Dancing With the Stars - Season 30

So thoughts on the dancing?
  • Jojo and Jenna were fantastic. It's amazing how a costume can make a performance so creepy.
  • Iman and Daniella were great, but I think that's mainly because she's so damn fantastic at lifts. Case and point - the only other dance where they scored really well was the Argentine Tango, which also had a lot of lifts
  • I love that Jimmie seems to be getting a lot out of the show. Though I don't know how he's doing it with a 1 week old baby in a different city
  • I was underwhelmed with Melora this week, but damn do her parents look fantastic for their ages!
  • I was underwhelmed again with Suni. I thought the first bit of her dance was good, but then she got boring part way through
  • I just can't get into Cody and Cheryl. Also, dedicating the dance where you play a serial killer to your partner?
  • I didn't find Val and Olivia to be too memorable this week
  • I liked Kenya, though I don't think Brandon is the best pro...
  • Amanda's Argentine Tango was good, but to me something was missing

Didn't love the music. Just put on a costume and dance to whatever song you want and say it's inspired by? I mean, for the American Psycho one, they should have danced to Huey Lewis' 'Hip to be Square'!

With Kenya in the bottom so many times, I guess they couldn't justify keeping her around anymore, however I enjoyed her dances a lot more than Suni's, so I would have chosen her.

Also, I didn't love Derek's dance. I actually found he just stood there and Hayley danced around him, rather than him being the star of the dance.

Cody should have been given the same respect as Jojo.
There have been tons of gay men on this show, both as celebs and as partners. Johnny Weir danced with Britt, remember? The point is NOT that Cody is gay, the point is that Jojo and Jenna are in a same-sex pairing.

ETA: Johnny danced with Britt; Adam Rippon danced with Jenna.

I remember there being terf-ish comments back when Chaz Bono was on, saying that as he was born a female, he should be dancing with a male partner (he was paired with Lacey Schwimmer)

I think the gender of the partner should be up to personal preference, not sexual orientation.

JoJo's number was fantastic! If they got less than 40, I would have thrown something at the TV! Kenya just didn't have the popularity to stick around, but I really enjoyed watching her dance. Iman surprised me, best performance ever!! I think next week we'll see a surprise couple go home like Olivia.

There have been tons of gay men on this show, both as celebs and as partners. Johnny Weir danced with Britt, remember?

Historically, dance competitions have been one male partner with one female partner. This is thanks to homophobia. The latin dances have a sexy tone to them, historically a HETEROSEXUAL sexy tone to them. Other types of dance had to do with courting, again HETEROSEXUAL courting. There was no place for anyone other than heterosexuals. Dancing With The Stars has continued the homophobic history of dance. So yes, Johnny Weir and other LGBTQ people were dis-allowed the opportunity to vote for the partner of the gender that would reflect their reality in the same way that heterosexual competitors were given that freedom.

The point is NOT that Cody is gay, the point is that Jojo and Jenna are in a same-sex pairing.

THE point? How brazen of you to tell everyone what the point of the discussion is!

I see the point at hand to be quite differently than you, though:

My point is do the producers think America can (FINALLY) stomach two women dancing together...while two men together is still too yucky?

Cody should have been given the same respect as Jojo.

Oh, I understand now. By "respect" you mean the opportunity to dance with a same-sex partner. Got it.

Disallowed implies they asked and were turned down though.

We know Cody didn't ask. We don't know what would have happened if he had asked. We don't know if anyone else asked and was turned down (though I doubt it -- could you imagine Weir keeping quiet about such a thing if it had happened?)

I have to say that I'm not surprised Cody didn't ask as he seems rather conventional to me. JoJo Siwa is not conventional in any sense of the word and her asking is right on-brand for her. They are featuring Cody's partner in all the fluff footage so they are clearly okay with him being gay and they are okay with having other out gay contestants like Weir who also got to wear all sorts of crazy outfits that emphasized his feminine side. Are they not okay with having two males dance together? I'd sure like to see someone ask them outright and see what they say!

I do think the producers missed an opportunity to have JoJo & Jenna and Cody & (male partner) but we don't know how this came to be.

We don't know if they simply didn't think of such a thing (which I would consider unconscious bias), if they thought of it but no male dancers wanted to do it (homophobia on their part), or they thought of it and decided America (or more accurately their sponsors) would freak out (homophobia on their part). You are jumping to the conclusion it's the later but it very well could be that no male pros were willing to do it. This is why I'd love to have someone ask them and see if they squirm and hedge or have a reasonable explanation.

In ballroom dancing, there are always more girls than guys and girls dance together all the time, btw. So I'm not surprised they found a pro who was okay with dancing with JoJo. Plus she's fun!

