Joannie Rochette Forges a New Path

That was a great article about Joannie! It’s so cool to see her pursuing something like medicine in her post-skating career. So much respect for her.

Interesting to hear that she really thought about continuing after 2010. A “what-might-have-been,” for sure. I feel like she could have been very competitive in 2011 and 2012 at least, and maybe up through 2014.

ITA. She could have just rested on her laurels and easily found a post-competitive career in FS, as so many skaters do.

I am very impressed with what Joannie has accomplished. I think she made the right decision, as difficult as it was. As she gets into her career as a physician she will be glad she did it right away and did not wait.

Nice article.

I find it interesting that we never heard anything about Joannie's medical school aspirations when she was competing. So many young skaters, we hear about them being so good in school, or they're in pre med at University etc.. But then Joannie just went and did her thing and now is about to graduate. I know it surprised me, but just because it was never talked about in the media.

Anyway, good for her to have found her calling after skating.

In her Players Own Voice podcast interview from last February Joannie talks about always being interested in the medical field but having thought she had left that possibility behind forever when she chose to pursue high-level competitive figure skating. She thought she would be too old to be admitted to the program but during the time she was performing in shows she became aware there was a change where they were allowing older students into the program. (I listened to this some months ago so my memory is a bit hazy but it was something like that.) So particularily since she self describes as a shy introvert, it is unlikely that anyone other than perhaps her parents would have even known she was even interested until she was actually accepted into the program as a mature student.

I always thought her mom's sudden death due to the heart attack made her consider working in the medical field. I didn't know she was interested in the field long before that. Thanks for sharing the info. I always loved Jaonnie as a skater and a person. Happy to know she's walking on a path which she wanted to pursue.

This article from 2009 says she had thought she wanted to be a doctor when she was younger but was thinking about Pharmacy or something in the medical field. Her saying she wanted to be a Pharmacist was something that had stuck in my head from years back. I think she might have mentioned a few times when she was competing.

So much respect for her to have pursued this path. :respec:
