ISU Grand Prix Assignments 2018/19 season

As a Med, H/D and J/C fan who also likes Higuchi, I like Skate Canada's lineup enough to actually go. Men are sorta meh but that's rarely my focus anyway.

I was in Grenoble last year (wretchedly sick) and other than the lack of food options around the arena, thought it was great. The weather was nice, not too cold, and the scenery is :swoon:

I really want to go to Paris in November and if I do I may try to got to Grenoble for this event. A lot depends!

Not to mention the skaters who will be there, that aren't skating.

I think that all of the skaters who are "skipping the GP" are actually retiring. It's just the sponsors/talk shows/etc are less interested if you're retired.

Could be that, but could also be that they are struggling a bit seeing themselves as anything but skaters. For those who are going to school or have graduated from post secondary it may be a little easier. They have another life to pursue. For those who have “just” skated their entire life, letting go can be a bit scary. Baby steps are sometimes the way to go.

I think a lot of it was motivation for Mirai.

She missed qualifying for Worlds in 2009 after winning Nationals the year before but was too young to go. She then fought to make the Olympics in 2010. After that she lost motivation and basically never made the world team in the next quad. Frank Carroll felt she wasn't hard working enough and they split. She fought through that but picked herself up too late in 2014 and wasn't named to the Olympics / Worlds despite a strong Nationals - and that's the big kick she needed for her to climb back up to where she was in 2016 onwards and make the Olympics in 2018.

Now that she has been to 2 Olympics and finally has an Olympic medal, I doubt she has the motivation to go on and train the way she did in the past 3 seasons. She didn't even keeping up with the 3axel for Worlds.

What frustrated me most was, even with her fantastic free skate in the PyeongChang team event, not even an 8 triple long program got her remotely the marks she deserved.

How much more can she do to be on par with the Russian and Japanese skaters?

It's too bad she isn't doing the GP Series, though. I was wondering how she could transfer her experience with Dancing With The Stars to the ice. Nagasu was so expressive on the floor.

That would be my one regret - not being able to see what she can bring expressively onto the ice after her experiences with DWTS, although Mirai's lack of expression on ice was mainly due to her focusing on the jumps. I'm sure all the under calls (justified or not) must have caused her to not being able to be more expressive - not to make excuses.... Mirai is a totally different skater when doing exhibitions.
I will miss seeing her compete but I totally understand her not wanting to continue. Why keep competing knowing that your best efforts will never be rewarded accordingly. She has put up a good fight and I admire her efforts but I think ironically her hard work might result in having rewards off the ice rather than on the ice. Those judges will never give her a break...... It would be like beating a dead horse, what's the point.

Adelina Sotnikova totally became a great dancer after her run on RUS DWTS and it showed in her skating during her short-lived return after Sochi. I think Mirai can absolutely do the same.

For her scores, her programs really weren't as challenging so I get why she didn't get higher PCS. And she simply didn't have the speed and effortlessness of the RUS / JPN ladies.

Whether they are the best skaters and entertainers or not, I can't argue that the top Russian girls have programs which are designed to win.

Wakaba Higuchi was my favourite lady from the 2018 season

Ohh the long speculation game of GP's withdrawals replacements has started..

Im sad for Xiaoyu but health is first.

The next pairs in line on the SB list are:

- Liu & Johnson USA
- Stellato & Bartholomay USA
- Ruest & Wolfe CAN
- Hase & Seegert GER
- Poluianova & Sopot RUS
- Esbrat & Novoselov FRA
- Lu & Mitrofanov USA
- Walsch & Michaud CAN
- Pfund & Santillan USA
- Suzaki & Kihara JPN

SA and IDF become available: The two canadian teams have big chances to get the SA spot and French fed tends to invite obscure european skaters so Hase & Seegert more likely.

FYI: Chelsea Liu/Brian Johnson (USA) have split; Jessica Calalang is now skating with Johnson.

27 Stellato & Bartholomay USA - Rostelecom Cup
33 Ruest & Wolfe CAN - SCI
35 Hase & Seegert GER
39 Poluianova & Sopot RUS - returning to JGP, I assume
40 Esbrat & Novoselov FRA - IdF
41 Lu & Mitrofanov USA
42 Walsh & Michaud CAN - SCI
43 Pfund & Santillan USA
44 Suzaki & Kihara JPN - NHK
47 Barquero & Maestu ESP

Thanks, than its probably between H&S and the spanish team for the IdF spot.

Min/Gamelin split so one open spot for Skate America in dance.

:cry: I liked them. According to his instagram it's she who decided to end the partnership. If he indeed wants to continue and now that he has KOR citizenship I would suggest to search in the growing pool of lesser ranked KOR girls willing to switch. (what happened with Ho-Jung Lee)

Anyways.. Next 10 Dance teams in the SB:

- Fear & Gibson GBR (SA)
- Evdokimova & Bazin RUS (COR)
- Muller & Dieck GER (SA)
- Yanovskaya & Lukacs HUN (COR)
- Reed & Ambrulevicius LTU (IdF)
- Torn & Partanen (Finland)
- Tweedale & Buckland GBR (SC)
- Mansour & Ceska CZE (Finland)
- Koch & Nuchtern GER
- Garabedian & Senecal ARM (COR)

If Mansour & Ceska are indeed continuing and traning in US. I would bet on them. Reed & Ambrulevicius is the other obvious choice.

Yes, I had heard the rumours about M/C but hadnt seen anything official that's why I said if they are indeed continuing. Well, I guess this makes Reed/Ambrulevicius as the most likely option for the SA spot.

Finland could replace M/C with Evdokimova/Bazin or Yanovskaya/Lukacs.

And RUS could replace G&S with Torn/Partanen.

I don't know if this is the spot on thread for this, but I guess it's relevant. Gabby Daleman's posted this photo on IG of the Cricket gang. No Boyang and no Tursy.

I know it's something that's photoshopped for fun, but I guess Gabby (and also Jason) wouldn't post if it wasn't accurate?

It was posted on the Chinese skating thread that Boyang's switch to Orser didn't come through. Apparently despite the fed willing to pay he does not want to leave China.

As for Tursy, the rumours is she's back to Eteri.

Yes, I'm aware. So I saw this photo as a sort of confirmation;)

For SA, Tweedale & Buckland list on their ISU bio that they train part-time in Novi, so they could work depending on their plans. And they'll be at SC the next week. So they could be an option too.
