Gymnastics News #23: Defying Gravity

The nerves are really showing all around. The 3-3 team final format really adds to the already anxiousness of the competition, even though it's been 22 years since we've had this format.

We have gymnast Vladyslav Hryko commentating. He said that for him the beam is the most terrifying apparatus in gymnastics. He doesn’t understand how girls do such difficult elements when he’s just scared to walk :D

Brazil pulled ahead of China by 0.6 with one left on each of their final rotations

And Andrade just did a great vault.. now it's likely France versus China for the bronze?

France passed China, too, by under one tenth with one left for each. Talk about beam pressure!

I don't know what John is referring to, but it looks like Melanie needs 13.099 to win France the bronze.

ETA- he just corrected himself.

Brazil's like "yeah fine get that score up we're ready to celebrate" and good for them

DJDS was amazing - will be interested to see how she does in all round.
Really appreciated the Chinese innovative skills on beam, and elegance on floor. (despite less-difficult tumbling). Helps me get over my annoyance with them for virtually ignoring the low bar on UPB (despite their pretty HB pirouettes).
And 'tard review: Brasil was REGAL. GB was snappy and sharp as usual - I like their incorporating Union Jack into the design.

They showed the medal ceremony after a delay and then showed an interview with the U.S team after another delay.

Happy for Simone and love seeing this mature woman doing gymnastics on her own terms. She's been through so much, this is a nice chance for her to be back in competition and seemingly having fun. Plus I'm sure Joscelyn and Leann would have felt bad if her injury cost them a chance at the gold and Leann did her best under the circumstances.

Congrats to Brazil and France as well. Happy for Rebecca and so nice for France to have such a great result before their home Olympics.
