Kolyada Withdrawn from Olympics, Replaced by Semenenko

Should team Russia have left theithA team home and not sent them to Europeans in Estonia?

Some of us speculated about them doing that before Europeans.
Perhaps they should have, but as I keep telling non-Euros over and over and over and over and over Europeans is a special event for European skaters even in an Olympic year.

PS: Could you please change your GIF avatar to a non-GIF one? Thanks.

I don't think Kolyada would have been smart to try to get CV early on. We didn't have the treatments then that we have now and even though young healthy people mostly didn't get seriously sick, we do know that sometimes they did and it has ended the careers of elite athletes. If I were in his position, I would not take that chance.

But even if he did decide to do try to get it (or even just not try not to get it), it wouldn't necessarily have helped since scientists are saying that a previous infection with Delta or Original is NOT protective against Omicron. Which means he could have gotten it twice. That's a lot of training time to lose and is kind of like playing Russian Roulet for developing long-term symptoms.

I think he was smart and also unlucky.

Agreed. Smart & unlucky.

On the other hand, hopefully he will come through this infection without any serious long-term side effects. His odds would seem much better now, with his having been vaccinated, than they would have been earlier in the pandemic.

Per a local radio station, Washington State has had 3 deaths from influenza this flu season. This is, in fact, the worst record in a few years.

But sure, let's just decide that covid is at the same stage right now as your average endemic disease, why don't we? Per the NYT, Washington State is currently averaging 46 deaths a day from covid.

Just putting it out there and these are from the NY Times. We are wearing masks in New York and yet we still have high ********* transmission rate. Florida is not wearing masks and their transmission rate is lower. Don't know how to do a tiny url but google times and case count and you will get all of this information. Florida keeps getting attacked for its mask policies but it is doing well.

Ok then. Whatever you say. LOL

Newsflash: NY and Florida are not comparable as states. Florida does not have the population density that NY has. NYC alone is enough to drive the rates higher because of how many people live here in a small very dense area.

Reuters article (Jan. 27):
Russian biathlon coach Sergei Bashkirov tested positive for COVID-19 upon arriving in Beijing for the Winter Olympics, the Russian Biathlon Union said on Thursday.
"He (Bashkirov) is in quarantine in Beijing," Sergei Averyanov, spokesperson for the Russian Biathlon Union, wrote on Telegram messenger. "We are waiting for the result of a second test."
Biathletes Irina Kazakevich and Valeria Vasnetsova, as well as coach Mikhail Sashilov and massage therapist Roman Nikitin, tested negative but were unable to fly to Beijing with the rest of the team, the sport's national governing body said.
Their departure has been delayed by at least a day so they can submit additional documents required to take part in the Games.
"They will need additional documents confirming they have been previously infected with COVID to enter China," the Russian Biathlon Union said in a statement.
Several Russian athletes, including figure skater Mikhail Kolyada and skeleton racer Nikita Tregubov, tested positive for the coronavirus before travelling to China. While Kolyada has been ruled out of the Games, Tregubov is hoping to recover in time so that he can still travel to the Chinese capital.

While at any one point in time, Florida may be doing better than NY, the opposite is also true so what is needed is an overall look, and to be really accurate, it should be after this is all over and we can better understand what happened and all the data has been collected.

This will happen -- the data collection and analysis. Whether or not it leads to changes in recommendations and approaches as needed is another matter. Sure hope so!

One thing that needs to be examined is when to ease up restrictions as states and localities have been all over the place on this with mixed results. Another is whether or not the Feds should be setting standards (i.e., floors and ceilings) that the states have to comply with even as they tailor their responses to their circumstances.

Reports in the Russian press that Gleikhengauz and Kogan have tested positive.

Further search of the Figure Skating Ru twitter account shows that Kogan denies the report.

Well sh*t. I have a feeling we won't know anything about anyone else until the competition begins. At least the second report claims that neither are in Krasnoyarsk yet (I hope they really aren't there now).
Seriously, forget masks, put the medal contenders in full hazmat suits.

Kogan is now claiming the tests are false positives, and they will still fly with the team to Beijing.

Of course a false positive is possible, but I can't help but find this all a little suspicious.

Fingers crossed!

#TeamJapan for gold including my dear Wakaba! :2faced:

They can claim false positive all they want but they still have to test once they are off the plane in China. What’s their plan for that?
Well....if the Russians can sub athlete's urine with wrong sex/ and or animal urine and get away with it......should be pretty easy for their brilliant diabolical scientists to have developed let us say a capsule to take 24 hrs b4 a test which makes you seem negative. Easy peasy.......
