NCAA Gymnastics

And we begin anew. My DVR is showing 4 meets this coming weekend.
  • Missouri at Georgia Friday the 8th at 7 on SEC
  • Arkansas at LSU Friday at 8:45 also on SEC
  • Kentucky at Alabama Friday at 9 on ESPNU
  • The Best of Utah meet Saturday at 9 on BYUTV
This should be interesting. Who trained well through the crud? Will there be signals that teams are addressing racial issues? And I am REALLY looking forward to hearing less screaming!

Being on the right coast, the NCAAs coverage is heavily focused on the SEC, so I was really happy to see BIG10 and Mountain Rim this weekend. We get so little PAC12 that my heart did a little happy dance when my DVR picked up UCLA/Utah on the 19th. It’s on ESPNU.

I've been watching B1G women's gymnastics since 4 PM EST today on B1G Network and I was SO excited that my Bucks won their tri-meet over MSU and Illinois today! They did a really nice job especially on beam and FX. :cheer: I've actually been watching quite a bit of NCAA gymnastics this season but today has been really fun to see some new teams besides the SEC (not that I mind seeing them every Friday night but sometimes it's nice to see other teams). There are some great gymnasts at all the schools right now and I'm so happy that they've been able to have their seasons so far. Today's coverage has also been a nice alternative to that other sporting event that's going on in Tampa tonight, LOL  :p

Utah may have won that meet tonight but I liked UCLA's gymnastics better. They have more variety, more personality, and were just more interesting. Utah seemed very cookie cutter and all the girls seem to do the same things. They're good but they're boring. I hope UCLA peeks at the right time so they can do well in the post season. Their beam rotation had as much personality as their FX routines! :cheer:

Snark. Monmouth vs Iona (a really important game, NOT) mens basketball had 4:13 left when UCLA/Utah was supposed to start. It took the men TWENTY SIX minutes to complete the game, so my area lost 1 1/2 rotations before gym came on. And I wasn’t paying attention to the crawl and missed that they started on time on the app. Aaaaaaargh!

I agree that Utah is a bit boring as are many other teams. I’m chalking it up as different preparation during the crud, before teams were allowed to practice together. Some coaches clearly had their teams working on a consistent set of skills. Others seem to have let their teams do more individual work.

That game going way over upset me too! I was able to get the app up and running on my phone for a while but I had missed most of the first part of the meet by that point and it was well into the second rotation when it finally started on the channel. I hate when this type of thing happens! :(

My TiVo is set to record the Big10, Big12 and SECs on Saturday. Is there any place to watch PACs?

VPN to Canada or UK and you should get the Pac12 International YouTube stream. Bonus is that you can rewind for a pretty long period, at least on desktop.

For me Saturday will be Pac12 day and Sunday Big 10 (via BTNplus archive - have to cancel the subscription right after). I can catch up on the two SEC sessions Monday and Tuesday before Worlds starts. Will have to stay off Twitter I think!

ETA - Mountain Rim conference should be good to watch too (BYU, Boise St, Southern Utah). That might be Friday, will have to check. BYU has so many seniors (7) with counting routines, I hope they can pull it off.

Thank you for that schedule! I was losing my mind trying to remember everything and this will be so helpful. You rock! :cheer:

Denver was SO GOOD in that meet! Oklahoma really didn't have their best meet there but they also weren't a total disaster so this was an awesome win for Denver. :cheer:

BTW-Has anyone else been watching college gymnastics coverage since like 1 PM today?! My head is spinning from so many unexpected results but it's also been a ton of fun to see all these underdog teams have awesome meets. I can't watch the Pac-12 championships but I'm still following that one online (Go UCLA!). Apparently if you're an underdog or at the very least not the favorite, you have a huge chance of winning the championship since that's what keeps happening today, LOL

Does anyone have an easy to read schedule for regionals? The one on ESPN makes my head hurt.

Honestly, if you don't read The Balance Beam situation you'll often miss the most important implications of the meets. I was 🤦‍♀️ when Amanda Borden said that Washington's season wasn't over during their unfortunate Pac12 beam rotation.

I hadn't watched their conference meet but    that my alma mater Temple made it to regionals!!! :cheer2:

I tried to keep up yesterday, but got sea sick from switching streams. Tonight, I’m all in on Morgantown.

:cheer: :cheer2: :cheer: :cheer2: Michigan! Go Blue! They were disappointing at B1G, but they were very great today! A record bar rotation! The commentators seemed to keep forgetting that they were in the lead and kept saying that they were competing for the second spot.

So all of the top seeds made it through their regional finals tonight and now the #1-8 ranked teams in the country will all go to Nationals. Seriously? All of them made it through without incident? I find that very hard to believe especially after what I watched tonight from the SLC final (IMO, some teams had their mistakes count for more than others....one girl had at least 3 decent bobbles in her beam routine and still got a 9.825  ) and it makes me wonder about the other finals. I was out and could only watch one of them live tonight. :(

Shout out to Kentucky who was SOOO good tonight, and were also great last night. I feel like they were under marked a few too many times both days but heck, I'm just a fan...what do I know. Oh well. Why did I ever think that judging would make sense in college gymnastics?! LOL

As a figure skating fan, I’m well aware that I shouldn’t be comparing scores across meets, but my karma’s a bitch heart wants to swap in one of the two 197.6 team, Ky or ASU, in place of ‘Bama.

The process as a whole was unsatisfying. There were a lot of complaints about who ended up at what regional. The scoring was loose, to put it mildly. And it seemed to benefit the teams that were the top two seeds in the finals. The judges didn't seem to have the appetite for any upsets.

Ok, everybody. Buckle up! Session 1 is on ESPN2 in less than 5 minutes.
