Coronation of King Charles III

I am told by my cousin in England that the King specifically said "no tiaras".

For anyone who missed the actual service the Royal Family Channel on YouTube has the stream that was live at the time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8HVnAXZI1I It is 2 & 3/4 hr in total but you can "search & view".
The Royal Family website has a full guide to the day's events: https://www.royal.uk/coronation-guide

So Kate got herself and her daughter something as close to a tiara as humanly possible without actually being one? That's a level of malicious compliance I would not have expected from her. :D :respec: (I heard that she wore Diana's earrings, too.)
Well, Sophie and The Duchess Gloucester were wearing floral headpieces too so I suspect that was the dress code for the royal ladies wearing robes.

If Charles's dictum was "Nobody wear tiaras, wear floral headpieces instead," that's a level of hairsplitting I would not have expected from him.

That's exactly what I was thinking! Kate and Charlotte's headpieces are about as close to tiaras as you can get without the diamonds or other precious gems. There are some lovely laurel wreath/floral tiaras owned by other royal families and when Kate first appeared, I thought she'd unearthed some previously unknown similar tiara from the BRF's vault. I kind of had the feeling that Kate and William thought to themselves "so, no tiaras, you say... okay then... just you wait ('enry 'iggins)!"

If that were the case then I would have expected Princess Alexandra to also have worn a floral headpiece, which she did not.

I was wondering if you don't wear a tiara with your robes/mantles. The only woman I can find wearing a tiara and a robe/mantle is the late Queen who may very well have had a different "dress code" as Monarch on robe wearing occaisions.

I have no doubt everything worn was approved and the person who made those pieces actually started a grant for her business from the Princes Trust.

I thought the pieces were lovely and showed Kates status as Princess of wales and Charlottes status as the Heirs daughter without distracting from the Queen.

Also a nod to Prince Phillip being a member of the Greek royal family

Was it seen as a slight that Harry was seated in the 3rd row or is that normal?

It's not normal, but neither is the second son of the monarch being a non-working royal who lives abroad. Given that he quit the "firm," third-row wasn't perceived as a particular slight. He was seated behind the working royals.

Harry left immediately after the Coronation to go back to California. He went from Westminster Abbey to Heathrow and was on a 3:45 pm commercial flight. He was in the UK for about 36 hours total.

As someone who had an extremely tumultuous relationship with DH family, I must say I'm impressed that Harry could honor his father AND be a supportive husband. But the rest of the royal brothers war belong in the other threads.

Harry might have hurt feelings over the seating, bit I bet he was also somewhat relieved to have a solution that must have been acceptable to all

I'm very happy for Charles who has literally waited 74 years to start the job he was born to and he and Camilla seem very happy together. It's hard to imagine living your entire life under a microscope for the entire world to see and talk about. I wish him and the UK well during his reign.

I honestly think it was for the best because could you imagine the media with every interaction between him and William this way the focus was on the King and Queen

Watching the service today, it struck me that George will likely see 3 Coronations. Charles, William and his own. Charlotte and Louis might see 4.

When I read that I started Googling "How old is ..." and Google instantly autofilled with "King Charles." Apparently a lot of people have been Googling that.

(He's 74, btw.)

Yes I was laughing when the media was interviewing younger people in the street about why they wanted to come out and view in the rain and they were saying “It’s a once in a lifetime event.”

I was thinking “How long do you think he’s going to live? You’ll probably see another one or maybe even two. “

I've been thinking that I will likely see another one but will be 20 some odd years older.

Kate’s headpiece was a showstopper.

According to Vanity Fair it’s a ‘headpiece by Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen that featured silver bullion, crystal and silver threadwork three-dimensional leaf embroidery’.

Just as impactful as a tiara but probably even better to wear as it would be light, soft and easy to incorporate into a hair style.

I expect this style will probably trickle down into regular stores in the next year or so.

Making Charles a descendant of the Russian Romanovs! ??
Charles isn't a descendant of the Romanovs. Like many European royals Prince Philip was a descendant of Queen Victoria (a great great grandson) and his great-aunt Alexandra, who was Queen Victoria's grand-daughter, had had the misfortune of marrying the Tsar Nicolai II. :scream:

The Greek royal family was a scion of the Danish royal family. There was definitely inter-marriage with the other European royal families though, so it's all a bit of a mix (much like the British Royal Family...).

Yeah and I think affordable for everyday folks I loved that look on Charlotte and can totally see it on little flower girls
