Gymnastics #24 - The Road to Paris

In looking at the results list from Trials, they just went down the list 1 thru 7. That made it easy.

Honestly, the athletes made it pretty easy. About the only quibble would be Leanne over Tiana but Leanne is a better AAer. I suspect if Tiana was stronger on bars, she would have been the 2nd traveling alternate. She needs to significantly upgrade that going forward.

If it's really a boat parade, it will be fun seeing the USA basketball team trying to fit on a tiny boat.
There are boats of varying sizes that will hold the athlete delegations. I'm not sure if the entire Team USA delegation will fit on one boat or if they'll have two or three.

There isn't going to be the typical team entrance into the stadium like just about every Olympic Games i have watched since about 1972?

Sumanasekera, Rivera, and Roberson went from being relative long-shots coming in with nothing to lose, to possibly a shot at the beginning of Day 1 while the extent of the injuries and potential petitions were still up in the air, to bringing it when it was clear they had excellent shots at being the fifth member of the team tonight. :respec: :cheer2:

Well, this probably belongs in the general Olympics discussion thread, but...

The parade of nations is a boat parade along the Seine through the heart of Paris ending with everyone disembarking at the steps of the Trocadero - which is a large park/promenade with fountains and a reflecting pool directly across from the Eiffel Tower. They're building temporary stands and will have all the protocol portions of the OC there. The artistic portion of the OC is going to be performed/presented at various points along the Seine (I think a couple of bridges, then several quays along the river, including in front of the Louvre).

Personally, I'd opt to watch the OC from the comfort of a sofa given that they probably won't even see the full artistic presentation since they'll be sailing along the Seine (unless these tableaus are being performed over and over again as the boats pass by).

Okay another random comment before I go to bed because I can't stop.

Jade Carey's college coach, Tanya (Service) Chaplin was one of a few gymnasts in her era to compete both NCAA and elite gymnastics at the same time (this is back when they had compulsories which was an additional challenge). She actually competed twice at USA Championships as an elite while at UCLA (1987 and 1988). She also competed at the 1983 World Championships and made the AA final (she only made the team after something like 7 others withdrew - she was only 13th at the trials and it went by AA rank then - and we think injuries are tough now!). Anyway I know her dad is her main coach but it would be great if Chaplin got to go to Paris too.

I think Hezly and Tiana probably were, too, until the last week.
I meant total 13 competing last night, if you see the starting list. Hezly did very well and made the team! Overall a good team selection. 🇺🇸

I’m guessing that Brazil and China will be their main opposition, as Russia and Belarus are out. I see gymnastics only during Olympics.

They’ll have to replicate The Normandy to get Team USA on one boat! The waters of The Seine will spill onto the streets, Lol! 🚢

I mention The Normandie because the hotel version is close to my house in PR:

If they are using the boats that normally are used for tours on the Seine the largest of those will hold around 1,000 passengers. Since I think we have about 500 athletes and probably that many "extras" (coaches, officials etc...) it's possible that everyone could fit on one boat especially since we KNOW athletes whose competition starts at the beginning often skip (and of course some athletes are in French Polynesia, Unlikely to make opening!)

I hope NBC will leave behind whoever did the makeup for the commentators. Samantha P. looked like a drag queen, Tim's eyebrows were drawn on and looked weird, and Terry had on too much blush. The only one who seemed to escape was John Roethlisberger.

All of the gymnasts also had makeup that looked, well "too tiktok." Except for Jade. I especially dislike the trend of over-using highlighter.

Yeah, and I've been meaning to agree with you about this in the Bridgerton thread. ;)

apparently the women get only two non travelling alternates named. it is Kaliya Lincoln and Tiana Sumansekera

I wondered if they would maybe go with Shilese to keep her in contention if she is healthy again and a bar necessity opened up (but maybe that would not have been allowed because she only did one event)

I wondered if they would name a woman from the national team who did not compete at trials.

Thoughts on lineups:

Prelims
VT Lee, Chiles, Carey, Biles
UB Rivera, Chiles, Biles, Lee
BB Carey, Rivera, Biles, Lee
FX Lee, Chiles, Carey, Biles

Remove first listed athlete for team finals.
Hezly actually has the higher VT scores (high score & average) than Suni, but as others have said, I can't see her being left out of the AA and the difference in their scores isn't enough to make a difference in the prelims.

Beam - I actually agree with you on putting Jade in over Jordan but seeing how close Suni & Jordan's AA scores this weekend were, there is possibly a case to be made to let Jordan do the BB and battle for the 2nd AA finals place. The risk there is that Jordan's had two misses between Champs & Trials and put up really bad beam scores and with both Simone & Suni struggling some on beam as well, you're running the risk that you're going to need to use two really bad beam scores in prelims should all three have a night like last night. It shouldn't affect them qualifying in any way at all but... Eeeesh. Jade at least has been bringing a fairly solid beam score if not anything that you want to use unless necessary.

Hmm who might make EF:

Floor: Simone, Jade
VT: Simone, Jade
Beam: Suni, Simone?
Bars: Suni, Hezly?
