Love, Balls and Courting: Tennis V

And Kerber didn't fear Williams today and to be honest this was the best player Serena faced all torney...

While Kerber may be the 'best opponent Serena faced all tourney,' none of the others are piece-of-cake nobodies. As they are professionals on the tour, none are exactly that easy to play against either. :drama: Serena could have lost against any one of her previous opponents in the draw. I can just imagine what some of the putdowns would have been had that happened. Nobody gets to play at Wimbledon unless they know how to play tennis. I have huge respect for Serena's semi-final opponent, Julia Goerges who had this to say: "Serena knew how to win that match by experience. She steps up her game. It's a big word which is respect toward me that she brings her A game... I played great and I'm closer... I don't look at this match negatively. Serena is the one who you want to play and who you want to get the experience from... She was there from every single point, and she showed me how to play [the big points] at that stage of [crucial moments in a match]."

And frankly, I doubt Angelique Kerber has ever 'feared' Serena Williams. If you want to be a champion, you can't 'fear' anyone. Like Goerges, Kerber surely respects Serena and has learned from playing against her.

During his press conference today when he was asked about Serena having lost her match against Kerber, Novak had this to say: "Serena lost? Obviously an amazing result for Kerber, but it's not a huge surprise because Kerber is a top player and she's won a couple of Grand Slams already and beat Serena in the Australian Open. So it's quite amazing that Kerber managed to pull out the win against Serena. But Serena, after giving birth to her child and not playing for so long, and she got to the Wimbledon finals, I think she'll take it... You have to take into consideration what she's been through. She keeps on inspiring all of us. It's quite incredible what she's doing, to be honest."

No way should the Anderson Isner match have been suspended to allow Nadal Djokovic to play their match out.

Right, of course. It was a silly question from me after watching both matches for so many hours yesterday. :watch: :nopryde: The only other possibility as Rafa mentioned (when asked) is for his match with Novak to have been scheduled ahead of Isner vs. Anderson. Or play could have been scheduled to start a bit earlier in the day. But as Rafa said, 'There's no way to predict what's going to happen in matches. That's the sport.'

A possible change to at least playing a tiebreaker in the final set if the games reach 12-all makes a lot of sense particularly because 12-all is very rare. In any case, the players aren't complaining about anything. Reporters are always trying to stir something up. One of them nagged Serena about whether having to wait till Novak vs Rafa match played out today affected her? I mean why would it? That was Serena's response as well. She was not affected at all. As Serena said, she played all of her other matches during the fortnight at no set time, whenever previous matches ended.

Anderson just hasn't got the energy to take Djokovic on unfortunately having had 2 tiring 5 setters in the quarters and then the semi. And yes the final could be over before the WC starts - which is sad!!

Anderson played much better that third set, but Djokovic played a superb tie-breaker. Congrats on the amazing comeback and his 13th Grand Slam title to Novak.

ETA: Novak getting emotional about his young son saying "Daddy! Daddy!" while getting the trophy got me emotional too. :wuzrobbed

Kerber played so powerful, accurate, and moved so well. Nobody can beat her when she plays like that. I am so happy she is finally back in the slam winners circle. She was robbed at the Australian Open when she had match point vs Halep in the semis and probably would have beaten Wozniacki in the final.

I'm so happy for Novak. After all his physical and mental struggles it must be so wonderful to stand in the winner's circle again. After his match in Rome with Rafa, even while he wasn't at his best, that's when I realized he was making his way back. Congrats to him and Anderson, who played a great third set.

The funny thing is even though he was was dead tired Anderson played a better match here than his horrendous final of the U.S Open vs Rafa when he was fresh. I guess experience helps and hopefuly someday he has a 3rd slam final when he is fresh this time, and can play an even better match, whether he wins or not. I would love to see him win a slam before he retires, I like seeing all these different guys win slams while Berdych never got one. I hate Berdych and like feeling the burn everytime a Cilic or someone new Berdych probably considered inferior to him wins one.

Rafa must be devastated. He missed a huge shot to get a closer target on Fed's slam record but he still has a good shot of it. Even though he was playing Novak at his very best in the semis, he still had some huge chances in that match missed, unusual lack of mental strength from Rafa.

