Netflix/Prime/Hulu/BritBox Binge Watching: Coronavirus Edition

Has anyone watched The Unforgivable on Netflix? It looks good but I'm not really up for serious and depressing right now. I have it in my queue to watch later.

Right now I plan on watching "The Woman in the House Across the Street From the Girl in the Window" with Kirsten Bell. It's described as crime-comedy so I think that will fit my mood today.
 
Speaking of Netflix.. my friend and I just finished watching four seasons of "The Last Kingdom." I would highly recommend it for anyone who loves series like Knightfall and Vikings. There are some nice bits of humor mixed in with all the political drama and battle scenes (of which there are quite a few). Alexander Dreymon, who plays the lead character Uhtred of Bebbanburg, does a great job, as does David Dawson as Alfred, King of Wessex. Their scenes together crackle with tension, even when they are supposed to be allies. The show went downhill a bit after Alfred died (his son Edward is still too young to make a fitting antagonist for Uhtred), but it still kept me watching.

I watched it. It isn’t really funny enough to be a good parody. One of the premises is the death of a child, which just . . . isn’t a good premise for a comedy.

Yeah, they kind of lost me with two of the main characters having suffered a tragic death in the family. I get that it was supposed to be a bonding moment for them, but it just doesn't work for a show that's supposed to have a comedic bent. The huge glass of wine was funny as hell, but that was the only thing that really made me laugh in the first episode, so I didn't keep going.
 
Gawd I love a good Halloween episode. I heard a wee bit about the live episode "Dead Line" from the "Inside No. 9" series and it did not disappoint. In fact I thought it was fantastic and put together so well. On Amazon/Brit Box.
 
So I went back and read more about "The Woman in the House Across the Street From the Girl in the Window" and decided to watch it. It is a parody of a genre. Classic premise, an isolated middle-class woman who has a life tragedy that leaves her medicated and drunk while spending too much time being a voyeur. But one day she witnesses a murder. When she tries to report this crime to various authority figures no one believes her because she drinks too much, takes mood-stabilizing medication and has a history of mental instability. Eventually, she even comes to doubt herself, but in the end is proved right.

The movie I recognized the most in this was The Woman in the Window which was horribly bad. I think people found this not funny because they played these parts so seriously while making fun of a bad movie that included the death of a child. They setup the most over the top, would never happen death for a child and had Kirsten acting like no one could have foreseen or prevented it. Then you add the unrealistic responses to tragedy. YMMV and I can see how many wouldn't find the topic funny at all. I would say the character's reactions and responses to the tragedy would be the part that is supposed to be funny depending on how black your soul is. I didn't find it funny but I wasn't all that horrified by it because the entire premise was so unrealistic.

If you've seen enough of these hysterical woman murder mystery movies and want to see someone poke fun at it, this series has enough moments to make it worth it IMO. It's not the best parody out there but it's also not the worst. They played out the most ridiculous premises so seriously that I had several moments where I couldn't help but laugh.

I laughed the most at:
the sex scene montage. There was just enough offbeat from the classic sex scenes in movies to make me LMAO. It was just ridiculous while pretending to be serious. :rofl: Kirsten Bell's reactions to her ex-husband's revelations about the repairman also had me laughing. I mean she had a guy fixing her mailbox for 3 years and never found that to be odd. Plus ignoring all the noises from the attic. :rofl:

I watched "The Tinder Swindler" on Netflix and wanted to shout GET HIM! at the screen. I applaud the women who came forward for this true crime story. This guy is a clever, worthless POS.
 
Spider-Man No Way Home will be released on digital in six months or so on the Starz Chanel. This is because Sony owns the rights and sold it to Starz. Too bad because I am not paying for another streaming service.

I don't know if anyone else has been watching Pam and Tommy. I did see people get up in arms about it being on Disney (the family channel). However I think Sebastian Stan and Lily James are fantastic. And even Seth Rogan playing a straight role does a good job.

I don't have a problem with the movie but I simply don't care about these two. I'm watching "The Truth Will Out" on ACORN....good Swedish mystery with moments of levity to counter the dark storyline.

I started watching this last night. I don’t know a ton about the story, but I’m invested. I agree about the acting. Fair warning if you’re considering watching, there’s a lot of nudity.
 
Just noticed that BritBox has added 'The Bill', which I'm very excited about as it was unmissable TV for me in the 90s (before it was turned into a soap opera in its latter years and I stopped watching).
 
Season 2 of Love is Blind is up on Netflix. Will save this for the hiatus between the Olympics and the start of Sanditon season 2, Outlander Season 6 and Bridgerton season 2 in March.
 
Finally got Paramount+ so I can watch the new season of Star Trek: Discovery, but am hooked on The Gilded Age instead. Jury is out on 1883 so far though.
 
I’m still loving 1883, and it was announced today it was picked up for a second season. There will also be a new series in the Dutton family saga titled 1932 as the Dutton face the challenges of that era.
 
If anyone in Canada (I assume it’s just available in Canada) desperately needs some levity in their life, and you’re not above a good poop joke, I highly recommend Last One Laughing on Amazon prime. It’s a bunch of comedians put in a room together trying to make each other laugh. Somehow it really works. I think there’s just something really appealing about watching the playfulness between the comedians. Both my husband and I laughed so much.
 
I thoroughly enjoyed “This is Going to Hurt” currently streaming on BBC iplayer.
 
I just got done watching the first season of "This is Ladyparts" I can't wait for season two! This show is so well done and so funny! It helps that I love punk rock but I think even if you don't, you would like this show.
 
Just started Love is Blind - Japan while waiting for the next episode of Love is Blind - US Season 2. While I binge-watched the latter, I'm tring to restrain myself for the latter. Some of the relationships actually work, but others are really tortured. and painful to watch; that's the same thing for Married at First Sight. Why do I do this to myself? :confused:
 
I binged Yellowjackets earlier this month, on a Showtime trial. It’s kind of a cross between a female Lord of the Flies and Lost. It goes back and forth in time between the crash in 1996 and the present day. It’s absolutely fantastic and I’m obsessed. The characters are very complex and not entirely likeable, but I’m very invested. Christina Ricci is awesome and unrecognizable. I love how Juliette Lewis and Melanie Lyskey look “real” - the former as someone who clearly has lead a rough life and the latter as a normal looking middle aged woman. They also did a great job casting the younger and older version of the characters.

Plus, the music is fabulous.
