Yesterday mdr (regional network) showed a best of
Riverboat, talk show, amongst others Jutta Müller, 1998, around 15' for approx. 10 min., available until 16.08.2020
A bit time-capsule-like ...
Jutta Müller won German Championships in Women Pair Artistic roller skating and Figure Skating after the War (only women pairs because of shortage of men)
short discussion why no same sex pairs nowadays (Hella von Sinnen, openly gay)
Talk about weight issues in figure skating. In Müllers view a tedious issue, but weight is of utmost importance, if you have to jump, and land the jumps. What about chocolate and Kati Witt? Kati liked chocolate and ice cream. Müller said, it happened, she threw Kati's ice on the pavement, but compromised and told her: After the championships we'll visit every ice parlour, and you can have as much ice cream as you like.
What about dicipline in FS? – in Witt's case: Good team all together – parents, teachers, coaches, all pulled together in the same direction
Who is easier to work with? Boys or girls? – Boys
What's the contribution of a coach for the success of an skater, can you name a share? – Can't name percentage. Skater needs talent, of course. Particularly in terms of ability to jump, "Schnellkraft" (how explosive), musicallity, appeal to audience, ability to impress judges. A coach develops these talents, has a big part in it. She always knew two years in advance, which music Kati will skate to, which costume to wear, with which hairdo.
Training: How many hours/days? – She talks about compulsory figures (dreadful segment in her view), which wasn't Kati's main strength, as she is a very vivid person. She is interupted by a guest (1), who wants to know, if their privileged life in the GDR was an issue, if they were thinking about it. – No, we didn't. What do you mean by privileged? Do you think about travelling? We travelled because of work: flight, hotel, putting on the skates and skate ..., again she's interrupted – But they facilitated everything for you, you had advantages because Kati was poster girl of GDR. – Well, you're right: I only waited 5 years for my Wartburg instead of 10. And it's true, we were looked after, and other sportswomen and men. We got food, we needed, healthy nutrition is important for success.
What was your take on GDR (again this particular guest asking)? – I was born there, I've lived there (audience is clapping), I felt, they need me here, I had skaters, waiting for me, depending on me. I've never thought about defection.
Another guest: You're daughter was never allowed to skate with Holiday in ice. Later on Kati Witt was allowed. Was it hard for you? – Yes, it was very hard for me. I thought by 1970, that Gaby should be able to use figure skating as a profession. So I went everywhere to get permission, again and again. It wasn't possible. It seemed like, the word "show" was something despicable. This word didn't exist in GDR. The Word "Ice Revue" wasn't appropriate, somehow. I didn't succeed. I'm happy that eventually Kati got to do Holiday on Ice.
Did you have a look at Playboy issue whith Kati's photos in it? – Of course.
One older guy (2) is complementing her on her looks, and wants to know, if she can teach him and his collegue figure skating. Some bantering about the need of zimmer frames. She invites them to Chemnitz.

(1) the guy pestering her with GDR-past: Jürgen Domian, who hosted back then a dial-in radio show at midnight. Always praised for his listening abilities. Not a great listener alfter all, it appears.
(2) The older guys: comedian Karl Dall and Peter Ehlebracht (both were part of Insterburg & Co.)