Do you think Federer will never win a Grand Slam again like you did a few years ago? :saint:

I dont know what you are talking about, as I am a new poster here. However a few years ago I think most people would have said all of the following things:

-Pennetta definitely isnt going to ever win a slam.
-Wozniacki will for sure never get a slam, that ship has long sailed.
-Kerber will never win a slam
-Nadal will never win another slam
-Federer will never win another slam
-Venus will never make another slam final

Probably roughly in that order of likelihood. All which not only proved false but conclusively by a large margin false, apart from I guess the Wozniacki one as she only got 1 slam and barely in the final, thus far. This is the most unpredictable era of tennis ever, both on the womens and mens side, so it is best to not make any firm long term guarantees or predictions for the moment. Even something seemingly unbelievable like Berdych or Tsonga finally winning a slam now, or Goffin getting a slam title, before retiring, shouldnt shock anyone if it happens.

So glad to see Halep go out 1st round. What an annoying spoiled brat. Hope Kerber wins the womens title. I am happy with any of Nadal, Federer, Wawrinka winning the mens. I used to be a Djokovic fan, until he cheated on his wife, now I want him to win nothing ever again.

Well it must really break your heart that Nole's not only been winning, he's rounded out his resume recently with a 4th Wimbledon crown and completed his Golden Masters by taking Cincy owning all 9 Masters 1000 events! Fedal's not even close and at their age it's a Djokovic record that won't be broken anytime soon! What do you think of the Nole-Slam he finished off by winning the French Open 2 years ago? It went downhill from there until he snuck thru the draw last month and captured his 13th Major! It's not like I'm a fan; all common knowledge OTTH!

I don't pay enough attention to women's tennis to know if Halep's a brat, but she's definitely weak! Gets to #1 by chance and is still vulnerable in the 1st Round of tourneys due to that mental weakness! Watching Murray about to be knocked out in the 2nd Rd by Verdasco that's schooling him at the moment!:COP::judge::yikes:

Djokovic is an incredible tennis player. I dont take away from anything he achieves. And his Golden Masters is an amazing and historic achievement and worthy of huge praise. If he stays on track and doesnt go into another slump by cheating on his wife again, he could even target 20+ slams, the weeks at #1 record, and other historic marks.

I just dont respect anyone who cheats on their wife on a personal level. I know it wont have any impact on what he does or doesnt achieve, but I wont ever be cheering for him again due to that. Especialy being that I myself am an extremely kind, humble, sweet, loyal, truthful, and considerate person, and could never see myself cheating on a life partner, it is hard to respect someone who would.

Catsuit banned at French Open; Serena wears tutu-inspired tennis outfit at the U.S. Open

No one can keep Serena down, no matter how hard some people try!

I love this Nike tweet:
"You can take the superhero out of her costume, but you can never take away her superpowers" :kickass:

Nadal & Khachanov in a 4th set tiebreak with Rafa up 2 sets to 1...

ETA: Rafa won 5-7 7-5 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3)!

I watched N&K - what an incredible match.

Watching V&S right now. It might be one of the last times they compete against each other. I keep thinking one of these days one of them is going to say - enough.

Bertens, who has had a great summer, knocked out in the 3rd round.

I was out last night and missed the Venus/Serena match-up, but looking at the score, maybe I didn't miss much? :shuffle:

As for Khachanov, I would console him in that loss to Nadal. :grope:

Serena's serve really carried her through today. I think she will have to up her game even more though against Pliskova on Tuesday. :yikes: at her tennis dresses for this Open though. The black/brown tutu is better than the powder blue one, but they are both atrocious.

:cheer2: for Thiem. That was a brilliant win over Kevin Anderson. It amazes me he can return so well so when he stands soooooo far back behind the baseline.

John Millman, age 29 of Aus and World ranked 55, defeated Roger Federer, age 35, in a stunner in the humidity that was in NYC Sunday night at the US Open round of 16, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, 7-6. Both men were humble good sports at the end. Millman will face Djokovic on Wednesday in quarters.

Federer is actually 37. I think his back was bothering him given the way he was, and wasn't moving.

His back had been plaing up since before the tournament apparently. But Federer refused to use that as an excuse. Millman played a blinder and deserved his win.

I do wonder if this is the beginning of the end for Roger. It will be a sad day when he does finally does retire.
