Gymnastics #24 - The Road to Paris

Ok this is kind of delicate but is Suni estranged from her parents? I had read online that she was, and I notice only her sisters are there watching her at the trials, and she's from MN.

Not sure about Suni, but I hope if it is, the media respects her privacy and doesn't comment on it. We don't need another Simone/Al Trautwig moment.
Also, IMO, they are spending way too much time on the families/parent cams. Show us more routines. And, if you're not showing us routines, then show us the actual athletes and their responses and interactions.

the coverage is also just so repetitive. After the 1000x hearing about Jordan's Air Jordans collection I feel like saying "ok, we get it. She's named after Michael Jordan."

It's not as bad as ABC back in the day during the Indy 500 when they would always cut to the wives in the pits just as someone was about to make a move and pass the leader. You just wanted to throw a brick at the TV because of their stupidity. Luckily they don't it so much anymore.

It’s because of sponsor :bribe: :bribe::bribe:, regardless of whether it’s the best preparation for the athletes. :blah:

It used to be that the team would now train all together until they leave for Paris. That would be the time to train with the same equipment they will use at the Games, if possible. I'd think floor and vault would probably vary the most.

Apparently there are some pretty significant differences with both the beam and bars equipment.

:COP:

sorry, had to do it.

Stephen is my cute nerd PH superhero, but I do wonder what happens if, as in Tokyo with Simone's troubles, Brody starts the comp and blows his knee again? (He was definitely less stable at trials than nationals, and still a bit overscored, imo). Will a one team member event specialist been worth the risk? 🤷‍♂️
I hope that the announcement of the women’s team is less cheesy than the men’s announcement last night. NBC milking it up to the max!

NBC basically announced the team 20-25 minutes before it was official, so to say the least it was pretty anti-climatic. I guess they reversed order the standings for the official announcement, which made it even less exciting. There's no suspense in announcing Brody (or Simone) to the team last, like.... duh.

Interesting. I can't imagine how much a balance beam could really vary. It's still got to be the same height, width and length. Bar tension could definitely be a very different matter for both the women and men.

The podcast I was listening to said that the covering/padding for the beam is different. The Gymnova beams are squishier in that regard and it can be difficult to adjust.

For bars - it sounded like the material used to construct the bar itself is less flexible with Gymnova, so it impacts grip and bar tension.

One of the nice things is this will be a fairly experienced team and I’m sure they have gone to a lot of competitions both internationally and for those with college experience where they’ve been on different equipment than the equipment they’ve trained on so they’re probably better at adapting than others.

I can’t imagine every college in the United States for example uses the same equipment and Jade and Jordan have both got experience every Friday or Saturday night. You’re in a different location with a different set of equipment.

Gabby Douglas posted this about Shilese:

It's sad but I'm glad Gabby found a friend in the gymnastics community. There was a lot of tension between her and the rest of the girls in Rio. To this day I think Gabby is not on good terms with Simone and Aly.

Just one example: I don’t think she was at Kyla Ross’s wedding yesterday - there were photos including Aly Raisman, Jordan Wieber and McKayla Maroney.

Yeah she doesn't follow any of them on IG either. She does follow a bunch of WOGA-related gymnasts like Skye, Hezly Rivera, Kaliya Lincoln ...

Just for reference, here are the scores from Nationals and Night 1 of the contenders for the 5th spot (decimal removed). I think they're close enough that tonight definitely is a make or break moment for all...

Well, Gabby did make victim-blaming comments after Raisman began publicly speaking out about abuse, see, e.g., https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/gymnast-gabby-douglas-apologizes-after-comment-about-sexual-abuse/.

OTOH, it seems fairly normal that people lose touch or tolerate their teammates while they have to, but move on with their lives once their time on the team has finished.

Well Gabby herself was a victim. It's sad but a lot of SA victims blame each other. The damage is deep.

Agreed, no one is required to maintain relationships. It’s just a bit sad to me that 4 of the “fierce five” remain close while Gabby isn’t.

I'm not doing it for matching, its just something I dashed off as a quick reference guide. Take it or leave it, whatever.

I posted a link from Courtney McGregor, NZ Olympian, describing how the beams are different.

Reading that, it is even LESS understandable why they aren't using that equipment for US Trials. Whover signed a sponsor contract without a provision of being able to use the equipment athletes will be using at the Olympics for trials needs to go back to negotiating school.
