KIDS WHO FOLLOW-IN THEIR PARENTS FOOTSTEPS IN THE SAME DISCIPLINE AS THEIR PARENTS IN SKATING.

There are actually people who are naturally extremely hyper flexible. I am one of them. I have never done any gymnastics or other training but can still sit and put both feet behind my head and I'm over 60 years old.

Yes, I'm also flexible. I could do split without any stretching. My shoulders are very loose, many people asked me why I did not become a swimmer. And yes, these didn't become worse in my age. But my back "only" normal for example I couldn't do a Biellman as Radio does or Lipnistkaya did and for example Soldatova's extrem flexibibilty is far from me.

We won't hijack this thread but but it just goes to show that all skaters and ballerinas are not being hurt or tortured when they bend or stretch their limbs in what looks as almost impossible.

Exactly..it is not necessary...to be successful...nor is it necessary to be starved and have to live on liquid diets..You are losing your strength that way and you need the strength to do maximum performance.

But everyone who is a skater can not necessarily be hyper-flexible, so there are obviously those skaters who are more tight-jointed who have to work harder at stretching and flexibility. Also, when you are hyper-flexible, you really must be cautious to guard against a tendency for over-straining that you aren't consciously aware of in the moment, which can eventually lead to injury.

Wow, it's interesting that some fans here didn't realize that Rocky and Isabelle are married with a daughter, Gabriella Marvaldi (who competes in junior pairs for the US). Rocky and Isabelle have been married for a long time (since 1996). But obviously they didn't marry during the height of the Internet social media age.

I imagine you haven't seen Isabelle and Rocky with their daughter in the kiss 'n cry then either. ;)

The family has skated together in some of the family-related exhibition shows:

Also, fyi: Isabelle Brasseur's niece is Justine Brasseur, who is a junior pairs skater for Canada with Matthew Ostiguy

Tatiana Malinina's and Roman Skorniakov's son (Ilia) is the current US intermediate champion. He is also the 2016 US juvenile champion

Ilia Kulik and Katia Gordeeva's daughter Liza is skating competitively. I think she is a junior now (corrections are welcome).

I don't think.
I wanted to show this video. I knew will be poster who won't like it and I waited it from North-Am. ;) In Russia, and in many other European countries stretch the children in this way and in their very early years.

Just because they do it, doesn't mean that it is safe or healthy.

Their muscles, ligaments, joints are very flexible much more easier to stretch than later.

That exactly is the problem. Because everything, including bones, is still soft and flexible, bones can deform/contort. The ballet school I attended in France didn't teach the children the 1st position until they were 5 or 6 because children's bones are still so soft before that so that it's easy for the children to go past their natural ability which will then have health consequences (hip deformation).

And yes, ballet dancers stretch as well and they may start dancing at the age of 3 or 4 but many don't attend a professional school until school age when it's already safer to stretch.
I think the many surgeries Plushenko himself has had are proof of the danger that comes with flexibility.

Here's a blog entry from a physical therapist outlining the health risks of overstretching of young children. It's not the only one out there but I don't think it's necessary to post more than one link when they're all saying similar things.

It's not about stretching in general. It's about stretching responsibly vs overstretching too early. There is no need for a four year old to do splits yet.

I started ballet in grade 1. My teacher was with the Sadler Wells Ballet. We did not get to do fun things for a long time. It was all exercises and body form and lines. When it was time to start doing arabesque and attitude and pirouettes she demonstrated, we did it perfectly because of our strong core and those hours at the bar and those famous words drilled in us...head up, shoulders down, upper body stretched, stomach sucked in, butt tucked in. We were told the rules for going on toe was 10 yrs old or 5 yrs of ballet under your belt.

I think Artur Dmitriev's son is also a skater. Not sure if he still competes though.

Good question as to whether Artur Dmitriev Jr will compete this season - his last competition was Universiade (4th)

As for other men's singles active, off the top of my head, there are:

Takahito Mura (father Takashi went to 2 Worlds in the early 1980s)
Peter Liebers (father Mario went to 3 Worlds in the late 1970s)

ETA: Graham Newberry (father Christian went to 1 World Championship in 1989).

I think Yuka Sato's parents competed at one of the Winter Olympics. Her father coaches figure skaters, so I assume he is a figure skater himself.
