This site features a video that seems to have been taken by an airport worker. It shows one engine on fire during take-off while the plane was still on the runway. You can see it explode shortly after. I wonder why they didn't abort the landing.

Once a plane reaches a specific speed for that model/configuration, takeoff is the only option. Additionally, this aircraft was likely at close to max weight given that it was headed for Hawaii, and there are bunches of warehouses right at the end of the runway. A different video shows where the plane (possibly the landing gear?) ripped a trench in the roof of one of the warehouses.

Very sad.

Thanks for the information. Imagine being the crew, likely knowing your (basically non-existent) chances of a successful turn around with the amount of fuel they had on board.
