Gilles and Poirier Cheer Thread

Simon Reed (British Eurosport) made some puzzling comments during their FD at Trophee de France, specifically the part about their results being disappointing so far this season. "Only third at Skate Canada..."

Did he get them mixed up with Weaver/Poje? Gilles/Poirier were thrilled with third place at Skate Canada because that meant they beat Cappellini/Lanotte! They couldn't reasonably have expected to be regularly beating Chock/Bates yet.

Just watched a vid of their FD from Skate Canada Challenge, wow, it looks even better than the last time I saw it! I'm amazed at how good this FD is and I can just see them really challenging for world podium status sooner than later. They just look like they work so hard and it shows in how trained their programs are. I really adore them and always look forward to seeing their programs. I think they are very creative.

Not the direction I'd like them to take tbh enough teams have been trying it and I like them bold and audacious. But they might also just be training different styles to stretch themselves in which case good for them. We don't know their music, right ?

It looks like experimentation and general exercises, because there's also this:

Mother Of All Creatures.... as my Mom says about Dev Patel, "He can put his shoes under my bed any day!"

They are the most innovative team out there as far as I am concerned... so I like what I see... I know with their programs Im always gonna want to rewatch them!!!!!

Honestly, I feel Piper and Paul are one of the very few ice dance teams who are in fact extremely versatile. They can perform any style of dance and express music from any era. One has only to look back at their very different SD's and FD'S since they became a team, to see actual diversity and their own excellent rate of growth as BOLD and AUDACIOUS, ATHLETIC, FUN/QUIRKY/COMICAL and even SUBTLE/SULTRY/ROMANTIC performer's given last season's stunning tango! So, if they do decide to go in a lyrical/modern dance direction, you can bet it won't be cookie cutter choreography, or movement like anybody else would perform, they will somehow own it and express it and perform the hec out of it, and you can count on a unique Piper/Paul twist that elevates their programs from good, to extraordinary. Unlike other teams who seem to have to repeat themselves, Piper and Paul take on new challenges every season. I can't wait to see what they have in store for us this coming season and more importantly as they completely mature as Ice dancer's over the next Olympic cycle...Hang on to your hats folks, the 2018 Canadian Olympic ice dance team likely composed of Virtue/Moir, Weaver/Poje, and Gilles/Poirier (order yet to be determined) will be truly epic, possibly the best compliment of uber talented Ice dancer's Canada has ever sent to a games! Each team unique and extraordinary in their own way, each a valuable gem, the problem is deciding between G/P's multi-colored, rare black, or fire opal, W/P's elegant, classy, timeless sapphire, or the rarest of the rare pink star, or the Moussaieff red diamond that is Virtue/Moir. all rare and precious and very beautiful, each with their own charm. I am excited to see how it will all shake out; are you?

Totally agree! And I hope there is a shakeup in Canadian standings. Absolutely no reason why G&P should not be first or second.

I like them a lot, and they could be second thanks to great programs, performance, and newfound consistency as opposed to W/P's twizzle problems although their skating skills (namely, Piper's who, admittedly, has improved a lot) are not at the level of W/P who had even improved their glide/flow last season yet. But first? No. And there is definitely a reason why. You may not like Virtue/Moir, their programs and/or their performance style, but in terms of skating skills, dance skills, musical interpretation, sense of rhythm, chemistry and connection they are truly one of the all time greats. Piper and Paul are wonderful, but they are not on that level.

No other team currently competing is on the level of Virtue/Moir -they are regenerated and better than ever, unless a health disaster strikes I fully expect them to remain #1 and I say that as a huge fan of Gilles/Poirier. However, IMO if any team can close the gap over the next 5 years and contend for gold in 2022 Olympic season, I would not bet against G/P to be the team that follows in V/M's golden skates...

SO TRUE! But of all the Canadian teams I rewatch G&P programs all the time.. Im a sucker for their kind of innovation and artistry!!!! LURRRVVVEEEE!!!!

Somebody from GS was at the So You Think You Can Judge event and told that Piper & Paul performed a program to "Gopher Mambo". This means we're getting an Yma Sumac SD, right? Right?!? I'M SO EXCITED!!!

(No official source yet, so I didn't post this on the 2017-18 programs thread)
I hope this is true. I love Yma Sumac, and that would also mean I'll be able to defend music that other people are bitching about, which will be a dizzying change of pace.

Now, if they do a Twin Peaks FD or something like that, I will explode with happiness. Or at least smile for a few seconds.

I so hope this is true! It is perfectly suited to them!

Today I've been clogging the Dance Hall thread just gushing about Piper&Paul so maybe it's time to change threads to gush some more...

THEIR NEW FD OMG. Having watched the partial run-through on youtube, I'm so happy they're doing a program that is reminiscent (sp?) of their Hitchcock FD (which I loved) but still a totally new program with an identity of its own. AND THIS ENTRY TO THAT LIFT OMG
:encore::encore::encore:
Haven't yet listened to the new IceTalk episode featuring P&P but apparently they confirmed Gopher Mambo in the SD so YAY!!!

Gush away nimi; I'll join you - totally blown away by this new FD. It's out-of-the-box and yet totally in and easy to relate to, all at the same time - perfect for an Olympic FD. Piper and Paul are a team that has a unique personality on the ice - not a clone of any other team past, or present! They just get better and more innovative every season.

GOOD LORD, why are they slightly in 3rd place after the SD at the Autumn? THEY ARE JUST wonderful.

ALWAYS interesting music, ALWAYS innovative choreography.

I know so many people like W&P but they just don't sing to me ..... at all.

I always go back and rewatch the programs of G&P because they are just so dang interesting. Ive never gone back to rewatch a program of some of the others.

Im gonna put this out there.... G&P are the MOST interesting team in the world and that includes V&M and P&C and H&D

Paul's mariachi sleeves made me smile, the good way.
On the first watch, I somehow missed the actual Laurine moment happening (I must've been busy watching Piper hamming it up or something) and then a bit later I was like "Wait WHUT?! When/whence did THOSE appear?!?" :inavoid:

Didn't Piper study something related to fashion industry at some point? The sleeves thing is just something I can totally see her coming up with... Anyway, A+ costuming!

Not feeling their FD. I feel like we've seen this from them before. I also wish Paul related better to his partner.
