Nathan Chen Fan Thread #2

Xfinity commercial

Nathan and JLB with a fan in Nashville. I assume this was during Champs Camp.

Reminder: Team Panasonic IG live this evening at 8:30pm ET

Short Raf interview. According to Google Translate, he says we may see the Mozart program again in the future although it's not clear where or when.

Scott Hamilton presenting Nathan the Champion Cup at the medal ceremony.

Congratulations from GPI to their Nats medalists and Olympics bound skaters.

Congratulations from the Ivy League

The injury thing bothers me. I wonder how severe it is / how much it affects him. This will nag at me until the Olympics

Maybe not Injured to the point of 'I can't skate', but rather 'let's protect the current injury'.

Definitely in PT daily with a number of modalities being applied to keep the healing process going.
I was quite concerned at Nationals for a while - then I got over it. At practice, I saw him grimace more than once and he was constantly flexing his leg and rubbing a hip. I thought he did noticeably fewer jumps that usual. Raf stood in the background and didn't say much. It reminded me of Nationals in San Jose in 2018, when Nathan was sick. Then, during short program warm-up, he again kept flexing that leg and did only 4-5 jumps in total - each quad and 2-3 3axels. Not usual for Nathan. However, he was able to land the warm-up jumps without a problem and had a great short.

When the free program came, it was a different story. He seemed to be back to normal and warm-up looked fine. Lots of jumps and no signs of pain that I saw. It wasn't perfect, but I am NOT going to expect Nathan to be perfect every time. When he got up from the face plant and laughed, it was sort of joyful for me. Then, when we read the quip to Jackie Wong at the press conference about (paraphrase) "I looked at Jackie and 'face plant'", we laughed out loud.

No one has a better handle on all of this than Nathan. I'm thinking this - whatever it is - is sort of chronic and he is managing it. It seems to be better sometimes and worse at other times. I choose to have confidence that he is managing well.

ETA - That face plant was a real spread eagle - both arms and both legs spread out. I sort of wish there were more photographs of it. What else can you do but laugh.

Not a photo, but just posted a video of the Rocketman step sequence from opposite judges’ side, face plant included. You can hear people around me going “ouch” and my friend saying “omg!” when it happened. Really fun to see him laugh it off. ?

Thanks. This does put it somewhat in perspective

Nathan appeared in the latest issue of Vogue magazine, sporting a $5000 Gucci suit.
TBH I prefer what he wore for the SPUR photo shoot, but the outfit does match the Bennie and the Jets lyrics (electric boots and mohair suit)

NBC fluff

Backstage video at Nats

LOL - if you think the shirt he wore at Nats for the FS caused a stir, imagine what it would be like in the pbp threads if he wore something like that in Beijing!

I adore Nathan, but that is just AWFUL.

I hate that the mens event is last at the Games. Nathan's gold is the one I want most badly, and I have to wait until right the end to see if he gets it. I don't think the U.S will win the Team Gold, so it will probably be his one shot of the Gold unless the U.S pulls a fairly big upset in the Team Event.

Uhm, you need to re-examine the schedule.

Feb 4 (evening of the 3rd in the USA) - TE Men's SP, Dance RD, Pairs SP
Feb 6 (evening of the 5th in the USA) - TE Women's SP, Men's FS
Feb 7 (evening of the 6th in the USA) - TE Pairs FS, Dance FD, Women's FS
Feb 8 (evening of the 7th in the USA) - Men's SP
Feb 10 (evening of the 9th in the USA) - Men's FS
Feb 12 (early morning in the USA) - Dance RD
Feb 14 (evening of the 13th in the USA) - Dance FD
Feb 15 (early morning in the USA) - Women's SP
Feb 17 (early morning in the USA) - Women's FS
Feb 18 (early morning in the USA) - Pairs SP
Feb 19 (early morning in the USA) - Pairs FS

And a Team USA gold in the TE wouldn't be nearly the upset many people believe.

OMG. I have trial the 2nd week of February! :wall:

It's a case that won't settle and the Men will compete while I'm working 16 hours a day. WHY

And I have to start work early on the morning of the 15th and I can't get out of it. :wuzrobbed And it's not even the kind of work where I can have skating on in the background. I should at least be able to see some of the women's SP, but missing the later groups is going to be torture.

Same boat! Trial is a minute-by-minute, can't divert any attention which means I can't even follow results

Has this ever been the order of disciplines before?

In 1980 and 1984, I recall it was Pairs->Ice Dance->Men->Women. Maybe even in 1976

From 1988 onward, I recall it was Pairs->Men->Ice Dance->Women

No, it's never been this order. Dance was only added in 1976 but even before then, I don't think it ever went Men-Women-Pairs.
