Mass Shooting at LGBT Nightclub in Orlando

Just wanted to put my two cents in about gun issues. My father was a hunter and is a target shooter, so I've been around guns all my life. I have also worked in both the state and federal courts for almost twenty years, so I see a lot of gun cases.

While you certainly can kill/harm people with things other than guns, it is much harder to do so, and the vast majority of murder cases I see involve guns. I'd say the murder/assault cases run about fifty-fifty between legal guns and illegal guns. For me, the problem with easy access to legal guns is that people buy them, keep them loaded in houses/cars/on their persons, and then unfortunately, the guns are right there when they lose their tempers. I have far too many murder cases that have arisen out of stupidity, people killing each other over parking spaces, noise complaints, not moving a bike out of the way of a car, etc. That one moment of temper combined with an easy way to kill ruins the lives of both families.

My caseload does not include the large number of cases where children get their hands on loaded guns that their parents haven't secured and hurt either themselves or someone else. Prosecutors are very reluctant to charge parents in those cases because they see it as compounding a tragedy.

As I said, my father had his friends hunted for years. All were responsible hunters, really understood guns, wore blaze orange everything, only shot if they knew they could kill the deer and no one else was around. They also never hunted on state game lands, only on private lands owned by friends. There was a reason for this, they were terrified of weekend hunters, usually from the cities, who had minimal experience with guns and basically got together with buddies during hunting season, drank like crazy, then went out and shot at anything that moved. I lived in a big hunting area and there are always stories about this.

One thing I had not realized about the NRA is that they have means to essentially force people to join them. Over the years, they have entered into partnerships with many gun clubs/ranges and now if you want to join one, you must also join the NRA. My father's gun range is one those places, he has been able to trick his way around the requirement for years but now probably won't be able to do this. Since he absolutely refuses to join the NRA, he may have to give up his membership. It makes me wonder how many people have joined the NRA because it's the only way to get access to a local gun range/

I personally see no reason that any civilian needs an assault weapon, body armor, or any other military/police gear. I'm not a fan of the Second Amendment, but think it is here to stay. However, I see nothing in the language of the Second Amendment that says you cannot restrict ownership by type of weapons, control the amount of ammo people own, or restrict who can sell guns. I'd love to see guns treated the way my commonwealth, Pennsylvania, treats liquor, only sold in state-controlled stores, no more private sales, gun stores, Walmart, gun shows, etc. I see no reason that it should be easier to buy a gun than to get Sudafed.

The most intelligent post I have ever read on an Internet forum. Bravo

Saw this on Facebook after giving my drivers license in order to buy Sudafed
It is truly a crazy world. a young girl can arrange with her school to help her get an abortion or birth control without parental consent..but can't bring a middle to school without a note from home.

And I can't get a Tramadol prescription for the pain I have in my leg without seeing my doctor first. He has to approve, write out the prescription because he can't phone or fax it to my pharmacy anymore. And the doctor makes the final decision whether he wants me to have it or not. In my case, he decided no but said I could use Aleve if I had pain. I can't take Ibuprofen, Motrin or Advil because of being highly allergic to it. He decided no because of how long I had taken it. He knew I wasn't addicted to it and he didn't want me to become addicted, either.

Gee. I guess I could go to the pawn shop here in town and see how fast it would take me to get an AR-15. I could probably get that easier than I can get a prescription of Tramadol for pain and walk out within 5 minutes.

I'll do you all one better...

I can't get a prescription for allergy eye drops. My optometrist's office will only fax it to the pharmacy now and pharmacies don't use faxes anymore. They will give me an actual paper prescription only at my annual appointment. Which is not until late August. My retinal specialist won't give me the prescription until my annual appointment which is not until February (and I forgot to ask last February as that is just not allergy season). My doctor's office won't give me a prescription because I have not been seen in the office for allergies for over three years. Which is true. Because allergy medication other than these eye drops is all OTC now so there is no reason to go in.

I have to make an appointment with the retinal specialist or my doctor and pay a co-pay and spend an hour or so there in order to get a prescription for allergy eye drops.

But I could go to a store and buy a gun this afternoon.

If only a constitutional amendment guaranteed us the right to medication.

This is worth sending to several networks. See who jumps on it first.

Yesterday CNN showed a story created by one if their people. She was able to go to a gun store and buy an AR 15 in 7 minutes! They did ask her a few questions and then sold it to her for roughly $800.

