Grease Live

Much more elaborate than NBC has done. Not my favorite musical. Be nice if they found some cast who looked high-school age.
 
I'm really enjoying it! You have to suspend belief on late 20s/early 30s actors playing teenagers, but other than that it's been pretty good.

I like having the live audience and getting some small behind-the-scenes moments.
 
I did like Boyz to Men doing beauty school dropout and it was nice to see Dede Conn play the waitress during the scene.
 
It's very pleasant. Better than Peter Pan Live and on par with Sound of Music. I agree that the cast is really too old for the parts but weren't John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John? Vanessa Hudgens and Julianne Hough are 27, Carly Rae Jepsen is 30 and the guy playing Zuko is 32. Alrighty then...
 
Ah, live tv, sound problems. This is really pretty good, but I wonder how many short dances this is going to spawn?
 
"Hopelessly Devoted" is Julianne's best singing job of the night.
 
I just read that Vanessa Hudgens (Rizzo) dad died a few hours before Grease Live went on the air. He had cancer and she is doing the show to honor his memory.
 
Wow, I'll have to say that production really raises the bar for future live musicals. To be a fly on the wall at NBC right now as they plan for Hairspray later this year...
 
Marchei/Hoterek should do You're the One That I want just because they'd be :smokin: in the costumes.

Oh, poor thing! It was incredibly brave of her to go on.

I meant to DVR this but forgot. Probably a subconscious thing -- I hate Grease. But these live TV musicals always interest me. I did catch a moment near the end and was pretty impressed with the set. It looked so much better than any sets NBC has used.

And Barry Pearl (Doody from the movie) was the guy running the dance contest.

AMAZING production. The costuming (and quick changes), the sets... really really well done.

A lot of miscasting, though. Aaron Tveit is not 'bad boy' enough for the Danny role (I thought Carlos PenaVega had a better look and attitude for the role). Vanessa Hudgens (who did well under the circumstances) is not 'bad girl' enough for rizzo. The girl playing Jan was sooo annoying. And Keke Palmer overacted quite a bit. Carly Rae Jepsen did a great job, and I though Julianne Hough was probably the best casting of the entire thing. She didn't have many lines, but she really fit the role, and she sang well (holy jeez her Hopelessly Devoted to You was AMAZING! She'll probably get broadway offers after that).

The staff members, especially Ana Gasteyer (principal), Eve Plumb (shop teacher) and Haneefah Wood (secretery) were great. One of the highlights for me was Jordan Fisher (Doody) singing "Those Magic Changes" at the diner.

I would't be surprised if this production won the Emmy for special programming (which usually goes to the Oscars or Tony broadcasts). Fantastic job with the production.
 
I thought Vanessa Hudgens did a great job. IMO, hers were the best vocals of the show. It was even more impressive given the terrible circumstances.
 
Loved the songs but I don't really like the storyline to Grease.

Thought everyone did a good job with this though.
 
It was very nostalgic, I really enjoyed it. Amazing the carnival set wasnt blown over, the weather was brutal.

Houghs was a nice surprise. I had no idea she sang.

For those who want to see it, it is free on the app for the station.
 
Hough had a country singing career going for a little while. Not long. But she released at least one album, I know.
 
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I think Julianne Hough is much better at dancing than singing. But she looks the part of Sandy.

I watched the movie countless times as a kid, so I think I have a certain view of some of the characters. The guy who played Danny was so different from John Travolta. I think I might have appreciated his performance more if I hadn't been so familiar with Travolta's version.

I watched the movie countless times as a kid. So, it was kind of cool to have a scene between the woman who played Frenchie in the movie (playing the waitress) with the new Frenchie, but it was a reminder of how much I loved the movie Frenchie. Same with Blanche. And it was hard to forget Travolta's Danny.

Do you mean not good material for an skating program or not good as a play/movie? I adore this musical & cannot only sing all the words but do almost all the dialogue. And I loved the casting for the movie. I missed this TV production so I'll check it out on the CNN website.

I loved this to bits.

I actually think this would work as a great Exhibition Finale Group Number. I loved the ending bows. The skaters can basically just copy the end, with "We'll Always Be Together" and the mashup of songs (ending with "Born to Hand Jive"). Would be great at Boston.
