Commonwealth Games 2018 - Welcome to the Gold Coast

very disappointed with Canadian coverage - opening & closing ceremonies live, a couple of prepackaged hours both Saturdays, and not even a link anywhere to schedules and results, no sports news items - I can never remember a more ignored international games event. Perhaps a victim of timing? Too many pro sports (particularly hockey) heading into playoffs? Too close to the wall to wall Olympic coverage? Not traditionally a summer sports time of year and we seem to be stuck in a never-ending winter with way below normal temps and still a lot of snow (can't remember the last time we had snow pack in April - particularly in a year where we didn't even get much snow.
The event website is very good for following the results:

Live coverage is available on the new online network DAZN. You can sign up get a free month, and then cancel if you just want to watch the Commonwealth Games. The video replay isn't the best but it's not too bad.

Watching rhythmic gymnastics. They're doing the ribbon now. You know how sometimes we say the ice is cursed? Well, I think I've found the variant. Maybe the humidity is making everyone's palms sweaty, because the ribbon has hit the deck in every routine so far. And then they all look so disappointed. :yikes:

To be fair, I don't recall prior Commonwealth Games getting much coverage in Canada - I don't think Glasgow 2014 had anything beyond a weekend highlight package either (and that was held in July/August, which would be free of most conflicts with pro sports).

For the 2018 Commonwealth Games, CBC Sports has teamed up with subscription/streaming service DAZN ("Da Zone") for this week's coverage from the Gold Coast.

This happened the last time we had the Commonwealth Games too. Apparently immigration lawyers on the Gold Coast are reporting that upwards of 40 athletes and officials have made inquiries about staying in Australia.

Also meanwhile, two Indian athletes have been kicked out for violating the "no needles in the Athletes' Village" rule. This comes after the Indian boxing team's doctor received a formal warning prior to the games even starting for having needles outside the prescribed areas in the village. How dumb can you be?

Horrible scenes in the marathon this morning. Scotland's Callum Hawkins was leading by more than two minutes with just two kilometres to go when he collapsed. He was really distressed before this happened, you could see it going to happen. He couldn't get back up. Australia's Michael Shelly made it across the line to win.

Lots of debate going on about how slowly the medics got to Hawkins, about the spectators/volunteers just kind of standing around doing nothing to help, about the heat and the conditions (even though they started the marathon at 7:20am local time), and one Australian media outlet even shit-stirring by shaming Shelly for not stopping to help (even though it was obvious to anyone with eyes that Shelly himself was on the verge of collapse.)

Team Scotland has reported that Hawkins is being monitored in hospital but is not in a serious condition.

What was even worse than the medics taking so long to arrive were the people filming and taking photos of Hawkins.

I agree it was horrible. Some people have no shame. :angryfire

According to Team Scotland Callum is sitting up and resting in hospital. Hope to see him back on the marathon route soon.

Hi Guy! (You wuzrobbed of Eurovision.)

Basically a giant dance party? I'm down with this.

A traditional Farewell from Country, from the future leaders of the local Indigenous community.

Ugh, boring speech time. I'll come back when cool stuff starts happening again.

Man I wonder how long boring speech time goes...

At least I'm streaming it, so I've got Midsomer Murders to watch on the TV ;)

Oh wait, there's actually an award about to be handed out. It sounds like an MVP/Miss Congeniality type award.

David Liti from New Zealand, a walking man mountain who won gold in weightlifting. Well done, buddy!
