Gymnastics #24 - The Road to Paris

Not watching super closely but fascinating to hear Bond still make the rounds in gymnastics floor routines year after year. It was all the rage in skating for three or four years 20 years ago (and basically went away altogether) but it doesn't die yet here.

Okay, USA Gymnastics and NBC need to get their act together and give us a little indicator on the screen when the gymnast goes OOB on floor. That's all. Simone had at least two OOB passes, I think, but I'm not positive.

ETA - well, one of them she managed to not go OOB but still...
Her toe pad looked like it went out on the second pass, on the right.

They may as well have a split screen. Half showing the comp and the other half plastered on Simone. Yeesh. The poor woman can’t even have a conversation without the camera man trying to butt in.

You know, someone needs to bring Bond back to skating. Just for you, lol.

Solid beam for Jade!

Hard agree with this. I mean her floor wasn't as high but she had a big bounce out and we wouldn't really need that score anyway.

Right now, Jade is scoring lower than Simone, Shilese, and Kayla, so she would definitely need upgrades to make an argument that she's needed on floor. They are saying she is going to do that, so we'll see there.

Skye on beam makes me nervous, but vault and bars for sure. Floor is her only weak spot, so her and Suni on the same team does leave a bit of a hole. Floor is sort of the team overall's weaker event, but I think that's partially because it's so easy to take deductions on floor.

As of right now I'd just say take the current top 4 plus Shilese. I feel like Suni's potential on bars is bigger than Jade's potential on floor.
I can't disagree with you based on Day 1. Let's see how everyone does on Sunday, but especially Skye. She's so headcase-y that I could see several bumping her out of 2nd and down the standings considerably.

Yeah, people will complain if we take the top 5 AA but sometimes that's how the math works.

Everything can change tomorrow and again at trials, just like Skye changed the equation with her Cheng today. That being said, I'm starting to feel like Jade and Suni are competing for a single spot.

Today definitely makes me feel like the door is closing on Joscelyn, Leanne, and maybe Jordan.

Feels a bit to me like 6 women for 5 spots: Simone, Shi, Kayla, Skye, Jade, and Suni feel like the mix right now.

Maybe but I do think that Skye is the most likely to blow her own spot up with her inconsistency.

Totally agree, she is hit a miss whereas Jade is solid but needs more upgrades and a bit of love from the Judges. Kayla also inconsistent, tomorrow will be interesting

I am not even going to try to pick the women's Olympic team this early but I am definitely rooting for Suni even harder after watching her compete tonight. What an inspiration to do so well after all her health issues and she's only going to get better too. Simone was awesome as per her usual (GOAT!), Skye's Cheng was SUPER impressive, I'm glad Kayla did so much better here than at Classics, Jordan seems ready to go as well (FX error aside), and Jade will need to throw some upgrades on her two solid events in order to make her case stronger for this team IMO. I am SO excited to see what these ladies bring for night two! :cheer:

I've never really liked Jordan's gymnastics and I don't know why. She does everything really well, I just don't find her exciting. Same with Jade.

So this is gonna be interesting. Kayla did really well here, as did Skye. Jordan and Jade are going to have to step it up. Suni seems on track to peak at Olympic trials.

My teams currently look like this:
Men - Malone, Richard, Young, Juda, Moldauer
I so wish I could add Whittenburg, but he made too many costly minor mistakes on night 1. I really hope he cleans up his landings on night 2! Hong really had a rough night 1 and will need to impress on night 2.

Women - Biles, Jones, DiCello, Lee, Carey
I so wish I could add Chiles because she is a great, powerful AA athlete with engaging artistry and personality, but her scoring on night 1 concerns me and she really didn’t need that huge error she made on floor. I love her though and hope to see great improvements on night 2! Blakely has been too inconsistent internationally for me to really trust her and keep in mind that she has never won an individual world championship medal, but she was really “on” night 1. Can she keep up that momentum?

I’m really interested in seeing how well Blakely performs the Cheng over the next three rounds of competition.

In a Blakely v. Carey match-up, Carey has the edge on international reliability, but 4 solid vaults throughout the selection process would minimize that advantage IMO.

And, of course, seeing what each brings on their second-best event (Blakely: beam; Carey:floor) will be important as well.

Watched the first Women’s night last night. Biles spectacular! (No “twisties” in Paris, please!) Kayla & Skye strong too. Suni’s lovely lines there too! The one that I can’t stand: Queen of Crudeness Jordan, weirdo outfit and all.

Maybe it's because I'm a beam/bars fan, and Jordan and Jade are weakest on those two events.
Jordan actually is one of our better bars workers. She hits handstands and while she doesn't have a lot of flashy skills, she is pretty consistent.

My team is Biles, Jones, diCello, Blakely, and whichever of Lee/Carey shows they can upgrade and hit routines that bring a bigger score than just taking another AA gymnast like Chiles or Wong.

Sorry but I can't see putting Blakely on this team. She's had too many misses in major competitions for me to believe she's reliable enough for the Olympics. Biles, Jones, diCello, Lee and Carey for my team.

My favorite gym blogger, Spencer, described himself as post-op, pre-chemo and felt well enough to blog.

FINAL
Biles – 60.450
Blakely – 57.050
DiCello – 56.850
Lee – 55.750
Wong – 55.550

If we take today’s scores and also add in Jones’ scores from Classic, then you’re looking at a highest-scoring five of Biles, Jones, Blakely, DiCello, and then Lee and Carey are tied for that fifth spot, both producing the same score. Chiles and Wong also right there only a tenth behind.

Blakely and DiCello the big winners today, but Lee will know that even a skosh of an upgrade on bars puts her in secure position. DiCello’s 13.850 on floor was the big result for her today as that’s right now the #3 floor behind Biles and Jones. People like Chiles, Carey, Wong, etc will need to focus on besting DiCello on floor in the coming competitions.

I haven't seen anyone calculate the highest scoring team based on averages from night 1 and Classics. But with so many players making upgrades through out the summer, that might be misleading.

Sunday will be very telling and critical for everyone in contention for the 4th and 5th spots.

Skye is only inconsistent in world championship team finals, lol, so I expect her to stay #2.

Kayla...I would love to see her have success, but she's been on the scene a long time and has her own consistency issues.

I'm getting too old for all this drama. 😉

Whoever selected the dance skills for Chiles' FX routine seems to be a bit ignorant of judging trends. She needs to count 5 acro and go for leaps that will be credited and less deduction prone.

But trials are three weeks away…..can these gymnasts really get that many improvements in by then?

BTW, oops about misspelling Jordan’s name. I’ve corrected it.
Look at how much they improved between Classic and here!

Interesting that you saw more out of bounds than the judges sitting there.

"Queen of Crudeness" congratulations.... you win as "crude poster of the day" She's probably not ear as weird as posters on here LOL!

Skye is my "well that was interesting" but she better visualize herself hitting all 4 routines 3 more times to have any hope IMHO

The second OOB pass I thought I saw in real time was, clearly, not OOB on replay but even Terry himself said he thought her heels had touched down and gone OOB on it at first so I'm hardly alone in thinking it was OOB. And you did read that I edited my comment to clarify that it wasn't OOB after all, right?

Yeahhhhhh... I think a few people here are forgetting about Classic just a couple weeks ago already when it comes to Skye's consistency.

Kayla had a rough time at classics, like a lot of people, but I would say she’s been more consistent than the average gymnast lately. I think she’s generally known for consistency.

Skye is known for being inconsistent, but mostly on beam tbh.

Honestly, Jordan is quite inconsistent.

Nobody is forgetting about that we just know that a single high vault score will trump consistency on anything else and honestly vault is the easiest one to be "consistent" on usually. Although if I just cursed her and she has a fall on her vault just note that I am leaving room for that possibility.

Well I like Skye Blakely for the airtight reason that her wolf turns are one of the few that don't look fugly.
