Michelle Kwan (Threads Merged)

Was the 8 revs a feature in 2006?
I've not kept up with the most recent changes but I feel pretty certain that 8revs in any position (6 for the pairs) was a feature from the inception of IJS (the theory back when doing something simple and well should be rewarded was still part of the plan so someone holding even a basic position for an extended number of revs should get a level) . It was then changed to only be a feature if coupled with a difficult variation.

I remember thinking - I wish they'd leave the old rules in place for adult skaters, or even better apply the pairs rules of 6 because its a lot harder for us than the elites

This is great, but sadly ambassadors have been had difficulty getting confirmed due to "politics" (ahem, Senator Josh Hawley in particular is to blame).

Hawley was born in 1979, so he'll know who the Kween is :glamor: ... and I think she will skate by ... I believe she will walk into that Senate Confirmation Hearing feeling very deeply that her magic ? still works there ✨ ... Long live the Kween!

I was listening to Politics Girl yesterday. She commented that the biggest blockages to confirmations are Hawley and Cruz. From what I understand Cruz is part of the committee that puts these people forward. However when it comes to the final step, he is just being a blockage to "give it to the Dems" and make things as difficult as possible.

But that is the whole Republican agenda. Their whole motivation is to make life as difficult as possible for the Dems so then the Dems get blamed for not doing anything. Of course the GOP supportive media is not going to report anything otherwise.

OTBT thread (where there's some political discussion):

ETA - Nice to see support from the figure skating community & beyond in both her Twitter replies as well as on her IG: https://www.instagram.com/p/CXhQBPMvIhs/
Oh gosh, I looked at the Twitter comments looking for supportive messages from skaters I know, but there was so much ignorant crap I had to wade through that I gave up. I enjoyed the posts on IG, however.

Don't worry about the confirmation. You're gonna skate through.

Karen Tumulty
You can show yourself out now, Will.

Sorry. Off to the penalty box.

George Conway
lutz of luck there

I'm sure that at some point some f*ckwit Republican will pull out the "she's a skater, what does she know about diplomacy" stuff. Luckily the Kween has pretty good qualifications on the diplomacy side of things too.

Sorry if this has been mentioned already, but FWIW it appears that Belize does not have a permanent ice rink. The only reference I could find online about skating ice in Belize was about a Russian touring company having to bring tank ice to the country for their shows.

It would be nice if the media pointed out that she earned a BA in International Studies with a Minor Political Science and Masters in International Relations :soapbox:

. . . where are you Globetrotting Phil!

So will Michelle have to live in Belize full-time once she is confirmed? Don’t really know how ambassadorships work or what the living arrangements/expectations are.

? one of my old Kwaniac friends says she hates politics but would call Cruz and Hawley's office and say she would join a political phone bank against them if they block the Kween's appointment ?... Indeed, beware of the Wrath of Kwan

... ? there are millions of people that would say one of the highlights of their life was paying $20 to see Michelle Kwan ... Imagine the political implications of that ?

"And [Michelle Kwan] has matured so much, Greg, in this past year. She's comfortable with her skating, with the crowd. She takes time to smile. What were you doing when you were 14?" ~ Sandra Beszic, CBS Commentator at the 1995 World Figure Skating Championships
