I'm not sure what this has to do with anything. The original series had dozens of writers over the years, and so far the new series only has a handful. Of course stand up comics mostly write their own material, but tv shows need a lot more than that.

And since when is someone supposed to stay poor to be able to write about or portray the working class? That makes no sense to me.

When the original series started, Roseanne did not want it known that others were getting credit for the concept, perpetuating the illusion that all of the material was based entirely on her own experiences.

Say what now? Jackie isn't gay. But the mom (grandma - Estelle Parson's character) is.

I believe she was “revealed” to be gay in the original series ending where Roseanne claimed it was all made up.
 
That famous last episode that also revealed Becky was actually married to David and Darlene was married to Mark and that Jackie was a lesbian and not their mom who Roseanne decided to make a lesbian and make Jackie straight for a reason I cannot remember. I think the first episode of this reboot revealed it was just part of her book that she wrote when Dan joked about how Roseanne “killed him off”.

Btw, why would Darlene name her son Mark? They didn’t get along and Darlene really made fun of his lack of intelligence as the writers eventually and suddenly made Mark so stupid to the point of uselessness. The only things I could think of were that it was just a meta tribute to the deceased actor or Darlene was actually married to Mark and not David as I don’t think the first episode said the name of Becky’s dead husband.

Right, they didn't say "Mark", just Becky's 'husband died', but I'm guessing they think the audience will assume it was Mark they were referring to (at least I immediately did anyway). That is why I initially thought maybe the actor didn't want to do the show, so they just killed 'Mark' off with no mention of his name. The next day I looked him up and saw that the actor died in 2002, as I didn't know that at the time I was watching. Maybe the 'husband died' will turn out to be a second husband, but I think they are referring to Mark.

Mark and Becky were still together before the 'fantasy season', right? And they didn't really make Mark so dumbly stupid 'until' the fantasy season, or was it earlier? Mark and Becky were struggling as a couple, but I thought they were still married and together at that time in the story (pre-winning the lottery). Mark's picture was on display in the family room if you look close, so that's why I think the 'husband died' is Mark. I'm guessing this is why their son is named Mark .... 9 years ago David and Darlene were still happily married and pregnant with their second child and Mark dies shortly before she gives birth to their son, so David wants to honor his brother and they agree to name their son Mark. But that's just me .... :P

I hope they do an episode to address what happened to Mark, and not just leave it at 'he died'. Because I do think they are referring to Mark. Again ... just what I think. :D
 
Becky and Mark actually were expecting a child in the last episode too until it all revealed to be fake a few minutes later. Now at least we know THAT wasn’t real as Becky doesn’t have a child now...unless this reboot turns out to be not real and is actually Roseanne writing a sequel to her highly successful first book from her macadamia farm in Hawaii and she had to make the characters still be struggling financially to make it relatable to the rest of us while adding subliminal right wing pro-Trump rhetoric in it.

Btw, I remember the real Roseanne being quite anti-Trans. I wonder if she evolved on that or she’s really truly acting and separating the character or Roseanne Connor and Roseanne Barr in a way she hasn’t done before in order to play the part of understanding grandma to Darlene’s son who isn’t trans but adopts gender neutral or non-gendered conforming expression and appearance. Maybe Roseanne is ok with gender fluidity in terms of appearance so long as the individuals stick with the gender in which they were assigned at birth.
 
I'm just kinda assuming that anything that happened, story-line wise, after the moment Jackie ran in screaming "we won the lottery!" is part of the 'it never happened' realm. :lol: That's the only way I can keep the story straight that they are trying to tell of this family 20+ years later. The story got so stupid after that point (winning the lottery) I do know I quit watching and missed several episodes, and didn't watch again until the finale, so I really don't remember much of what happened after Darlene's wedding and the season ending with Dan having the heart attack. So in my mind, that's kinda where the story ended, and it picks up 20 years later ... Dan having obviously surviving the heart attack. :rofl:

I have mixed feelings. I think that the concept of a show depicting Trump supporters and Democrats among family members living under the same roof is a unique plot line in any show these days. I appreciate that the whole band managed to get back together for the reboot.

That said, I thought the political back and forth was clumsily written, and Jackie (Laurie Metcalfe) appeared a lot more hysterical OTT than her character was portrayed the 1st time around. The show is good when it deals w/ the struggles of a working class family in fly-over country.

I have less of a problem w/ Roseanne Connor being portrayed as a Trump voter than Roseanne Barr's opinions on why she voted for Trump. I listened to her on Jimmy Kimmel promoting the show and she didn't make much sense on Trump, but then I remembered a lot of her antics from the past, and she doesn't make much sense period (Barr, not Connor)
 
I honestly don't know if I can continue to watch it considering how this show is making her feel even more empowered to continue posting things I personally can't stomach and to see the lovefest between her and 45 and how they are using each other to increase their visibility. The ratings are in and the show obviously don't need my help (plus I'm not a Nielsen household so it doesn't matter if I watch or not).

they just replayed the episodes on abc. It felt forced and all the political stuff aside, I agree with the earlier poster - it was clumsily written. Only John Goodman and Sarah Gilbert can act. They aren’t going to make this last on political talk, they’re going to have to find a center because they don’t have one yet.
 