It's easier to buy for our civilians to buy even military grade weapons than to buy necessary things in life. One can buy a gun without demonstrating the ability to use it but you can't even test drive a car without showing your drivers license.

Excuse me? So just tops and bottoms?

Do you EVER proofread what you post? Occasional errors are understandable for any of us, but often I am completely lost when trying to understand what you are trying to communicate.

And I have to go in July to the DMV because my handicap placard expires. I'm permanently disabled but you still have get that renewed every 4 years. When I first got it, the DMV required me to go to my doctor so he could fill out forms stating I was permanently disabled in order to get it.

While I'm there, I'll go ahead and get my drivers license renewed, too. I might as well get it renewed since it will expire on my birthday in September. I just hope I don't have to get my doctor to sign more forms stating I'm still disabled and that I can drive. The last time the lady from the DMV asked me how did I get to the DMV when I told her that I needed the placard.

Before I could answer her, she asked me what was the walker for. I looked at her and said that I couldn't walk without it and that's what it was for. Then she asked me did that mean I was handicapped. I stood up, turned around, pulled my sweatpants up as high as possible so she could see what my left leg looked like. I then said "Does that answer your question?" I then told the lady that I drove my Rio Red Mustang, and that's how I got there. She then asked me how in the world was I able to drive with my leg looking like that. I told her "Lady, that's my left leg and I don't use it to push on the gas pedal and brake. I use my right leg just like everyone else does in the USA."

Hello! Earth to DMV Lady!! :inavoid:  o_O

There are several otc allergy eye drops close to the prescription configuration - zaditor otc is what my eye doctor recommended several years ago. Works great for me.

Been there, done that. Does nothing. And Pataday actually irritates my eyes even more than allergies.

Yes I do proof read...as I am typing. What I need to do is read again before I send. auto correct is out to get me. My apologies.

I meant to say that my child can't bring a Midol to school without a note but can get help with an abortion or birth control through the school without parental consent.

And as to prescription mess it is so ridiculous in CA. I have been taking two medications for 20 years. now the Dr can only fill 30 at a time with no refills. The pharmaceutical won't call it in if you call them early. So if you run out on Saturday you are screwed.

Yet though I am not sure but I think I can walk into my local Big 5 and get a gun. the power of identity politics.

Whoever said that one of the problems with gun ownership is that with a loaded gun around it is too easy to run and get it when you are angry.

Just got an email from my friend who volunteered at a Pacific Northwest Pride event this weekend. I was worried about that, given the proximity of hatemonger "Pastor" Roger Jimenez, but Anita said the event was hugely successful and nobody tried to protest or interfere in any way. People came to be supportive and have a good time. As it should be.

I don't have the stomach for that. I'm glad you do. The NRA won big today:

Yep, and just so Americans on this thread don't think we Europeans are completely misinformed and out of touch - it's being reported on the BBC too :p http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-36563337

Unbelievable and terrifying.

So what are all these amazing changes that we were told (on this very thread) that the US have made/are making to tighten gun control when a person on a terrorist watch list cannot be stopped from buying a gun? Genuinely curious.

Nice to see you feel that you can practically gloat about this. Anyway as discussed in this thread, a lot of the fight has been happening on local and state levels where stricter gun control has been happening. On the national level, I expect this issue to be revisited once there's some change in personnel in the Senate after the November elections.

Nobody on this thread said "amazing" or anything similar, as you know, so I hardly think your response here is genuine.Which of course surprises no one.

That said, here is an example of the incremental change that is occurring in the US:

There's a list circulating on FB of all the Senators who voted against the bill.

I hope they all lose their seats in November.

Senate terms are for six years and only 1/3 of the Senate is up for election each federal election year. So they cannot all lose their seats in November.

But but but... you don't see the absurdity of allowing people on terrorist watch lists to buy weapons? I simply cannot see any reasonable person (who is not personally paid millions by the gun lobby) being in favour of people on terrorist watch lists buying guns. I cannot get my head around it

There were four bills up for vote--two sponsored by GOP, and two by Dems. The GOP bills received a majority vote, but virtually no Dems supported the measures to pass the 60 vote threshold.

So if you're looking for names, you'd have to include all Dem senators.

I'm fine with as many losing their seats as possible in both parties if they can't come together to work for change in the wake of the USA's biggest mass shooting ever.

Exactly. Voting along party lines to stop ANY changes from happening is just shameful and completely irresponsible
