Helene caused a lot of damage to Anna Maria Island (our favorite), Longboat Key, Lido Key & Siesta Key - the barrier islands south of Tampa Bay. It looks like they could be ground zero with Milton. The islands south of there are still recovering from Ian. I hope they are safe.

She manages a restaurant that was wiped out by Hurricane Ian; they just re-opened a few months ago and she's been out filling sandbags for the restaurant all day.

So far, her house has always been safe during hurricanes, but :scream:.
 
Latest NHC update for Hurricane Milton

It looks like Milton will hit Florida a little bit later than we thought. But it’s still expected to be horrific.

This is probably her sticking point. If she’s always stayed and always been safe, then it lures one into a false sense of security.

I do hope that in addition to the usual hurricane supplies like a battery-powered radio, food, and water, that she has thought through how she plans to escape her home if it’s flooding and has the supplies to do so.
 
I didn't realize Clearwater Beach was as impacted by Helene as it was. They haven't cleaned up yet and now Milton. DS and I visited there in early 2023.
 
My condo recently had a class with the local chief of police talking about emergency preparedness. He gave some useful info including relevant phone numbers and websites/apps for local information. But one tip he mentioned is one I don't hear all the time - keep a cheap, loud whistle in your "safe" room for tornadoes or with other emergency supplies. They're cheap so keep some around the house. His reasoning was that if you ever get trapped or isolated, it's tiring to keep yelling and that a cheap whistle is both easier and more effective.

( i thought of this now because I was just doing some laundry and I did a quick double take wondering why I had a whistle hanging on the door. :shuffle: )

I am going to buy a whistle now and keep it in my emergency kit (after i create one).

I think this is actually more dire, as like Helene, it's probably going to dump even more rain and storm surge if it's moving slower. And if it strikes in the middle of the night, I'd think that has to make it even more terrifying to endure.

One of my coworkers was flying back from Jamaica today. I expect she'll have some airline/airport stories for me tomorrow. I've experienced turbulence on a flight from a still distant hurricane and when even the stewardess looks anxious, you know it's bad.

They say it will make landfall as a Category3 late Wednesday. Does it mean it will weaken by then?

I am hoping that somehow it won't be as bad as feared, but it is always best to prepare for the worst.
 
Milton sounds extremely dangerous but at least the early predictions have helped people be prepared and evacuate before it hits.

I hope everyone is safe. Property damage cannot be avoided but hopefully no lives will be lost.
 
The latest I'm seeing is that Milton will double in size by the time it makes landfall? Is that real? :eek:

From what I've been hearing on different weather forecasts - yes. When the upper level wind shear begins to rip apart a tropical cyclone, it causes the rain and wind to spread out across a wider area.
