John Curry Documentary - The Ice King

Thanks for the tip off I hadn't heard about this but I will definitely be going to see it when it's released.

*** ‘We were opposites – John hated skating showbiz’ : Dancing on Ice’s Robin Cousins remembers his skating hero John Curry :
https://www.radiotimes.com/news/201...n-ice-john-curry-bbc4-storyville-documentary/
It’s 42 years since Robin Cousins stood rinkside at the Olympic figure skating arena in Innsbruck and witnessed John Curry skate to gold. Cousins was 18, the youngest skater in the 1976 competition, and still four years away from the night when he would succeed Curry as Olympic gold medallist. For Cousins, Innsbruck was all about experience and learning, and he finished tenth. He remembers how it felt to watch Curry that night.

“It all came together for John in Innsbruck,” explains Cousins, now 60. “Like him, I wanted to do something different from everyone else – but John’s ethos was purely aesthetic dance perfection. He loved the perfect line, the perfect jump, and it made him mesmerising to watch. “Everything was so precise, and yet there was such freedom in that performance. It was balletic and beautiful, but I still find it a very masculine performance – his aura and command. Every performance of John’s was a statement.”

in case anyone is wondering how to watch it - it is available to rent on Amazon prime as well as DVDs being available. I don't know if that's just in the UK : https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ice-King-DVD-John-Curry/dp/B078Y34P1T

For those in the UK it's available until 31st July on BBC IPlayer it's under Storyville but the director is James Erskine so it's definitely this documentary.

Thanks so much for this. I was able to watch the documentary on that BBC IPlayer (yay for VPNs).

What a fascinating man he was. A true genius on the ice.

I also watched it this weekend. It is a great documentary but I was glad that I'd read the book previously at it provided a visual aid. The book has a lot more detail than the documentary so I think the two would compliment each other well - especially with the bits of footage from the professional shows that John did.

It was also a pleasant surprise to have Johnny Weir skating and talking in the documentary.

The only thing I found a little odd was that sometimes the reading of the letters changed some of the words that were written in the letters. I don't know why they did that when the words were up on the screen and you could see what had actually been written in the letters. A very minor thing I just thought it a bit odd.

Over all though I loved the documentary.

Insightful John Curry Documentary Has NY Premiere: https://olympics.nbcsports.com/tag/john-curry/
While British filmmaker James Erskine is too young to have seen legendary skater John Curry (1949-94) perform live, he had seen performances on television and was certainly aware of the artistic influence of the 1976 Olympic men’s gold medalist from Great Britain. After reading an article about Curry’s complicated life, he felt moved to bring the story to the screen.
“The idea of someone who had to win a gold medal to fulfill his artistic dreams seemed to me remarkable,” said Erskine. “Curry had to overcome these incredible odds to succeed on one level, and having succeeded parlayed that success onto another level.
“When that combined with his personal struggles and what was going on in New York in the early 1980s, it seemed to be a story worth telling,” he continued.
Erskine’s documentary film, The Ice King, debuted in the United Kingdom earlier this year. It had its U.S. premiere on Nov. 9 in New York City and is now available on iTunes. Among those in attendance at the premiere were several people featured in the film: Nathan Birch, Timothy Murphy, Cathy Foulkes, JoJo Starbuck, William Whitener and Meg Streeter Lauck.

I just rented it on iTunes. It brought back so much, both from the era when I truly started to follow the sport, and from the terrible time of AIDS hysteria. What struck me most was the use of the still photographs. The man couldn’t hit a bad position!

ETA, it was $3.99 to rent.

Thanks for bumping this thread up; it prompted me to d/l and watch the movie. The film was nicely done for the most part, but in the end a tragedy.

I wish they had named all the company members. As Cathy Foulkes said (I think it was her), most if not all of the male members are now dead. It would have been nice to have had their lives noted.

Trivial erratum: they had Johnny Weir as the U.S. national champion for 2002, 2006 and 2010.

^^ That's so weird. I would say they were referencing the Olympics years, except that Johnny only attended the 2006 and 2010 Olympics. He was either still competing as a junior internationally in 2002, or just about to come up to compete fully as a senior. He first competed at U.S. Nationals as a senior in 2001-2002 season, after winning junior Worlds in early 2001. Of course Johnny won U.S. Nationals in the senior division from 2004 - 2006. He had to come back from a lot of adversity (some of it self-inflicted) to even make the 2010 U.S. Olympic team. I realize that you already know this @BittyBug, so I'm just mentioning here for clarity.

A little checking by the filmmaker's researchers is all it takes, but it's also easy to make errors when dealing with all the details involved in producing a documentary.

I thought someone mentioned that the John Curry documentary is available for streaming online. Is it on Netflix, HBO, Hulu, or PBS? Where can I find it? Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide details.

Weir's first Nationals at the senior level was 2001 in Boston where he placed 6th (I watched him compete both at Eastern Sectionals in November 2000 and then in Boston).

Info recently posted in the TV Alerts thread (that prompted this one to be bumped up):
The film is in English https://www.svtplay.se/video/21448922/john-curry-kung-pa-isen
It is geoblocked, you need an IP from Sweden.

Here is the official trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pyaMyb2vWM and the official website https://www.theicekingmovie.com/. I liked the docu very much (and the book btw). The docu is availlable on itunes

Thanks @Sylvia. I thought Johnny skated at senior Natls in 2001, because I too recall having seen him for the first time on television. The way Johnny's competitions were listed on Wiki caused me to miss confirming the fact that he competed for the first time in seniors at 2001 Nationals. At 2000 Nationals in Cleveland, I didn't see Johnny perform in the junior men's sp in which he placed first. I did see the fp, where Johnny struggled and landed in 5th. Conversely, Evan Lysacek was 5th in the sp and first in the fp, somewhat foreshadowing the trajectory their later rivalry would take.

Thanks for the info on the Curry documentary. That's it, I-Tunes is where it's available!

Finally!!! The Ice King will be available in the U.S on October 8.
I'll watch it on a streaming service if I have to, but I'm really hoping it will be on the big screen at one of our indie move theatres.
