Mai has a chronic medical condition. I have forgotten what it is. They had been changing up her medz....one of which gave her a red face. This does not sound good.
I so love ? her skating.

I looked it up. Mai has Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.
Juvenile arthritis is a disease in which there is inflammation (swelling) of the synovium in children aged 16 or younger. The synovium is the tissue that lines the inside of joints.

Juvenile arthritis is an autoimmune disease. That means the immune system, which normally protects the body from foreign substances, attacks the body instead. The disease is also idiopathic, which means that no exact cause is known. Researchers believe juvenile arthritis may be related to genetics, certain infections, and environmental triggers.

Coach Nakano told that Mai re-started training a few days ago. Their plan is to skip the international competition (*Lombardia) and they wish to be ready for Kinki Regionals in the beginning of October. She hasn't done difficult jumps yet but Coach Nakano said "Her (lost) weight recovered significantly. After re-starting training her face became brighter than before."

That poor girl has been through so much. I hope and pray it all gets better from here.

Long story short, Nationals medalists are the only skaters who are given bye to Regionals as 'seeded skaters'. Other skaters must skate in Regionals or JO (which is usually held on the same weekend as Regionals) or CS/B comp within a couple of weeks before/after Regionals. Skaters who are invited to a GP event which is scheduled within a couple of weeks before/after Sectionals can be given bye (basically bye to only Sectionals).

Replying to my own post. I found it's a bit unusual that the article mentioned about a medical certificate.

I knew there were examples in the past that some skaters withdrew from Regionals due to injuries but they were allowed to participate in Sectional as exceptional cases by submitting a medical certificate.

Mai has better results than the latest example (in men's field), so I wonder if Mai can be treated like the male skater if she and her team really want to skate in Western Sectional. However, I'm not sure about her physical condition at this point. I'd rather support skipping this whole season if she is not healthy enough to prepare for competitions. That said, please please please, Mai, get back in competitions at some point in the future!

Nicole Watt—her career was shortened by the condition.
 
Miu Suzaki posted photos with Mai and a comment on her IG. Mai still looks so slim but it's nice to see she recovered enough to have some fun time going out with her friend. ✨ ?

During an interview with Kaori she said she met Mai twice and was given some supportive words from Mai wishing good luck to Kaori at Nats.

They say she is improving, but she certainly looks way too thin... and her hair isn't the usual shiny hair she's always had... but if her body isn't absorbing the nutrients, well, that explains it.

Yes, my wishes are for her to be healthy again, just healthy and happy.

Here we can see Mai skating (a glimpse of SP run-through) at the national camp. I desperately want to see Mai's new FS (done by Lori Nichol) in any competition. ? Mai's skating is awesome, flow and edge works, so I think Lori's program will fit her very well. (Wish it's not Lori's self-recycling one!!?) Above all Mai looked so happy when she announced that she worked with Lori during last off-season. I can wait until she gets prepared! ??✨

ETA:
Mai was the only skater who wore a mask on the ice in the camp. So she's definitely more careful not to catch the c0rona v*rus than other skaters. Stay safe through this pandem*c, Mai!

Japanese Nats starts from tomorrow. Here is a video of an interview with Mai & Coach Nakano.
(my rough translation)
Mai: (about Nats) I want to show everyone that I'm doing well.
Mai: (about sitting out of whole last season) I was not sure whether I could be back in figure skating. It made me struggle a lot. Then I had a strong feeling in me that I should do everything that I could do.
Coach Nakano: There was a tough period when things made her feel down. But she had never whined. If she was not a strong person, she could never make a come back. Nothing but her toughness made it possible to be prepared enough for competing in this season.
Mai: (about Kinki Regional) First of all to be back on the ice was a delight to me. I was so happy to make my program completed.
Coach Nakano in the K'C: Good, good, good! This is a new start line.
Mai: (about Nats) I've got over lots of things. By doing so I'm here where I am now.
(about what she learned from the tough lessons) Maybe it's that I don't lose my hope. With all the difficulties I want to keep trying to somehow somehow manage to get stronger.

Mai Mihara, who’s currently in her fourth year of university, announced her post-graduation plans on the Sysmex skating account:
She’s been accepted to Konan University’s graduate school!
She plans to continue balancing skating and her studies.

Mai placed 4th in both of her Grand Prix competitions this fall, setting new ISU PB scores of 144.49 (FS) and 214.95 (total - #14 on ISU SB right now) at the Gran Premio D'Italia GP in early November. On to Nationals - SP (12/23/21 & FS (12/25).
