ISU 2025 GPF Men FS - Fa, A Long Long Way To Shun

What a great showdown in the final flight of men at the GPF.

Ilia made my jaw drop to the ground. Who does a spread eagle into a beautiful swish QUADRUPLE flip??!! Yes…that is a VERY difficult entry. Who else does that? Quad lutz euler triple flip!!! Incredible. Quad axel no one else even tries. 7 beautiful effortless quads. Okay folks this IS an Olympic SPORT and especially in men’s it’s going to be who can land the most difficult elements. Yes, I love good skating skills but really multiple rotation jumps are the hardest thing to master in skating and should be rewarded, as Ilia is by the current system. I really hate that costume on Ilia…can’t believe he can jump in it with all that stuff around his neck and shoulders. I thought he used a Japanese designer. Usually they are known for simplicity. Wish he would have found one of those! He’s such a nice looking young man and doesn’t need all the wick whack. I think his spins are very good (better than Yuma) and the raspberry twist in the middle of the last combo spin…well let’s see any of the other guys there try it. History making program. Just wow…props!!

Let’s face it to me skating skills are a bit harder to judge and quantify. And when you have 6 to 7 jumping passes, little time to really show those skills, let alone choreography. Even Yuma’s free I can’t see his skating skills as prominently as the short program because he has to jump much more. I take ice dance lessons from a former U.S. national ice dance competitor and his opinion is Alyssa Liu has the best skating skills in the women. But most people say Kaori.⛄

I’m in the camp that thinks Yuma’s program is too big for him. It makes him look small. He can’t afford that when Ilia skates so big. His spread eagles outside edge to inside edge are very nice. But if you have seen the edges and body line that Paul Wylie achieved on that same sequence you must look it up. Paul did those better. The short program favors Yuma if Ilia makes mistakes as we saw here. Skating skills will matter more when you can only do three jumping passes. But he quickly loses any advantage there in his free skate with much lower tech content. More jumping passes mean less skating and choreography. I’m worried about Yuma also because he is rarely skating clean since last season. He was 4th in the free….that was fair. His dad always seems so stearn with him. Added pressure??
His short program here is one I will rewatch here though. And I rarely want to rewatch his performances. That performance was wonderful.

Shun should have been second. He did so much more technical content all clean, with good skating skills and spins. Shun has really learned to compete consistently this year. His coach is hilarious with his OTT reactions while Shun is stonefaced or slightly smiling. 😅. The audience was audible laughing too.

Grassl. I am longer actively disliking his skating. Still not a fan, but he really has improved little by little to the point he is actually watchable for me.

Adam….I was clapping so hard thinking Adam found his mojo again for the first half of the program, only to be bummed out for his three botched jumping passes. The axel is usually his best and reliable…uggh!

Shaidorov…wishing the Shaidorov of last season was still here. Loved his effortless jumping last year. Program is beyond horrible. I’m softening on Alexei Urmanov. He is so kind and supportive of Mikhail with his subpar skates. Most Russian coaches give their students the deep freeze when they mess up. Nice to see Alexei and how supportive he is.

I watched it last night. What a great event. Regardless of the errors from some of the men, the overall standard was fantastic.

Ilia is definitely in another realm compared to the others. But the others are all worthy GP finalists and I was so impressed.

Now the question is what does Ilia take from this competition. Will he try the 4axel combo again in the SP thinking he can come back from a double digit deficit since he proved he can do 7 quads in the FS or will he be smarter and play it safe and just do the layout he's been doing all season. He did look like a man on a mission in that FS he doesn't like to lose anything and that mindset makes him a champion.

Hi, there, have you seen any of Yuzuru's costumes? Or Shun Sato today? Or Daisuke Takahashi? I can keep on listing off the Japanese men who've sported whickety-whack covered costumes over the years. His costume designer also did all of Hanyu's costumes. Here's her IG account - https://www.instagram.com/stm_ito/ - simplicity is NOT her style, lol.

I'm just catching up on everything.

First of all, I will say how I feel about Ilia. He is, without any question, the best JUMPER the sport has ever seen. Perhaps a once-in-a -lifetime phenomenon in that regard. So, like everyone else, I watch his performances with my jaw dropped open as I see him do what no one has done before him .... and, most likely, no one else will do for a very long time into the future. Having said that, I never feel the desire to rewind and watch his programs a second time ... because there really isn't much of a "program." How could there possibly be when you are completely focused on doing that many quad jumps? To say that nobody stands a chance of winning against him when he successfully does 7 quads is the absolute truth. It's a jumping contest and he wins because, like it or not, the jumps are what get the biggest number of points ... and, apparently, the PCS as well. So, I can't fault him for doing what he can do and he knows will work. And, he also has the mindset of a champion, which is SO extremely important. I fully expect him to win Olympic gold and then his next goal will be to be the first skater to land a quint in competition. He may very well succeed. Records are made to be broken and he's aiming to break them all. I wish him the best of luck. He seems like a very nice young man.

Yuma Kagiyama ... probably my favorite "all-around" male singles skater right now. Jumps, skating skills, interpretation, musicality, presentation .... it's all there BUT he doesn't seem to have the competitive mindset to do it all when it really counts. At least, not at this point in time. Too many little errors here and there when the pressure is on. And, I agree with those who say that this FS program doesn't seem to be constructed in such a way to best show off his talents.

Shun Sato .. just keeps amazing me this season with his consistency. If he could pull off THAT free skate immediately after Ilia, he's got nerves of steel. Good for him. I was really impressed.

Daniel Grassl - I think I was happier for him than anyone else in the competition. He had a fabulous skate. I loved the program; and, obviously, the audience did as well. The standing O was well deserved and I couldn't stop smiling at his joyous reaction to his scores in the K/C. My hope is that he can repeat exactly what he did here in Milan. If he does, even if he doesn't medal, he will be happy with how he performed in front of his home audience at the Olympic Games. Wishing him the best of luck.

Adam Siao Him Fa: Not sure what his problem is. The program itself? Stamina issues? Nerves? Something certainly isn't working for him. He's a wonderful skater who is having a very rough time of it this season. I feel sorry for him and hope that, sometime between now and Feb., he can get his mojo back.

Mikhail Shaidorov - Just doesn't seem to be his season. Another skater who has all the goods but can't put them down on the ice when it really counts. Such a shame.

I was talking to someone last week who commented about Ilia's jumping. He said that in the air he is like a cylinder. His position is so perfect and tight. Probably helps that his body shape also assists that. But we both agreed he is the best out there.

That explains a lot.

A lot of times, the ones who spin fast in the air don't get much height so when they grow into their adult bodies, they either can't get harder jumps or lose them. But Ilia spins fast (in the air) and gets great height. I think not a lot people are able to do that.

Absolutely. And he is also so straight in the air. Totally upright.

I know that a coach can teach correct good technique and you can have a good student who takes everything on board. But it does feel there is something more there that enables him to be so technically proficient that he makes it look incredibly easy. And all the while fulfilling the judging criteria that means everything is as good as it can get. Every time.

I think it helps that ilia absolutely loves what he does.

I think Ilia truly loves skating - He is undoubtedly a great skater, but he also seems to be one of the biggest fans of skating.

If you are in the arena, you notice that he comes out very often to watch others' practice/skate.
In France, he watched the men's run-through until almost right before his group.
In Canada, he came out to watch the first group practice while his group was last.
At shows, he often comes out to watch others performing.
