Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Box Office Mojo - U.S. Domestic Box Office: Weekend 41

So is Tron: Ares……actually good? 🤔 Right now, I’m prioritizing watching all the “awards movies” I can plus other movies I typically would never miss. But Tron: Area just looks MEH so far.

Notable opening next week: October 15 - Ballad of a Small Player (Limited 🇺🇸), It Was Just an Accident 🇫🇷 (🇮🇷) (Limited 🇺🇸).

October 17 - After the Hunt (Expands), Good Fortune 😇, and Frankenstein (Limited 🇺🇸).
Frankenstein is a netflix movie so will be streaming soon

Yep - But it will be showing at the Landmark Cinemas in the DC area this weekend. The chatter I’ve seen from the festivals is that Frankenstein looks great on a movie screen but they are confused 🤔 as to why this is going to mainly stream on Netflix. Especially considering that this is apparently del Toro’s “dream” project.

But of course I’m going to see this on Netflix, even if I get to see it now. 😆

I saw Kiss of the Spider Woman last weekend. Unless you’re a big fan of the novel/musical, Diego Luna, and/or Jennifer Lopez, you’ll probably want to skip this.

My overall score: 6.0/10. I think they didn’t make us care enough about the “musical story” with the real life prison life and revolution. It felt haphazard even though I think the actors did the best that they could.

I went to this last night and I thought it was fantastic. I thought it did a really good job from comparing the gritty, awful prison life to the fanciful technicolor of the grand Hollywood musical. Tonatiuh was phenomenal. There were a couple of uneven moments from JLo in the dancing (technical issues which are granular and don't matter) but overall this is one of the better movies I've seen in the last couple years and I think is on track for an Oscar nomination or two.

Absolutely love Bruce Springsteen but not quite sure I want to see a movie about him.

I’ll be seeing it right after work on Thursday and will post a review (with spoiler) ASAP afterwards.

Apparently, it’s just about Springsteen developing the 1982 Nebraska album. I think producers are figuring out that biopics are usually done better with just a section of a person’s life (like with Bob Dylan and A Complete Unknown) instead of trying to cram an entire life into 2-3 hours. 🤓 I thought Elvis (2022) was overall done well, but I’ll admit to being a bit 😪 by the end.

You think the film will get some Oscar nominations? It's a big failure at the box office in its opening weekend and is quickly disappearing from the theatres, which makes me think that its Oscar chances are slim to none. I can see JLo probably getting a Golden Globe nom but that's about it. I think the problem with KOTSW is that it doesn't have any recognizable songs and was never one of those popular "must see" musicals during its run on Broadway.

I think it's possible yes. It actually just opened here but I think it was a mistake to release it so early. It would have done better with a mid-late November release. I think JLo will make a push to get a nomination and I thought Tonatiuh was absolutely spectacular but I'm under no allusion that he will receive a nomination. I think JLo and costuming are still possibilities. Will I be surprised if they don't? No, but will I be disappointed? Yes, I will.

Saw this a few years ago and I still come back to it from time to time. I really enjoyed the quirkiness of it, and they actually got voice actors who could sing, so the music is wonderful.
I was sucked in by an Instagram clip. The first time I watched it, I was like it's ok, but I've seen it 3 times and I love it. The music is great and I enjoy the quirkiness, too.

Just got back home from watching Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere. Being that it's in its opening week, I'll put my review in spoiler.

Unless you're a die hard fan of Springsteen or Jeremy Allen White, you should probably skip this.

My overall score for this film is 6.8/10. This film covers Springsteen's (Jeremy Allen White) development of his 1982 Nebraska album and include banter with his manager Jon Landau (Jeremy Strong) and dealing with his relationship with his father.

What's good:
1) The film is shot very well and White does all the singing in the performing, creating, and recording scenes. I think that White's vocals were fairly close to Springsteen's.
2) White and Strong gave very good acting performances with the story that they were given. I don't think they are warranted award nominations, though.

What's MEH:
1) So.....what was the point of this story? I still don't think that I really care about the Nebraska album.
2) Honestly, this film made me want to hear only the songs in the Born in the U.S.A. album.
3) Hair/Makeup: At no point did I actually think that I saw Bruce Springsteen on the screen. I just kept seeing that guy who's really great on The Bear. They didn't give White enough physical "transformation" into the character.
