Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Speaking of disappointed, now that Wicked is streaming on Peacock, Mr Mac and I watched it. Mr Mac's reaction when it was over? That was long. I had a stronger reaction. I hated it. The entire movie is so long and padded. They show something, sing about it, and show it again. The entire movie could have taken 45 minutes and been really cool.

It took me three nights to watch all of it, I am with Mr. Mac, that entire thing was sung.

The only musical I really ever liked was Chicago, maybe because it had more sophisticated content to it, and was less fairytale, less happy go lucky, I don’t know…

I also remember Evita in 96 with Madonna, and that was entirely sung as well, but I somewhat enjoyed that one, but I haven’t enjoyed any musicals from Dreamgirls to Mamma Mia, I think I’m a bad gay, I just don’t like them.

I streamed it on Peacock also and my reaction was ‘boy am I glad I didn’t spend $$$ to see this in a movie theater and boy am I glad that I didn’t spend even bigger $$$ to see this on Broadway.’ There’s a good story there that is trapped in something so artificial looking; I found it painful to watch 90% of the time.

I used to think I hated musicals but it turns out that I hated musical movies made in the 60s. :lol: I enjoy them better now as the singing seems more integrated and the plots less hokey. But I still prefer seeing musicals in the theater than on film. i.e., Chicago, Cabaret were great in the theater.

The Broadway musical is better than the movie IMO. I didn't hate it anyway.

I read the book ages ago. I thought it started strong but then got kind of muddled and I really didn't like the ending. I thought it just sputtered out. For the Broadway show, I thought it was better but it kind of completely changed the theme from the book which annoyed me. Which is funny because I didn't like the book but then didn't like that they weren't more faithful to the book. LOL

Here's the thing. I liked the changes in the movie and the addition of a few things from the book. But the PACING. Good lord, the pacing ruins everything IMO.

Btw, I thoroughly enjoyed Gregory Maguire's "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister" which I think is a much better book. Make that into a Musical and a Movie!! :D
 
Before being a TV and Film Actor, I'd watch 1 to 3 movies a year.

Has anyone seen the movie ‘Assessment’? I hope to see it in April. The trailer looked interesting but it could be a scary movie.
 
I saw Novocaine last night. I was entertained. The amount of gore in it isn't for everyone, but I found the concept innovative and the lead actors had excellent chemistry. This was my first time watching Ray Nicholson (son of Jack). He definitely has his father's intense eyes. Very believable in the villain role.
 
Has anyone seen The Penguin Lessons? It opened last week, I believe. Trailer looks cute. A friend and I are planning to go see it on Sunday.

I heard good things but it isn't playing where I live
 
Saw a story about another interesting looking movie, The Friend, which stars Bill Murray, Naomi Watts, and a Great Dane, named Bing in real life but Apollo in the movie, who has unusually expressive eyebrows according to the review I read.

Most of the time the Broadway version is superior. My all time favorite Broadway musical is Rock of Ages, and IMO the movie version sucked big time (though some of my theater friends were in it, so I enjoyed those parts). Note to casting directors: Don't EVER cast Tom Cruise in a singing role. He was awful.