I haven't seen it because, in general, I avoid reboots. I would rather preserve my memories of the original (unless the original was really bad and the reboot looks better -- not the case here).

This would be for original material only. "Rebooting" a reality show is really just making format changes of the kind that they do all the time. So if the changes look interesting, I might check it out.

I haven't seen or heard anything to make me change my mind about this one. I'd rather have my memories of the Conner family (minus the last season which I didn't watch all the way through).

Jackie, the liberal, was over the top and hysterical while Roseanne, the Trump supporter was calm and reasonable. Of course. See what they did there?

I only saw it because my in-laws turned on the rerun of it at their house last night. I was not impressed. But I didn't like the show the first time around, either.
 
Jackie started out as a grounded sister who was sort of a mess at times and confused about what she wanted and was sort of throwing her life away because she was put into the little sister role who was single and didn't have too many responsibilities. She was always a bit more sensitive than Roseanne. Then they gradually made her into a cartoon throughout the years. Last week's premiere and the episode afterwards was very late seasons Jackie but even more so.

This goes into my point earlier about being afraid that Laurie Metcalf's skills were being wasted on this show. Someone wrote earlier that the only people who could act on the show based on last week's premiere was John Goodman and Sara Gilbert, which is a huge shame because this show has Metcalf and she is capable of absolutely amazing performances (comedic and dramatic), and the sad part is that the observation is probably not an incorrect one if someone only knew of the actors from what those episodes showed.
 
We'll have to see how the ratings are tonight. It's on before The Middle, which is in its last season, so fans might be watching both. I record The Middle so I don't have to watch whatever is on during the rest of the hour already. There's nothing else good on Tuesday nights though. But with all the hype and pro-trump talk and her conspiracy theories about child trafficking, some of the people who tuned in just to see what it was like (how the ratings for the second half hour were higher than the first is weird) may tune back out.

A similar thing happened on Friends, where Monica started out as a sane, organized, appealing adult person, and then the writers had her morph into a scatterbrained neurotic. It was not pleasant to watch, and it is not pleasant to watch Jackie. It is not funny but they are playing it for laughs. There was a "joke" made about mental illness which I believe referred to the grandmother, but maybe they were referring to Jackie.

I can't believe anyone who watched the same show I did thought it was in support of Trump. The digs were pretty much the reasons I believe some people voted for Trump. Roseanne Conner said "Jackie he promised jobs (Darlene can't find a job), he promised health care (they only bought half their meds and are splitting them because of the cost), he promised he promised he promised.......". And on the show guess what .... none of that happened nor did it in real life. That's the reality a "Roseanne Conner" type person who voted for him for those reasons is probably seeing now.

Hysterical episode tonight!! :rofl::rofl: (and not one political mention ... go figure since that's not what the show is even though some people seem to think it is). :blah: I can relate to the chair lift!! After my dad died my mom moved into my house and we put in a chair lift. It just goes straight up, not curved. But that's totally what its like riding it. :rofl: I have probably used it more than my mom did.
 
No direct politics, but some social commentary last night: when Roseanne and Dan wake up on the couch, they note that they slept from Wheel to Kimmel, and missed a bunch of shows about black and Asian families. Roseanne says, "they're just like us, now you're caught up."

I agree with both your posts @BaileyCatts some people are up in arms over the Trump (they dont even say his name) stuff... and it was only for 1 episode... Just like Will & Grace...first episode, they address it and then thats it. And its only 1 Trump supporter..versus an entire family who aren't.

It was a funny-ish episode...I mean as far as regular broadcast programming goes it was funny....

Man..that granddaughter.... wow.... how awful the would be if it were only people like her.

My DVR seems to have cut off.... at the funniest moment when Roseanne gets in the shower with the granddaughter...
 
^^ On the DVR, I just automatically record to start 1 minute earlier and 1 minute later on all my shows now because of that happening to me. Its like the DVR box and the broadcast times are not synched or something. So just to be safe, its 1 minute longer on everything. Well except "Live" things like skating since you never know what happens with "Live". :P

Shower scene was hysterical. :rofl: If you saw Roseanne get in and Harris run out, you were pretty much right at the end.

And gawd Harris is awful! Although its hard to imagine the Darlene I remember being in the 'she's my friend and my equal' camp. That was a stretch for me, but I get what they were trying to do with the story.

I hope they do get around to addressing what happened to Becky's 'husband who died'. Was it Mark? How did he die? Although I know they are limited by 30 minute episodes, and only filming 9 from the start, since they are trying to address issues families face today, and since Glenn Quinn died of a drug overdose, having Mark die from drug addition would be relevant to issues families are facing today.
