Just got back from seeing One Battle After Another. Being that it is in its opening weekend, I will put my review in spoiler.

Are you a fan of Paul Thomas Anderson's films? Leonardo DiCaprio? Benicio del Toro? Sean Penn? Are you intrigued by the "Oscar chatter" surrounding this film? Then you'll want to head to the theater and see this film!

Spoiler: My review of One Battle After Another

I give this film a 9.2/10. I think this film has a real shot of winning Best Picture and DiCaprio can very well win his second Oscar. But there's Hamnet (among other films) that isn't coming out for a couple of months. And the Best Actor race is looking INSANE with DiCaprio (OBAA), Mescal (Hamnet), Clooney (Jay Kelly), Day-Lewis (Anemone), White (Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere), Chalamet (Marty Supreme), and Jordan (Sinners).

Bob (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a pot smoking "loser" who was a member of the revolutionary group "French 75”. Bob lives with his daughter Willa, who's being the "grown up" in the home. Willa's mother (Teyana Taylor) abandoned the family and everyone in French 75 to avoid prison. Willa is very involved in martial arts and her instructor is Sergio (Benicio del Toro) who is also a leader in the town's immigrant community. In his past French 75 activities, Bob's nemesis was Colonel Lockjaw (Sean Penn), who now wants to get into the "Christmas Adventurers", a white nationalist order. The Christmas Adventurers are the manipulative forces behind the immigration crackdown in the U.S. and feel that they need Lockjaw to further there "utopic" mission. But Lockjaw has an issue in his past and has to go after Willa to resolve it. The former members of French 75 must work together to keep Willa safe and the chase leads to many twists and turns.

What's good/great:

• The screenplay, cinematography, and editing are just AMAZING.
• It was incredible how DiCaprio moved from being a hysterical father to a "bum" that just smokes pot all day to a maniac that is literally doing EVERYTHING he feels like he needs to do to save his daughter.
• I think the film does a superb job of showing how different moods of revolutionary movements can work and how certain members can be different within those movements.
• The car chase scenes through the desert were . I think it would have been incredible to see it in IMAX.
• I didn't realize that I needed Benicio del Toro play a martial arts instructor. But apparently I did.
• The final plot twist involving Colonel Lockjaw was and . There were people in the audience who actually laughed at what ultimately happened to him.

What's MEH:

• I felt that the use of the score got a little excessive. I would have preferred to have just heard the "natural noise" of the story.
• So, Colonel Lockjaw was just eventually able to walk away from that gunshot and car crash? I think that we needed to see more of how that actually happened.

I watched Eleanor the Great this afternoon. Being that it is in its opening weekend, I will put my review in spoiler.

Are you intrigued by Scarlett Johansson making her directorial debut? Are you a fan of June Squibb's work - especially Nebraska and Thelma? Then I would highly suggest getting to the closest theater that's showing this film. There's aren't a lot of theaters showing this where I am at (DC area), so I'm afraid that this might be the only weekend to see this film in theaters if the box office sales aren't high enough.

Spoiler: My review of Eleanor the Great

My score for this film is 8.5/10. I don't know why the critics' rating for this film are so low.

Eleanor (June Squibb) is an elderly Jewish woman who lives in Florida with her best friend, Bessie. After Bessie passes away, Eleanor moves back to NYC to stay with her daughter and her grandson. While at the local JCC, Eleanor accidently ends up in a support group for Holocaust survivors. Eleanor befriends Nina (Erin Kellyman), a young NYU student, and the two encounter a journey of discovering the importance of friendship, relationship, identity, and ultimately the truth.

What good/great:

• This is a very competent directorial debut for Scarlett Johansson.
• June Squibb gives a superb performance.
• This films has a lot of humorous moments (but not belly laughs), which I think was a really good balance of the seriousness and sadness of a lot of the other moments throughout the film.

What's MEH:

• This film could have gone into more depth into the past relationship between Eleanor and her daughter and why it's so lacking.

Absolutely loved it. I actually loved the score but I am a music nerd. I am going to it again on saturday

I might see it again while’s it’s still in theaters but there’s so many upcoming movie in October I want to see.

Next week, I want to see The Smashing Machine and especially Anemone. I can’t believe we’re going to get Daniel Day-Lewis in another film.

I'm taking my mom to see it for her birthday <3 My cinema is only getting th3 smashing machine next week. Definitely going to see it. At OBAA we got got 2 trailers featuring the same lead actress Jessie Buckley: Hamnet and The Bride!
