Maria SOTSKOVA - poetry on ice

Suffice to say, The Skating Lesson is not a fan in the least given what they tweeted this weekend (re: Russian Nationals).
Then again, they weren't particularly complimentary of Maria when they covered Junior Worlds the past 2 seasons either.

I might be in minority on this forum, but I enjoy Maria's programs this season, and I think she has improved over the past few months, after re-watching her GPF performance vids as well as junior worlds vids earlier this year. She now skates with more speed, edges and transitions in between elements, compared to a younger herself. :)

I really like her moves, graceful and elegant, might be 'boring' to some people but imo not that often seen in nowadays skating world. The classical programs suit her well.

The jumping technique she's got is great, her jumps are with good height, accurate edges, and light landings. Not easy for such a tall girl, and I hope she fix the ur issues soon.

Long interview, here are some snippets:

- And why at the end of the season you have decided to change coaches and leave Panova for Elena Buyanova?
- This decision was not spontaneous. Away from a coach who raised you, generally very hard: Svetlana has always been like a second mother to me, and this is no exaggeration. But the idea that it was time to change something, getting stronger and stronger. And this thought came into my own head, not my mother or anyone else. In 16 years, I think, people are able to make such decisions on their own.

I especially was not satisfied with the conditions which I had to train. Little ice, lack of any other things necessary for training. When I finally talked about all this with Svetlana Vladimirovna, she said, that gives me time to think things through again. But by the time I already reflect on everything very well.

- Already knew you were leaving for Buyanova?
- At first, I made the former coach aware of the decision. And only then called Elena Germanovna.

- And if Buyanova did not take you?
- This is the option I did not have any plan of action. It was, rather, an understanding that Elena Germanovna - my only chance to stay in the sport. I did not have thoughts to ask someone else.

- Why?
- Probably because I wanted this coach. Somehow there was a confidence that we will find a common language.

- Explain then, if you were able to twist four turns, from now on you are underrotating triple jumps? Or is it a consequence of changes to the body?
- In training, I have no problems with underrotated jumps. Underrotation usually occur on one and the reason: you're trying harder than usual to control the jump, start more gently on it, less powerful build, and jump immediately loses height. I have in all cases, when there were an underrotation, affected exactly this-over-zealousness error. So much so that the current season in many ways new: were the first adult stages of "Grand Prix", the first adult problem. I do not think the underrotations are a real problem. More likely a temporary phenomenon.

- Asked about the cherished desire of the end of last year, you said that you want to reach the final "Grand Prix" and the rest will not say. Now you can discover the secret: what else was on the list?
- I naturally wanted to qualify for the European Championship and Worlds, and I am very happy I coped with this task. The next goal - to skate clean in Ostrava and in Helsinki. For me it is more important than the place. Let the judges count points.

- The fact that you are constantly compared with Adelina Sotnikova, annoyed or flattered?
- I do, frankly, incomprehensible conversation that the transition to Elena Germanovna I became similar to Adeline. The gliding may have certain similarities: in the end we have the same specialist - Maxim Zavozin. Adeline skating very fast and wide: to be able to, I can see only advantages. As for the programs and skating style, they are different.

Well, everyone has a bad day in the office. I hope she's not taking this skate too hard

New Interview
Maria Sotskova: I was too eager to show results at the European Championships.

Snippets, and YES, she hears all the negative comments that is being said about her costumes and her skating style and who knows what else :( :shuffle: Google translation :drama::biggrinbo

-Your mom is part of your team, she makes you very beautiful costumes. It has become a tradition since childhood?

-Yes, my mother has always actively participated in the process. My dresses she comes up with, always in control of how I prichesana or wearing makeup. But now, when I switched to CSKA, she almost stopped taking part in the training process, because before she could still be in training and she even tried to teach something, although I always told her: "mom, you're not a coach!" and she now began to work more, and CSKA is not accepted to mom each day sitting in training. And yes I am growing, and is not convinced that I need mom's presence in training. So she went a bit, concerned only with my costume. But of course, she always supports me. In Ostrava she was not there, it can no longer watch, said that watching from the arena too hard. She and my performances on tv doesn't look, goes away. Is returned only when the results are announced. When you arrive at the event, write, of course, mom, as has and is. However, during the start of the maximum move away from everything. On the day of the competition Mom and I do not talk, we understand each other and what we are comfortable with.

The next season she will make you costumes?

-Probably, yes, it is my longtime designer. My dresses are really paying attention, although earlier this season had some problems. I would say that all of this prejudice, and I find all this very much it was not pleasant. When I came out in my costumes at my first competition in Bratislava, crumbled pile of negatives: "when Sotskova was with Svetlana Panova, her costumes, of course, have been better!" but with the change of coach, my mom is not changed, it still sews me the same costumes as before. Maybe people think that Svetlana Panova and I sewed these dresses? They are the same as my mother's idea and people apparently just convenient to think so. I like my dress, my taste. Of course, it is important to listen to the people about the costumes, programs, but when the sofa experts who have no relation to the sport, do not know how hard it is, how hard my mom to come up with these dresses, sitting at home on the couch and begin to comment on that, themselves, nothing in life ...

