Madison Chock ankle surgery?

Last edited:
According to People, Madison had an osteochondral lesion in her ankle. From what little I know, this involves injury to the top bone of the foot, the talus, and the cartilage in the ankle joint.

Apparently, it's a common problem, affecting a wide range of individuals. Lots of things can cause it, but judging by what Madison has said, her condition seems to have stemmed from a single trauma suffered during training. She had a piece of bone broken off from the talus which was being held in place by cartilage. I don't recall her giving details about the extent of the injury, but it's likely the surgery was to repair a break to the talus and/or remove loose bone chips.

Since the Olympics, links to articles about Madi's injury have been posted in the Chock/Bates fan fests on this forum and on Golden Skate. I'll post the link to the People article here, as it's the only one I'm aware of where Madison specifically names her diagnosis.

She was incredibly strong and brave to skate through the season with this painful, nagging injury.

Madison spoke to reporters in the mixed zone after their Short Dance at the Olympics and that's when she first mentioned her injury. Excerpt from the end of IceNetwork's SD article:
In the mixed zone, Chock revealed that she has been suffering from a painful foot injury all season, aggravated during the warm-up in a mishap on a lift.
"I have an osteochondral lesion in my foot which means there is a loose bone fragment in my joint that is being held in by the cartilage, and when that happened it jostled it more, and it doesn't feel good," Chock said. "I will have extra ice and PT today."
"We did exactly the same movement right before Champs Camp (last August) and Madi suffered the injury, and at the time we weren't sure we were going to do the Grand Prix events," Bates said. "She's taped it up every day, she's gotten the cortisone shots. And then we did it with literally five seconds left in the warm-up… I knew she was going to skate well. It's a testament to her character."
Best wishes to Madison on her recovery! :)

From the end of Sarah Brannen's "Inside Edge" blog on IN (April 11, 2018):
Madison Chock, who finished fifth at the 2018 World Championships with partner Evan Bates, underwent surgery on her right ankle April 6 at the Colorado Center of Orthopedic Excellence. Dr. John Shank performed the procedure to remove loose bone fragments that had chipped off the ankle last August.

It's incredible how well Madi is getting around on that scooter. She and Evan were in Orlando last weekend to give the keynote speech at the AAC dinner. Madi's ankle didn't stop her from visiting Disneyworld. She even rode the Everest rollercoaster per her instagram story.

Here's Madi looking happy and fit outside the World of Avatar. https://www.instagram.com/p/BikW2bkFqsk/?taken-by=chockolate02
