Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Saw Nobidy 2 today. It was ok, had some fun fight scenes (the whole second half was basically one long fight) but nothing groundbreaking

Yeah, that's why I'm probably going to wait for streaming on this one. I enjoyed the first movie, but I'm thinking this one is just going to be more of the same, essentially, so I have no great urge to go see it in a theater.

I feel like a curmudgeon, but I only snickered twice at The Naked Gun. And I loved Airplane and Spaceballs. Oh well.

It wasn't as funny as I thought it was going to be. Overall I did enjoy it, but I wasn't laughing until I cried like I did with the original. Still, it had its moments. Liam Neeson is better at comedy than I realized, though Pam Anderson was funnier. I think it's sweet that they appear to have found real-life love. (Liam has been faithful to Natasha's memory for long enough to be able to move on without criticism of any kind, IMO.)

Doesn’t look like there is anything opening anytime in the near future that I would want to see.

I really, really want to see "The Roses," as Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are two of my favorite actors. Beyond that, I don't see much either.

More Highlander news: Karen Gillan has joined the cast as Connor MacLeod's (mortal) wife, Heather. Looks like shooting will start sometime toward the end of September.

I loved the War of the Roses, but I am not sure about this new one, from what I read about it.

Now that I am free from my prison, I want to go to the movies. But I've missed so many that I can't decide what to see. Some of the ones I want to see are on the verge of being on streaming but are still in the theaters. I am interested in Superman, Fantastic 4, Elio, and Freakier Friday

I watched "The Instigators" on Apple tonight. I like Doug Limon movies. They can be implausible but certainly entertaining. And this included a stellar cast and a lot of action. I also thought there were interesting snippets of the score that would work well for skaters.

I saw Ne Zha 2 when it came out earlier with subtitles. The subtitles were a mess but the animation is amazing, very well done

Thanks. 😊 I’ve been nervous about seeing this in theaters. I’ve been skeptical about how good this film actually is - especially with the run time. I’m thinking this is likely winning Best Animated Film. I don’t see any small independent films winning like The Boy and the Blue Heron or especially Flow.

The english dub bombing theatrically isn't a good sign for Ne Zha 2 winning honestly. I think it's going to depend on who's actually campaigning the movie for the Oscars. If the deal A24 signed with the original production company has them being the ones handling the campaign the movie is probably cooked. A24 has consistently proven themselves unable to handle campaigning more than one movie and they have The Smashing Machine and Marty Supreme (debut solo features each for the Safdie Brothers) and The Smashing Machine in particular is already getting some decent push because of Dwayne Johnson.

If the original production company for Ne Zha 2 is campaigning for it then it could at least score a nomination, the subtitled version did well in North America and the Academy is a lot more international than it used to be.

But right this second the global phenomenon that is KPop Demon Hunters is going to be hard to ignore and the next major animated release is Zootopia 2 in November. Now I'm personally not sold on a Zootopia sequel but that's not in indictement on the movie. I just don't really think the first one was good enough to warrant a sequel nine years later.

The Academy becoming more international is arguably why the smaller indie animated movies have won the last couple of animated film Oscars and the Animated category is wide open right nown which is why KPop Demon Hunters is the frontrunner even though the name is definitely one that would give many people, including I would imagine, Academy voters, pause. I wasn't going to watch it because of the name until some of my friends wouldn't stop talking about how good it was. They were right, it really is very good.

Flow kind of came in out of nowhere last year so the Animated category this year is one that I'm not even going to hazard a guess at until the festival season gets going.

The current odds on the Awards Expert app have moved to being for KPop Demon Hunters and Zootopia 2.

The only independent animated film I’m seeing getting any buzz is Arco. It’s being distributed by Neon and will have a limited release in the U.S. in November. Here’s the teaser trailer.

There’s a movie called Scarlet that I’ve been seeing a lot of talk about, usually with Arco as movies that aren’t out yet but could do something, on the Oscar Race subreddit but of course until it starts being seen by people it’s hard to say if it’s a contender not.

I saw relay. It start off really good but the twist ruined it. Riz Ahmed was awesome in it though. He really is a great actor

I'm going to the Jaws 50th Anniversary re-release, caught stealing and the toxic avenger this weekend ($5 movies this weekend at cineplex)

I may have to watch this.
It's very fun. Some of my mutuals on Letterboxd had started watching it and liking it but I'm not a KPop fan so I had just kind of shrugged it off. Then I was kind of forced into watching it by a couple of my friends from work but it was 100% worth it. The songs are really great too.

Also, for any Canadians here, co-director and writer Maggie Kang is from Toronto.

I finally saw Kpop Demon Hunters. It was delightful and the songs were great! I do think the story was a bit trope-y but I didn't care. I want to watch it again!

I watched it because my niece kept talking about it. She's a huge KPop fan and already was a Twice fan, but it's popular with other people as well. I thought it was fun, but I was surprised to learn just how very popular it is. It's the number one English language movie ever streamed on Netflix. And the sing along version was tops at the American box office last week and is now on Netflix.

I am a regular in all the movie subreddits but really like r/boxoffice

r/boxoffice is pretty good as well - particularly about breaking movie news. r/oscarrace tends to be bluntly honest about the awards hype.

I’m seeing a double feature today - Caught Stealing and Jaws: 50th Anniversary (IMAX). I’ll post reviews as soon as I get home.

Update: If you can, go to the theaters and watch Jaws on the big screen. Especially in IMAX. My rating: 9.5/10. The audience I was in all applauded at the end. And cheered when the great white exploded. 🦈
