Living the PyeongChang Dream: Korean skaters strive toward 2018

Second South Korean qualifier event take splace this weekend:

Standings after the short:
Ladies:
1 YOUNG YOU 67.46
2 DABIN CHOI 65.52
3 EUNSOO LIM 65.30
4 YELIM KIM 62,13
5 JI HUN TO 59,42
6 SOHYUN AN 55,58
7 SOYOUN PARK 55,24
18 HANUL KIM 47,14
I guess 4 of the top 7 ladies are not age-eligible. Unfortunately that does not seem to help Park to make it :drama:

Men:
1 JUNE HYOUNG LEE 77,62
2 JUNHWAN CHA 75,24
3 SIHYEONG LEE 68,14
4 SEJONG BYUN 63,01
5 YOUNGHYUN CHA 61,49
6 JINSEO KIM 60,24
Seems like Lee is on his way to home olympics.
---

Side note: 9 men, but 35 ladies competing
Side noe 2: Seems like the Kim siblings are no pair anymore.

If Park can hold her position tomorrow, at least she can go to 4CC. This ranking competition alone determines the 4CC entries.

At least!
But the 2 girls going to Olympics won‘t skate 4CC‘s or?

If they got selected for both Olympics and 4CC's, it's up to them.

KOR fed has some strange ways of deciding the different team.
How are the worlds spot selected?

4CC's: Selected by the Ranking competition only. Each country has 3 tickets.

Worlds (junior and senior): Selected by the National only.

Olympics: Selected by the total sum of the points from Challenge + Ranking + National

Envelope: Selected by the total sum of the points from Ranking + National

---------------------

This system was originated from the time when there was zero senior GP entry from Korea and nobody thought of participating in the European B competitions. KSU wanted to give the athletes two competing opportunities (Ranking and National).

If more and more athletes get invited to senior GP's, then KSU has to reconsider their selection process.

Those are very healthy leads from both Choi and Hanul on the ladies and JH Lee on the men. They are basically in.

Article confirming the leaders in the Olympic race after the second ranking competition: http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/culturesports/2017/12/03/0702000000AEN20171203005600315.html
Choi had won the first round of the Olympic trials in July. The national championships on the first weekend of January will double as the third and the final qualification round, and the combined scores from the three rounds will determine who will get to represent the host nation at PyeongChang 2018.
Choi leads everyone in the ladies' singles with 350.16 points so far.
There are two spots up for grabs in the ladies' singles, and Kim Ha-nul is in second place with 333. 35 points. Kim finished her competition on Sunday with 164.20 points.
An So-hyun is in third place with 319.93 points, after earning 157.49 points on Sunday.
He [Lee June-hyoung] has 459.12 points after two rounds. There is only one Olympic berth available for South Korea in the men's singles.
In the men's standings, Cha Jun-hwan moved past Kim Jin-seo into second place, thanks to 224.46 points at the latest competition. He has 431.58 points so far.
Kim only managed 187.29 points this weekend to fall more than 20 points back of Cha at 410.78 points.
Articles published before the second ranking competition:

Min/Gamelin: http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/culturesports/2017/11/30/0702000000AEN20171130010700315.html
As the only ice dancing team on the ice, the upcoming competition will essentially serve as a rehearsal for the Olympics for the duo.
"Since we don't have any major international event between now and PyeongChang, we're really focusing on cleaning up our elements," Gamelin said. "We want to make everything look more polished so we can really present a good program at the Olympics."
(It doesn't sound like they plan to compete at 4CC?)

That's some turnaround from Cha to make up a 27 point gap to grab the Olympic berth from the man who technically earned the berth in Nebelhorn.

It's quite the upset but the KSU has made their criteria extremely clear from the very, very beginning and that it is black and white. I dislike the system because injured skaters had to compete through injury this summer and in the winter. It's very sad for Junehyoung but at least we know exactly why it happened.

Congrats to Dabin, Hanul, Junhwan, Kyueun, Alex, Yura and Alexander!

Since last season when I saw him on the JGP I had the feeling that Cha would produce the best finish for the S. Korean skaters so I’m glad to see that he’s on the rebound from his injury and the underwhelming start to his season.

I feel so bad for June-Hyoung. To earn the spot at Nebelhorn, then lead the race and lose it by 2 points in the last minute.

However Jun-Hwan is definetly the better skater.
