Memories of 40 years at NHK Trophy!

The very first skating competition I attended was the 1996 NHK Trophy at the Namihaya Dome in Osaka. There was a pretty amazing roster that I probably didn’t fully appreciate at the time.

Men - Elvis Stojko won skating to something martial artsy. :blah: Ilia Kulik was second and Dmitri Dmitrenko :inavoid: third. Scott Davis, Eric Millot, Philippe Candeloro and Takeshi Honda also competed (Todd Eldredge withdrew). The thing I remember most vividly was being highly amused by the 花投げコーナー/flower throwing corner that the organisers had designated mainly for the Candeloro fans to throw their flowers from.

Ladies - Maria Butyrskaya won with Tonia Kwiatkowski and her hair cutter second and Julia Vorobieva and her spins. Fumie Suguri and Shizuka Arakawa also competed. Oh and FSU’s first Gay Icon Amber Corwin was dead last.

Pairs - Two American pairs on the podium with Meno/Sand winning and Ina Dungjen third. My how times have changed. :P Shishkova/Naumov were second. Also a young team from China were FORTH.

Ice dance - French 1-2 with Moniotte/Lavanchy winning and Anissina/Peizerat second. OES Romanova/Yaroshenko were third with Drobiazko/Vanagas FORTH and Skary Babs fifth.

I can just remember many occasions where the scoring was a bit "WHACK" in Japan! The biggest and most egregious occurred in '2000' in the ladies competition; Maria Butyrskaya going against Irina S.! MB had a couple beautiful programs and performed quite well! In the LP she effortlessly completed 2 triple Lutz(s) for the 1st time I can remember! Even Peter Carruthers thought she had won! The judges GAVE it to Irina Slutskaya!

The SP I can watch again and again: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZ9H_qSb2c0 -

The LP was magical for her anyway and I've never seen her skate that well: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1eNyAj1iNo -

I'd feel more sorry for her if not for occasions she was gifted a title; the most horrendous earlier in the season at Trophy Lalique with her taking GOLD with multiple mistakes and stiffing our own Jennie Kirk! :judge::oksana1::sarah1::sasha1:

Thanks for the link, @Sylvia! This is awesome.

2003's ladies podium is tough to beat, with an always welcome Fumie-Freakin' combo!

One of my favorite skating interviews of all time occurred at 2001 NHK. Malinina unexpectedly wins, Peter Carruthers interviews her immediately afterward, and she is stunned to find out she not only qualifies for the GPF, but needs a second LP! Her reaction is totally adorable.

That event set itself apart from the rest demanding 2 LP's! I loved it if I liked the previous season's program which they utilized! For Plushenko in 2001, it was actually better the 2nd time around with a very nice costume change: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMlOauStH74 -

1987 NHK Ladies event with Katarina, Midori and Tonya. I believe the SP and LP placements were questionable.

Actually, didn't Tonya compete in Japan quiet a lot during the 1980's? Too bad she didn't consider working there more, as she seemed to be very popular.

Midori Ito 89-90. 7 flawless triples including the 3a.

Look like she was invited back for the gala this year, and skated to scheherazade again- see jonathan guerreiro's instagram story.

A great memory was Dice Murakami becoming the surprise winner in 2014! Here's his free skate:

There was also a funny moment after the men's ceremony in 2015, where the media later wanted pictures of just Yuzuru and Takahito together. So Boyang Jin crept over to the side of the rink, squatting awkwardly to stay out of the way. I can't find a video of that though.

I would love to see that. Is there video anywhere.

It was wonderful to watch those programs again.

I loved loved loved Bute.

I remember when she beat Kwan in 1999 to take the world title, and the commentator (don't recall whether Canadian or American) said:"Maria wasn't the best skater of the night, but she was the most determined".
:(:mad::EVILLE::EVILLE:

I get it that watching Michelle skate was a spiritual experience for some fans, and certainly don't deny her talent nor her accomplishments. Nor her longevity.

But, she wasn't the only talented skater in the field nor necessarily always the best, as the North American commentators would have you believe.

I know exactly what you speak of @Japanfan. I was there in person and I can assure you that Maria was the best skater of the night! It was very emotional, and the crowd was totally behind her.

(No, @Jeschke and @alchemy void , Malinina was not the best skater of the night, bless her! ) (#teamjewelthief all the way :D )