At the beginning of the season there was a lot of negativity
-You've read about it on the Internet?

-Yes, at the beginning of the season I was interested to hear what people think. More so, I changed the coach, I have a new style programs, new dresses, after all. It is really important to me to learn how people react. It's the audience, for whom we all also do. And when all fell down, it was very uncomfortable, and I just did not understand what it is. Everyone started writing that I look like Adelina Sotnikova or Anna Pogorilaya, that I had lost my style! But this is not true, because everyone has their own style, and I can never be similar to Adelina or Anya because I am Masha! And all this is tied to the fact that I changed the coach. But my decisions with anyone I am not going to discuss. I decided that I will not read it, because it is unpleasant to me - why spoil your nerves? Answer I will never be, because the conflict with the people and to acquire the reputation of a scandalous girl I do not want. People write it on their conscience, they are entitled to their opinion. But I will not read the opinion.

Long interview, good read :cheer:

Dave Lease is an idiot. Just ignore him

Not the Euros FS she wanted, but still finishing in 4th behind 3 world medalists is no small feat. I like her skating and I think her dresses are fine. If she just works on power, speed and fixing those UR's, and good music/choreography, I think she'll be in the mix among the top skaters through the next Olympic cycle.

I admit, I'm a sucker for a tall, elegant ladies skater. While a different time and system, Maria should watch some videos of Lisa Marie Allen, particularly how she controls her height/posture, and projects to the audience.

I think the Russian babies are also practicing ballet as well. So why the critic about them not being balletic

Because they are not. They are very busy rushing around and throwing themselves into rotation whatever ballet they are studying is lost.
Give Mai Mihara's 2014 GISELLE a look

They do have ballet lessons, the point is those lessons don't help much.

They used to....perhaps (I have no idea) now their classes are at the rink and concentrate more on flexiblity for spins and jumps for jumps as opposed to beauty of movement and muscle control. Just a thought. Years ago i was watching a Russian competition- maybe a junior one on a cable station in the middle of the night and I was so impressed..Even 6th & 7th place with horrible choreo.& music every movement was picture perfect & you could snap a picture at any point & it would be beautiful. After watching cdn ladies with arms flapping all over I felt we would never get anywhere unless training completely changed.

Many of them only have 45-90 minutes on ice every day due to the crowded rinks. I guess some clubs do have better ice time but from the interviews I remember most of them don't.

I continue to see growth and improvement each time Maria takes the ice. I hope that she keeps everything in perspective and stays focused this Olympic season. Maria has some experience under her belt now which is quite helpful. However, in attempting to reach her Olympic team goal, she will be fighting an uphill battle for a spot, but I think she could surprise. Regardless, I will be cheering her on all the way!

Maria Sotskova
SP: Waltz from "Swan Lake", choreographed by Peter Tchernyshev
LP: Moonlight by Claude Debussy

http://rsport.ru/interview/20170804/1123766551.html
- How did you come to this music?

- Peter (Chernyshev - program director Sotskova and choreographer) offered this waltz. For me and Ira Tagayeva (the choreographer of the group Bujanova), it became very unexpected, because the waltz of "Swan Lake" is very grandiose and flying music. We doubted that she would fit Masha. But Peter said: "Masha is a bright and airy person, and this image is hers." When we saw that everything was working out, and Masha accepted the waltz, the process went even faster.
Countess Sotskova grows up
- And Masha?

- Of course! Masha still has that age when she will plow and must do it. She is a hard worker, a hard worker ... A laborer with a big rod. I like her that she does not just execute the program as an installation of a coach and choreographers, but decorates it herself. And she knows how to do it. Masha has changed a lot compared to last season. She grew up and became even more sociable with the audience. Of course, and the program - "Moonlight" Claude Debussy - to this obliges. Before, Sotskova was such a Snow Queen, which also had her charm. I really liked her county in her, with this minimum of emotionality. She really grew up on ice like the Ice Queen, and it was just her inherent charm. But the "countess" is growing up and now this sedatecy is gradually remaining inside her and less and less spilling out. And I really like it,
- But you yourself wanted such an evolution of Sotskova?

- Naturally, because in modern figure skating you have to be multifaceted, you can not focus on one image, although it is beautiful. And in an arbitrary program Mary appears such a girl ... unearthly. In my perception. We will try to improve ourselves in this important sporting year.

Apparently Maria has mastered the tano on all jumps and most of her jumps in the 2nd half which I'm assuming she means the LP. Maria did put out an interview in March saying all the jumps in the SP should be in the 2nd half.

Figure Sotskova looks very convincing in technical terms - Tarasova.

The skating of Russian figure skater Maria Sotskova before the new season looks convincingly from a technical point of view, the Honored Coach of Russia Tatyana Tarasova told R-Sport agency.

"I liked (in training) Masha Sotskova, who learned a lot, she mastered all the jumps with her hands, jumping elements in her are mostly in the second part of the program, technically she looks very convincing," Tarasova said by phone.

