with G&G) and declarations to the press were not great either. What a contrast with Brian Orser coaching both Hanyu and Javier!"

" I expect both coaches to be in the K&C. It's just the way I see it. Of course, you can think differently and it's perfectly fine."

"Now, whoever becomes coach, moreover in an int'l school, has to put his/her flag in his/her pocket otherwise he/she will get for sure into trouble... soon or late. It's obvious!"

Yes, of course, you are right. I had forgotten about Europeans. But it also was in the second half of the season, shortly before the Olympics, when teams training in Montreal had mostly finished polishing their programs etc., and probably didn't need Marie France for things like that as much as they did in the first half of the season.

She did leave Canada during the season because she attended Zagreb (at the same time at the GPF) with the two Spanish teams.
Yes, I had forgotten about that as well. But that was a different situation. Two of the three main coaches were at the GPF, and one obviously had to go with H/K and S/D. Patrice as the technical coach is more needed at the most important competitions.
As far as I can see, she chose not to attend French Masters, IDF, COC or GPF or French Nationals, just as Romain chose to attend all events P/C went to all season.

I'm not stating grievance at this- a team really only needs one coach to attend an event. Yes, it can be viewed that way, but, still, P/C have said several times (don't ask me to point to specific interviews since that was some time ago, and I can't search for them now) that they spend about equal time in training with all their (main) coaches. Also, that doesn't show favoritism towards V/M, and what I said about Marie France staying in Montreal during most competitions that took place outside Canada in the first half of the season still stands. Golden Spin was the only exception.

I think if you guys have ideas for them, you can always DM them on twitter or Instagram, after all WeaPo got "Je suis malade" via an email suggestion !

That doesn't show favoritism towards V/M.........

I disagree, but only to a degree. Attending one team's three of their first six events and also likely their high performance camp and none of another teams does show a difference in attitude to those teams. Whether it can be classed as favouritism is another matter. In terms of managing the conflict of interest that was set up with V/M went to Gadbois it makes sense to assign primary coaches to each of the teams. The idea of being to talk strategy and tactics with any team when also doing the same with their main competitor is an impossible situation and also a completely unprofessional one. Of course when V/M went to Gadbois, Marie-France and Patrice were guaranteed the gold and silver medal for their teams at the next Olympics; and they were the only guaranteed winners at that event. If Romain had been named as their primary coach with them just part of their coaching team, there was a possibility of Marie-France and Patrice not being seen as the coach of the winning Olympic team. I think part of the presentation of what Gadbois is and how operates is to ensure that the MF/P brand is put on all their teams achievements; and it's more this and the ongoing conflict of interest that would be endemic in doing things the way they present themselves as doing things that is an issue for me, rather than "favouritism"; and that a conflict of interest that I think will arise further over the next four years leading in to Beijing, and which P/C and Romain would be better off out of.
