I watched Knives Out 3: Wake Up Dead Man and I think I like this one over the first two films. These whodunnits are more fun than anything else. Daniel Craig, Glenn Close and Josh Brolin are completely over-the-top while Josh O’Connor is so likable as the priest in the middle of this mystery. I’m here for all of it. There are plenty of good supporting performances from our list of suspects. Good popcorn watch…
 
no, any movie that is discussed on ESPN means I mentally draw an x over it and move on to something else

not that I would know unless someone here told me

I totally agree. This one brings the mystery lore, a good look at politics, skewers the religious right and mostly gets the churchy bits right. Loved it!

We just watched it last night. I really enjoyed it, but I'm not sure if it was the best of the 3. It didn't follow the expected formula exactly and that threw me off. I may watch it again with no expectations.

Saw Hamnet today with my sister. It was…good. Didn’t live up to my expectations for some reason. Beautifully filmed and the acting was very good all around. Just didn’t feel like it lived up to what I was expecting.

I caught most of it last night although I had to record Persuasion and I missed Pride and Prejudice. The 1940 version of "Pride and Prejudice" is a delight. I don't try to compare it to any other versions and just enjoy the lightness and froth. In 1940, people really needed it. There's a tiny snippet towards the end when Darcy tosses his gloves into his hat - truly wonderful.

The production design is incredible. Guillermo del Toro can make a visual feast like few others. I am not usually into remakes but I make an exception for this man.

We watched “The Batimorons” on Prime last night and enjoyed this Christmas movie from the Duplass brothers. It was fun and thoughtful and not an ounce of some of that syrupy, fake sweetness you see in other holiday offerings.
 
I watched a couple of “Awards buzz” films on Netflix yesterday.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery - My score: 8.5/10. It’s overall good but the pacing of the murder being solved is a tad uneven. But if this was a just world, Josh O’Connor would be winning an Oscar in his career before Timothee Chalamet - assuming Chalamet wins for Marty Supreme.

Frankenstein - My score: 9.0/10. It’s a shame that Netflix didn’t give this a proper theatrical run. I will never understand it. Because this film is GORGEOUS. I think this is probably the best film adaptation of the novel ever done. Also, it’s much better that Jacob Elordi replaced Andrew Garfield as The Creature. Elordi was perfect for this role, IMHO.

I’m back home from watching Marty Supreme. Because it’s still in it's opening weekend, I will put my review in spoiler.

Are you a Timothée Chalamet uber fan? A fan of the Safdie brothers and interested to see how well Josh directed solo compared to Benny (The Smashing Machine)? Do you enjoy stories of ambition while being obnoxious? Then you will want to see this film!

I give Marty Supreme a 8.0/10. I was hoping to like this film more than I did. Marty Supreme is about Marty Mauser (loosely based on Marty Reisman) who is obsessed with being the biggest table tennis in the world. The problem is, he has no problem burning bridges and being a sleaze to almost everyone in his life.

What's good:
1) I think Josh Safdie is a better director than his brother Benny. The potential is definitely there that Josh will get better.
2) Can Timothée Chalamet win as Oscar for this performance? Yes. Should this be the performance that he wins an Oscar for? I don't think it should. It really depends on what the voters do with DiCaprio in OBAA.
3) The cinematography and editing is done very well.

What's MEH:
1) Honestly, they could have cut Marty's relationship/fling with Kay Stone (Gwyneth Paltrow) out of this film. Also, the scene in the park where they are just laying on the ground. :confused: 😬
2) Was the point of the film to ask us the "forgive" everything Marty does because he is pursuing greatness? Or was it to make me do what I did about thirty minutes in and and start rooting for Marty to fail? I was a bit confused when the film ended.
3) Did we really need to see in the opening credits where the sperm are racing to reach the egg, fertilize it, and then it's turns white....and into a Marty Supreme table tennis ball? :scream:
