Gymnastics #24 - The Road to Paris

Tim has like 5 anecdotes. I’ve been watching gym for so many years I know where he’s going when he starts. It’s like, oh no, he’s going to mention those thievin’ breakdancers again. It’s like we’re married. I also made my husband get rid of the silky polo shirt after he wore it. (Not a good look for men of a certain age)

IMO, the main competition for the US men in Paris is going to come from China, Japan, Great Britain (although I don't know how strong they are now), and from some of those individual specialists who have qualified for countries without full teams. It's gonna be tough but they handled themselves VERY well at Worlds last year so it is possible for the US men to do well in Paris.

@canbelto really is right about the banana, er... maize just being a terrible color for any gymnast. We need to get Fred Richard some red, white and blue pants and shorts for Paris.

I don’t understand how Michigan doesn’t realize how much better it would look if they wore the maize for the top and then that dark blue for the shorts/pants. ?

The shirt they have on tonight is like 40% maize already. There's just SOOOOO much maize, especially when they're in the pants for floor.

The problem with taking Steven N. to Paris is that he does NOT do ANY other events so if you take him, you are forcing the other four guys to carry the majority of the load for the competition and the team puzzle just doesn't go together very well in that scenario. :COP:
But then who do you take? If it's Donnell, he has capability of stepping it up in three events but not necessarily even blowing it out of the water. I dont think Asher Hong is even in the picture for now, Olympic Trials might be a different story. Wiskus, same thing.

Unless there's a somehow consistent three on pommel throughout tonight and the next two showings, I still think Nedoroscik offers the most to the team. Of course, if he keeps scoring how he can. There's just a massive potential for loss of points on that event with pretty much everyone else.

Brody, Fred, Khoi, and Yul would be on my team but then I really don't know because then it does potentially push Brody to 5 events and maybe Fred, too.

But surprisingly not really moving up much. Still in 9th after 4 routines tonight. Sigh.
I know. In part it's because he had such a bad Night 1 and tonight the guys that were ahead of him aren't collapsing or biffing it badly enough to give him the opportunity to move up.

Juda did himself no favors on the FX.

As a comparison, Curran Phillips is AMAZING on PBars, like out of this world good, but he also has two other great events that he can contribute on so he would not only bring a big score but could also help out with two others if necessary. He fits the puzzle a bit better than a guy like Steven who can only help on one event (and honestly, most of the guys who KILL IT on PH internationally, are not going to be competing in the team event, they are individual qualifiers, so the other teams are in the same boat as us with trying to put together a team that can get three great scores on all the events).

After what happened with Simone for the women's team in Tokyo, and seeing other times in the past where a gymnast went down during the competition and the other gymnasts had to pick up the slack, if (heaven forbid) something happened to one of the guys on the team in Paris, especially if it happens during the actual competition, they literally cannot rely on Steven to fill in for anything because he doesn't even TRAIN anything else anymore. That's why I don't think they'll take him to Paris. One score is not worth the risk they take with something happening and not being able to fill in with an alternate for some reason (and it has happened in the past). Maybe it's just me being annoyed that the guy just literally stopped training any other events and is relying on his (somewhat shaky, even though he won a world title a few years ago) reputation as a PH specialist to try to get to the Olympics. :COP:

OK, back to the competition. :D

So…..wait….is EVO now the national training center? What happened to it no longer being at USOTC in Colorado Springs?

He didn't make it to the Olympics in Tokyo, that was Alec Yoder.

Especially with five guys for six apparatus. It’s a shame that the Air Force guy (Hoopes) didn’t do more events here.
