Gymnastic news #22 - Tokyo or bust

That Shane Wiskus routine on HB brought back bad memories of skaters hitting their heads in falls and then continuing.

Worth noting that we have a team at the Pan Am games who probably want to be considered for the Olympics as well. I expect trials will look at least a bit different. The college guys had a BIG head start on this year and that may carry all the way through but some of the other guys may start to look better now that they've competed some.

I still think our best bet is to send Stephen Nedoroscik and then a second women's team. :shuffle:

The highest scoring team is Brody, Yul, Sam and Alec Yoder. Alec is strong on 2 weak events for Team USA - Pommels and P-bars. Alec's 15+ score from his PH alone would help the total team score significantly more than Briones. And Alec is an actual threat for individual medal on Pommels scoring 15+ both days. He has an advantage over Nedoroscik because Yoder can do at least 4 events on prelims (instead of just 1 event).

I say USA should pick top 3 AA + 1 specialist on the team (plus 1 more specialist as an individual). I wouldn't send Briones just because he's 4th AA, with no chance of an individual medal. They should send 5 gymnasts - all with chance of individual medal. That would be Brody (HB), Sam (HB and PB), Yul (former FX world medalist), and then Yoder AND Nedoroscik (why not send 2 Pommel EF medal threats....double our chances in case one of them falls during prelims).

Carey, despite being fourth in the AA after day one, is not in the top 6 on any apparatus. And she’s almost two points behind second place. It’s very unlikely she’s going to get second AA at trials (to get an automatic berth) and also unlikely she’s going to get picked to be on the four person with those stats.
I know she can do more on vault and floor but I don’t see upgrades making a difference.

Assuming Biles and Lee are 1 & 2 at Trials, here is the best of the rest in terms of their placement on each event. Lighting candles for Lee's foot/ankle!

I'm adding the placements on all events, so lower number are good. For vault, I just used the highest vault score they had. This only changes things a bit for Skinner, who actually scored lower on her vault that counted for AA. If she'd used her highest scoring vault, she would have been 8th in the AA instead of 10th. I included Biles and Lee below.

Rank by adding event placements - name - sum of placements - AA Rank
1 - Simone Biles - 5 - #1
2 - Jordan Chiles - 14 - #3
3 - Sunisa Lee - 19 - #2
4 - Leanne Wong - 26 - #5
5 - Jade Carey - 28 - #4
7 - Emma Malabuyo - 32 - #7
8T - Grace McCallum -33 - #8
8T - Kayla DiCello -33 - #9
8T - MyKayla Skinner -33 - #10
8T - Shilese Jones -33 - #11
8T - Skye Blakely -33 - #12
12T - Emily Lee - 36 - #13
12T - Kara Eaker - 36 - #6

I did this all over again but divided the scoring range on each event into 5 groups. It wasn't really fair someone was ranked, say, 8th if they were close the highest 2 scores. 1 point for 1st group, 1.5 points for 2nd group, 2.5 points for 3rd group, 4 points for 4th group and 5 for 5th group.

Weighting results this way doesn't change the top 5, but it does change 6-13 quite a bit. Of course, none of this includes McCusker or Hurd (I'll never give up!) and none of it takes into account strengths and weaknesses of events. Skinner is very close, but she would be a 3rd vault finalist, which doesn't make sense to me.

Sam’s not making the team. He’s just too beat up and past his prime. Even in his prime he choked too many times on the world stage.
No I don’t think so, he showed session 2 by winning it that he just needs some more time and is getting better each time out. He was really good for session two and I would bet he will be even better for Olympic trials

So while I personally don’t think Hernandez has any shot at the Olympic team can she still get invited to trails?

US Women’s Open golf is in a playoff. The gym is on CNBC. It’s 602 on FIOS in my area.

Chiles needs a makeup intervention. Yikes, Simone is drawing on her eyelids now, too.
I’m having a flashback. I remember when I was in high school (back when I actualily took the time to do makeup...lol) I wore blue eyeliner on my upper eyelid just like Jordan is wearing that iridescent white line now. My mother hated that I wouldn’t blend it out. But I couldn’t wear it on my lower lids, it would run everywhere. I can’t wear liner on my lower lid now either, unless it’s Urban Decay or Makeup Forever Aqua eyes. Long story short....I’ve become my mother. I hate that eyeliner on Jordan, too. :scream:

Yoder was not selected for Trials. ETA: yet?

Additional athletes may be added by the Men’s Program Committee, and USA Gymnastics will announce the full Senior Men’s National Team later in the week. Official minutes from MPC selection meetings and the independent observer’s report will be publicly available prior to the that announcement.

I would love to eat my words.

OMG. What is going on with Simone’s eye makeup? Why would you intentionally make your eyes look like they have lines around them?
