I saw The Penguin Lessons today with a friend. There were 3 people in the theater. It was fantastic! Funny, sad, heartbreaking, heartwarming, profound, all in turns.

Set in Argentina in the late 1970’s, just immediately prior to and following the military coup, there are so many parallels to what is going on in the U.S. today. I also have a personal connection to that time and place. A cousin of mine, Horatio, was a political exile from Argentina some time after the coup. So it really hit home for me.

The penguins were very cute and good listeners!

Minecraft is MASSIVELY popular. My kids are obsessed, my 20something coworker is a fan, it really has as universal appeal as anything. And I’m sure Jack Black and Jason Momoa are making the marketing people really happy with their bromance

I was luckily able to see an early screening of The Amateur last weekend. Being that it doesn't open until this weekend, I will put my review in spoiler.

Do you like spy vigilante films? Are you a big Rami Malek and/or Laurence Fishburne fan? Do you like watching Michael Stuhlbarg in films and wonder when he's going to get "his moment"? Then I'll recommend this film.

Overall, I give this film a 8.3/10. I enjoyed watching it, but it lacks a real "hook" that you need in a film like this. The film does seem to leave a possibility for a series, but I think if that happens, it'll need a bit more substance. I also thought that it took about an hour for me to warm up to Heller actually being a vigilante who was going to get vengeance for his wife.

One BIG nitpick that I had was while the "tricks" Heller executes against the killers were clever, am I supposed to believe that someone with a 170 IQ that works as a CIA crypto coder would actually take out his phone and play a YouTube video on a "how-to" while he's picking the lock on that Paris apartment? PLEASE. :duh:

But Malek did fairly well with the script - and Laurence Fishburne and Michael Stuhlbarg executed their scenes superbly.

This film is rated PG-13. I'm not sure why because Heller does kill several people and there is enough violence shown that I thought it would get a R rating.

The Rotten Tomatoes critics’ reviews are coming out!

The Amateur - Seems like the “regular” viewers so far mostly agree with the review I posted in my previous post.

Warfare

Drop

Overall, it looks like the movies should be fairly good this weekend.

I love it! I hope it is for best stunts and not for best stunts in a good movie! I don’t want to be invaded by lesser stunts in good movies rather than a spectacular stunt in a summer blockbuster that’s maybe mediocre

Saw "The Amateur" today. It was a satisfying film, good amount of action, good acting all around. I didn't realize it was PG-13 until I was there, my mom could have gone with me and handled it (she doesn't do suspense, thrillers kind of movies, but I think she would have been ok with this one).

So….if it’s not until films that come out in 2027, that misses Dune: Messiah, The Odyssey, Avengers: Doomsday, the next Spider-Man film, the next Hunger Games film, and that untitled Iñárritu film with Tom Cruise probably doing insane stunts.

Steven Spielberg’s UFO movie is also scheduled to release in 2026, and maybe there’s some good stunts in that as well.

I’m still 🤔 about the PG-13 rating. I thought if someone intentionally kills a person in a film, that automatically made it rated R. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m thinking about seeing Warfare on Sunday or maybe tomorrow night. It’s 95 minutes so I’m hoping the pacing will be pretty good.

Did you see Sinners has 100% on RT so far

The reviews are raving about this so far. Thinking about seeing this next weekend because The Wedding Banquet looks too stupid.

Really interested in seeing the reviews about Eddington. It is apparently very controversial

I’m 🤔 about Eddington, Alpha, and The Phoenician Scheme.

I’m also wondering if The History of Sound will be this year’s Queer (2024). Also, it seems like Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor has been in 273,937,436 projects lately.

Warfare is a great movie. I felt the same way leaving as I did The Zone of Interest. The sound is amazing and it is disturbing and moving.

Just finished rewatching 12 Angry Men (1957) on Turner Classic Movies. I knew it was nominated for Best Picture (lost to The Bridge on the River Kwai). It’s a classic well worth watching if you haven’t already seen it. I think this would have certainly won Best Casting if it was was a category then. We’ll see what happens when Best Casting is awarded for the first time next year.

I’m not sure in real life how a first degree murder case like this would have been presented nowadays. Or how a jury would actually go from 11-1 guilty to 12-0 not guilty.

I may go see Warfare or King of Kings (I’ve heard great things about it and we are heading into Holy Week) tomorrow. I also may want to watch Sinners next weekend.

OOH!!! Getting ready for Cannes!!!

Eddington - Official Trailer

This is definitely going on my list to see in theaters for 2025! I’m not sure how others will respond to it. I guess a lot of it will depend on the buzz this movie gets coming out of Cannes.