@MacMadame, it's not like there's no gay pros on that show so if asked I'll bet they could have found one who was willing. You said Cody didn't ask, I doubt Johnnie did either. It's well known he loves being around women. He has stated many times that Tara (not Lipenski, the other one) is his best friend. And he & Lipenski seem to have that giggly girlfriend relationship.

I don't think it's being homophobic to say I wasn't in favor of same-sex partners on DWTS. I just didn't think they could pull it off. Boy, was I wrong. Jenna & Jojo are my favorite pair this year since the 1st dance. Now I think Johnnie Weir could have pulled it off too with the right partner.

So it seems that DWTS fans are not loving all the theme weeks, and I have to say I kind of agree. It was nice when it was once in a while, but as commented in the article, too many gimmicky themes seems to take away from the actual ballroom/latin styles instead forcing them to try to fit dance styles to match the theme.
Though I did like way back in the olden days when they tried a classical music night with an orchestra performing the music. But I can also see why that might not have been as popular with the average viewer.

Thinking of more songs for the upcoming Fashion night, I hope someone shakes their little tush on the catwalk to "I'm Too Sexy". I can see Val wanting it to be him, though...

Regarding same sex couples, I think the first time they do 2 men, it will be 2 conventionally attractive, younger males. I also think it will be with a star who is not (for lack of better phrasing) 'flamboyant'.
I actually think that if they feel it's necessary to do so, they can 'ease' people into it by bringing back the trio dances that they used to do, which ended up having 2 partners of the same gender dancing together.

I haven't noticed it mentioned (it's possible I missed it), but there is currently a same sex male pairing on Strictly Come Dancing in the UK (both celebrity and pro are gay). I haven't looked to see what public reaction is as I only found out from seeing Adam Peaty on Youtube and then checking out who the other contestants were.

I agree as well. Grease night was fun. But I’m over it.

Every year they have (at minimum) Disney night and Halloween night. I'm sick of those two, but that's more than enough. When they had a spring season it wasn't so bad because we didn't have Halloween night, but I mean unless they start using Disney songs they've never used before, it's incredibly repetitive. Like do they HAVE TO use the Pirates of the Caribbean music every year?

Yes, because Disney owns the film and the theme park attraction ;)

If Disney night, they should at least do songs from the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks! Or do the more 'obscure' songs. Hell, I don't even recall them doing the Sleeping Beauty waltz for any of the seasons. Or the Nutcracker Suite, which is used in Fantasia. As problematic as Song of the South is, Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah won the Oscar for best song. Instead of the same ballad from Cinderella, why not use 'The Work Song' or 'Bibbidi Bobbidy Boo'. 'Cruella De Vil' is a fantastic song. Or any of the Elvis songs used in Lilo and Stitch. Any of the songs from Enchanted or Tangled. Instead we get the same things all the time. And I always feel bad for the person who has to dance to the movie that has not yet been released (I think it was Suni this year)

@screech IMO the music from the "classic" Disney cartoons/features is so much better than the recent scores. And unless I've missed it being used already, "Shiny" from Moana would be perfect for such a glittery competition :)

I really enjoyed the villains night but I’m not a Disney or horror movies fan so I was quite lost last night.

I always liked the trio dances, I thought it helped the pros who were choreography challenged or didn’t enjoy working with their partners.

So on JoJo's dance, I have not seen the movie that clown is from. Does 'Anything Goes' have anything at all to do with that movie? Like is that song in the movie? Cause it really made no sense to me the connection between the song and the costumes.

Cody said on the show recently that after being partnered with Cheryl, he learned that Val was open to dancing with a male partner.

My guess is that the majority of the male pros would be fine dancing with a male partner.
So now they just have to do it!

It makes me roll my eyes so hard that this article informing on the dances for Queen week makes sure to mention that the intro song ("I Want It All") will include Tyra's walk out.

Learning a whole new dance is a lot of work for 1 point. The groupings are interesting. I wonder what they are based on.

I'm nervous about how the terrible singers will butcher the vocals.

Yeah, it's odd. Groups are usually done based on average scores. But JoJo (34.6), Amanda (33.9), and Melora (32.4) have the highest averages (Olivia is 0.1 behind Melora in average)
Of the remaining dancers, the "Jive" group are all at the bottom of the averages list (Cody with 28.3, Iman with 28.9, and Miz with 30) so it makes sense for them to be paired against each other. But then why not do a mid range and highest group?

It made me wonder if they were being paired by audience voting but Olivia was in the bottom two so that probably isn't it.
