From Russia with Love [#30]: If There Are Test Skate Videos, It Must Be Fall 2018

And one more thing about Tutberizde - I do not think that she dropped Medvedeva for Zagitova. I did think that she abandoned Shelepen for Lipnitskaya, and then Lipnitskaya for Medvedeva, and I was very mad at her for that. But I do not think that the same happened for Evgenia. I think Eteri wanted her to win the Olympics, and was ready to continue coaching her if she chose to stay and continue.

I don't think she necessarily dropped anyone for anyone else, she just dropped them because they weren't landing jumps with her technique anymore.

I completely agree. She absolutely adored and, IMO, favored, Medvedeva.

The trait that Eteri (and other coaches like Tom Z at times) that drives me nuts is treating all her skaters that aren't Medvedeva as disposable and replaceable. I'm genuinely not sure she understands that each of her skaters has value as a human being. That's why she can starve them.

And as much as I like Ted, I don't support him trying to paint her as so sympathetic with regards to her coaching, and it colors my views of him.

That was like a Trump interview...what to believe? I believe Eteri when she says that she only cares about results...but when she says (her) girls jump (quads) better than boys? I don't believe that. The technique she teaches looks very unstable. When she says she is looking out for the well-being of her students...that does not square with her record. When she says that she involves her students with the music choices...another alternative fact. Medevedeva said she had no say in her music choices prior to arriving in Toronto. When she pretends to be a nurturing, mother type...that does not jibe with the way she routinely throughs her students under the bus when they outgrow or defy her. Nothing about this performance seemed genuine.

Well, unfortunately that wasn't true..Some Russians brought early Averbukh's interview he said Med had chance to talk about the music...... You are right what to believe?

I imagine this is ISU damage control.

Eteri is the face of ladies skating and the ISU need people to like her. Send in Ted Barton for some pro-Eteri PR to show her softer side.

Just as long as Ted and the ISU is prepared to take responsibility in the long run for enabling her. But not likely.

I really think that people imagine that no one outside of Russia reads what is published in Russian media.

Didn't Med and Zag both say they got notified about the music but weren't asked to choose?

Earlier this season, Zagitova said her programs had been choreographed but she didn’t know the music yet. So it seems they took into account her previous request for Carmen but she wasn’t informed as the choreography was being done.

I read from Alina she wanted to skate to Carmen music in previous season but the team said she is young to it.

I hate that she is already Olympic Champion and still doesn't get to participate in the creative process of her own programs.

Fine for children but it is hard to imagine an adult skater’s needs being catered for in that group. But there’s not too many adult ladies in Russian skating, so maybe that’s not a big issue.

Not sure where to post this, so into the general Russian thread it goes! Here’s a clip of Pluschenko rehearsing for his ballet-dancing debut in SWAN LAKE, opposite Bolshoi prima ballerina Olga Smirnova as Odette the white swan!

This is for a special Xmas season production of a hybrid ballet/skating SWAN LAKE, directed by Sergei Filin (the former Bolshoi danseur and director who survived an acid attack). Dec 20-31 in Moscow’s VTB Arena (Dynamo). Other star skaters featured include Adelina Sotnikova as the Black Swan and Emanuel Sandhu as the Evil Magician. I hope that this will eventually be streamed or televised in some way!

I missed where this was a concern -- maybe the fluke trip in Vancouver before the FS? -- but Tatjana Flade tweeted:

To all who worry about #AlinaZagitova -everything is fine, she'll arrive Thursday morning in Saransk. #RussianNarionals2019 #FigureSkating #Eiskunstlauf #figureskate #фигурноекатание

Sergei injured himself jumping on the floor...the diagnosis is partial damage to the ligament of the left patella. I guess it could take several months to heal. :( I just think about the example set by Daisuke and hope he will still be motivated to come back...knowing him, I'm sure he will.

I’ve read that some coaches don’t let their students jump on the floor. Because the ankle is not protected the same in a simple sports shoe as it is in a skating boot.

There was a report of a possible injury. She missed practice today. But there are also issues with her coach's mother's recent death which explains why they both were not there. The other skaters from the group were.

Although it never occurred to me when I saw the interview - which I enjoyed - and it could easily just be a coincidence, if Eteri did say Boitano for that reason I think it would be absolutely hilarious, as much as I am on Medvedeva's side. That is just so petty I would have to admire it (again, not that we could ever know that's actually why she said it though).

I know, right?? It totally went over my head, but I was wondering why Boitano? Oh my, I love her even more if that was her motivation!! lol
