Coronation of King Charles III

Yes I was laughing when the media was interviewing younger people in the street about why they wanted to come out and view in the rain and they were saying “It’s a once in a lifetime event.”

I was thinking “How long do you think he’s going to live? You’ll probably see another one or maybe even two. “
I dunno about that. Given the longevity of his parents/grandmother, Charles could reign for 20 years easily!

Charles isn't a descendant of the Romanovs. Like many European royals Prince Philip was a descendant of Queen Victoria (a great great grandson) and his great-aunt Alexandra, who was Queen Victoria's grand-daughter, had had the misfortune of marrying the Tsar Nicolai II. :scream:
Yes, he is a direct descendant of Tsar Nicholas I. King George of Greece's wife was a Russian Grand Duchess named Olga, and she was the daughter of one of Nicholas I's sons.

Why didn’t the King want anyone wearing tiaras?
I assume that given the economic woes, having women wear their tiaras would have seemed tone deaf, although Kate had a headpiece designed to be close to one, so I’m not sure that was helpful. At Elizabeth’s coronation, it was even worse - the nobles all wore their own crowns!

Wow! If you take Elizabeth and the clergy out of that picture it looks kind of like a Moose Lodge meeting. That is a lot of big headgear!

I would have felt so silly wearing those robes. It looks like the things I was playing dress-up with as a kid.

I was surprised at the headpiece that Charlotte wore given how close it came to looking like a tiara and that royals only start wearing tiaras at the age of 18. But her age, I would have adored it. Kate's piece looked incredibly heavy (and far too massive for my taste. I prefer the more delicate headpieces and tiaras).

I thought William looked a lot like Edward in the pictures that I've seen. It's probably because they both have a similar head shape and thinning hair.

Is it predetermined who stands where on the balcony? I thought it was interesting that Edward and Sophie stood with Kate and William and their family while Andrew was at the other hand but maybe it wasn't their choice.
Why wasn't Anne on the balcony?

I was kind of looking forward to that in that in the coronation, but didn't see a shot of the hereditary Duke's during the actual crowning. It's the only time that they are allowed to wear their coronets is immediately after the sovereign is crowned.

Andrew wasn’t on the balcony  Did you mean someone else? He isn’t a working royal anymore and it was always made clear he wouldn’t be there.

Watched it. Wanted to see all the bling, gold coaches, robes and historic touches. This is history and tradition and I enjoyed it. This is what the UK does best, so go do it.

Charles and Camilla are the oldest to be crowned and they looked it. They looked as nice as they could, but you could see it was a struggle for an almost 76 year old woman. But, they looked happy together, esp him. I still have trouble seeing her as Queen (no, I don't think it's for Diana), but I definitely see her as Charles' wife... it's hard to explain my feelings. Either way, its done, they looked so happy together and it was a great day.

The Wales children are lovely, Charlotte is arresting and poised for her age and Louis did well for a just turned 5 year old. I was getting tired toward the end with all the singing, I would have wanted a 30 minute break too.

I was surprised to see so many celebs, I would have preferred the 24 hereditary dukes in their finery, but I guess this is the new trend for royal events.

Because spending £100 million on a coronation in the midst of a cost of living crisis isn’t tone deaf at all.

I'm a republican at heart but support the coronation festivities. The UK needs more and better visibility on the world stage. The Royal Family and related history are a huge tourism draw, and one that was always going to be at risk following QE2's passing. If anything, I think the coronation festivities were a bit subdued and could have been bigger / grander. £100 million is not much in the grand scheme of things - it's like £1.50 per person living in the UK. To me, this is a solid investment that will pay for itself - kinda like American Super Bowl advertising, which people fume over but which tends to have solid ROI.

It's a shame about the rain, which was terrible (worse than it looked on TV). The grocery stores around Hyde Park were throwing away so much food. I guess they ordered figuring people were going come in and buy sandwiches, scones, etc. to take the large viewing area or have a picnic.

YAY!!!! Our local PBS station will live-telecast the Coronation Concert beginning at 3pm eastern time today! Same time zone for us in the Caribbean. That’s why I love & donate to PBS! So few bits of happiness in life today but PBS comes through. Royal Ballet will be included. Hugh Boneville to host.

I watched via Fox News yesterday…Piers Morgan was spot-on with his catty Harry/Meghan (and Andrew) comments. Nothing but JOY & happiness in their interviews of crowd goers, incl many US citizens. 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 Long Live TRADITION - Kings & Queens, Tiaras or not!

Interesting that a UK conservative politician, Penny Mordaunt, was chosen to play a large role in the investiture…almost a star of the show in her teal outfit, including a Russian-style “kokoshnik”-style hat.

I’m with Anderson Cooper who said there was no joy there. The POC were smart to find other things to do.
I saw an interview with a Jamaican lady who was there with her family. The felt the need to move multiple times as it took them a while to find a camp out spot where they felt welcome. At several prime spots, they were told that there was no room for them.

She's Lord President of the Privy Council whose Coronation day job is to hold the 8lb Sword of State.

William looked very, very emotional when robing his father. And by "emotional," I mean "sad." DD speculates he was thinking about Diana. He misses his mum.

The balcony was working royals only, the king’s siblings (Edward and Anne, Andrew wasn’t there) stood on one side with their spouses (and Edward’s children, who are still teenagers) and William and Kate and their kids. The other side was the working royals left from QEII’s generation, her cousins the Duke of Gloucester (and his wife), the Duke of Kent, and Princess Alexandra. The pages who carried the robes and Camilla’s two companions of honour or whatever they were called were also there. Sometimes it feels like they all pour out on the balcony and are jockeying for position, but this was more organized.

I think it’s a bit silly to draw the line at tiaras as an optics thing when they’re wearing gowns and robes and spending millions of pounds. I mean, theoretically the tiaras are already owned by them, so it’s more sustainable to use them than to have new headpieces and hats made! But if Anne had already decided to wear her uniform, and most of the nobility (non royal dukes, etc) weren’t even invited (which they have been complaining about for weeks!) it would only have been Kate and Sophie and maybe the Duchess of Gloucester. Other members of the family were in day dresses with hats. I guess it made sense to cut the tiaras. But they would have been so pretty!

They all looked enormously sad the whole time. Charles looked like it was the worst day of his life. I think just crushed under the enormity of the moment and its significance, and thinking of those not there (his parents for Charles, Diana for William), and it’s a very solemn service, no room for celebration or joy. They looked very relieved and happy afterwards on the balcony!

I kept looking for my super fave, Michael of Kent…who looks a lot like his cousin, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia.

I think it’s sad for Charles because of his mother dying. It’s sad for William and George because they know that they will be doing this too once their own fathers have died.

I’m sure there is sadness for Diana but my guess is that is the primary thing on their minds. They will inherit the crown but only once their beloved parent dies :(

I went looking for it, too! It is also on my local PBS station, (LPB) KLTS channel 24. 2p.m. central. It certainly has changed through the years. I remember when we only had three local stations/channels which were ABC channel 3, NBC channel 6 and CBS channel 12. There was no cable tv, satellite tv or internet (World Wide Web). That was during the 50's to late 60's when there was only black & white TV. We had to switch to UHF and use rabbit ears in order to get LPB, channel 24. And it didn't always come in very clear using the rabbit ears. Sometimes LPB would come in clear when Mr. Rogers came on!

Good Gosh! What if that scenario was now, and we all had to use rabbit ears to get the LPB (PBS) channel! What a total nightmare this would have been in order to watch the Coronation! Technology certainly has come a long way and I thank God for it!!