Maria Sotskova: "I do my favorite thing and I enjoy it" google translated

Reutov skater Maria Sotskova after a successful first season in adult skating is intensively preparing for the upcoming Olympic season. The athlete told our reporter about hours of training, the differences between youth sports from the adult and upcoming plans.

Maria, tell us about the preparations for the Olympic season.

- Preparation is going on actively. Literally a month ago I returned from Italy from the fees. We lived in the highlands, so it was hard to breathe - the load increased. Work is in full swing. This is due to the fact that soon the program will start showing.

How did you spend your time at the training camp?

- The whole days of training, there were so many of them that in the evening I went back to my room and immediately went to bed. We go to the small town of Courmayeur in the mountains for the second year, so I already know everything there. On weekends I went for walks and tried to discover something new for myself. It's nice to walk and have a good day off.

How often do you train now?

- I work every day, I have a day off only on Sunday. I arrive at the rink at ten in the morning and return home at eight in the evening. I have an hour and a half break, but mostly the whole day is loaded.

What are your plans for the future?

- A month later in Sochi will pass control rentals, where we will show our Olympic programs. The Federation of figure skating will evaluate them, look at the content elements, the rotation and the program itself. After this, there will be international rating competitions, and then the Grand Prix stages will begin.

Masha, you are now performing at an adult level. Are there any differences?

- At first I thought that there was no difference, but after my first season I felt it - at the adult level everything is serious. Maybe because I grew up and began to perceive it differently. Of course, junior sport is different from an adult. There comes a realization of what you are doing and why you are doing it.

The level of responsibility became higher?

- Of course, the very fact that you are at an adult level and ahead of the Olympic season. The most important thing is not to load yourself with this head, but simply work and do your favorite thing.

How do you cope with the experiences?

- I already knew that I love figure skating. I like to ride and compete in competitions. Thoughts about the fact that I have to show the maximum that the judges, the spectators, are looking at me, this all needs to be discarded. Go out to the skating rink, do your thing and get pleasure from it. Excitement in any case will be, but already less and pleasant.

Did you manage to relax a little with such a busy training schedule?

- Usually I only have a week of respite, but this year the coach has specially given the opportunity to rest more, because there is a responsible, serious season - you need to approach him in full readiness. I had two weeks, I went with my mother and girlfriend to Turkey. We had a great time, had a rest in body and soul. Remained very pleasant, warm memories. I charged positive for the season and now - again in the fight.

Sometimes Google translation really works. Love the term "sofa expert"! It's almost better than "armchair analyst" IMO.

Maria might not be my personal fave, but I like her attitude. Respect!

Wonderful interview!

Maria is a sensible, dedicated, goal-oriented, success-driven athlete. What a great work ethic she has gauging by the training schedule she keeps. Maria's positive outlook and exceptional attitude will serve her well. She appears confident, relaxed and prepared heading into the all-important Olympic season. What a great role model!
Brava! Masha! Brava! :encore:

As always, @DobrinFan. . .Thank you! :)

Snippets pertaining to Maria from Buyanova's interview Vaytsekhovskaya's interview with Buyanova `Sotnikova and I had to stop deceiving ourselves' ~Translated by TAHkBA

About accepting Rad as a student:
EV: You had no doubt that Maria Sotskova, who had been working with you for a year by then might react as well? That, so to say, she might take it badly and go look for a more comfortable team?
EB: I doubt we currently have athletes who can set the rules for the coaches. At least I don't really understand such a position. Obviously Sotskova was in a kind of a discomfort, especially as after the Europeans there were talks about her being switched with Radionova. It was voiced out all the time. But I think if anything it made Maria stronger and I see nothing wrong with that. After all Javier Fernandez and Yudzuru Hanyu train together, does it make them any less good? Take Etheri Tutberidze: she has Zagitova who practically grew up under Medvedeva, who, in her turn, was skating under Lipnitskaya.
You asked about Sotskova - it's not a fact she is uncomfortable with Radionova. Elena not only stepped into a complicated situation, but into the hardest possible, knowing no one will give full attention to her only. If I have to compare those 2 athletes, it's harder for Lena, because she more or less missed the year, she has to catch up and that's a lot of work. When the athlete is still a kid and only starts winning it's just work, work, work. I.e. the first toeloop, the first axel, the first lurtz, then the combos - things that are common for everyone. Yet here we are in a stage when we can decorate the programmes. Like the christmas tree.

EV: Speaking of the Olympics: you can't not see no matter how hard will Sotskova and Radionova work the current competition in the ladies is such that they both might not make it to the team.
EB: It's something every coach should be ready for. I just want my athletes not to miss the opportunities they have. This is what we work for - not missing them. A year ago many were doubting Sotskova would make it to the GPF - I saw the doubt in the eyes. But Maria said herself when we were submitting the plans `I'll make it!'. When she started working I was in awe of her determination. And immediately believed that girl will make it. Then there was the Russian nationals towards which Maria was working like crazy.

EV: And then she just didn't have any more power left?
EB: I'd say she slightly `exhaled' when she made it to the team. But there were objective moments. During the winter Maria was seriously ill for 2 weeks and, of course, the thought she might be replaced was pressing on her. While her basic technique is really good she has to work much harder than the other skaters because she is tall.
