*** Cirque du Soleil 'Crystal' lands professional ice dancer in lead role :
https://www.argusleader.com/story/e...ancer-lands-lead-role-sioux-falls/1284703002/
Illinois native Madeline Stammen, 24, began her competitive career at the age of 8. She excelled at ice dancing and freestyle skating at a highly competitive level until she was 18 years old.

After competition, Stammen was hired for her first professional show on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines performing in shows on the ship’s ice rinks.

In 2016, while taking a six-month sabbatical from skating, Stammen auditioned for Cirque du Soleil: "Crystal" and landed the role of The Reflection, the alter ego of the titular character Crystal. She has since been alternating roles of The Reflection as well as main character Crystal. You can see her perform on Sept. 20-23 when the show comes to the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

Local California article that focuses on Zabato Bebe: https://www.recordnet.com/entertain...day-features-ice-skating-alongside-acrobatics
Zabato Bebe, who grew up in Vienna [Austria], opted for figure skating.
“I always loved to climb trees, run around and ice skating,” Bebe said. “I tried everything and my mom let me do whatever I wanted. Skating was a natural thing to do. It combined sport and art. My mom’s a teacher, an art history teacher, and my dad teaches African dance, and figure skating blends sports form and art from on ice. It felt natural.”
Bebe now is taking figure skating to another level as part of Cirque du Soleil Crystal, which comes to Stockton Arena from Wednesday through April 7. The show is Cirque du Soleil’s first experience on ice and features synchronized, freestyle and extreme skating alongside circus disciplines such as swinging trapeze, aerial straps and hand-to hand.
“Cirque du Soleil is a natural progression,” Bebe said.
He started skating at 6, competed in Vienna and gave up competitive skating at 18 to pursue professional performing. He never landed with the big tours, though.
“I was more interested in me shows, projects nobody else does, a once-in-a-lifetime experience” Bebe said. “Little things popped up here and there that don’t exist anymore. They were groundbreaking at the time.
“Cirque du Soleil is trying to do something different, outside the box.”

Can anyone who has seen the show say whether it's worth the money? Is there's any real skating? The reason I am asking is that the current du Soleil show, Avatar, is more about videoprojecting than circus

Posted in the U.S. Pairs thread this past Wednesday:
Erika Choi Smith announced on Facebook that she & AJ Reiss are moving to Montreal to join Cirque du Soleil.

Posted in the U.S. Dance thread last month:
Oh, just saw Crystal this past weekend, and Cirque is right in their [Manta/Johnson's] wheelhouse.
Any highlights/impressions you'd like to share, @kwanfan1818?

It's a unique show to the US audience. I haven't seen anything like it. It's skating, acrobatics and great choreography combined in one. If you're interested just in skating, you might be disappointed b/c the jumps are not as difficult as SOI. But it is not as cheesy as SOI. It's pretty amazing. I would recommend it.

It's a story about a girl who doesn't fit in with her family: dystopian Dickens meets Mad Men. All of the skating is in service of the story, with the acrobats and aerialists providing the dream/nightmare and fantastical elements.

Also, Shawn Sawyer was in it and was fabulous.

There is not only aerial work, but acrobats performed where some of the "layer" of people on ice were wearing skates and some were wearing shoes, I assume with grips. I was actually more nervous when someone was tossed in the air and caught by someone wearing shoes than skates, because I assume they'd want a little give and slide so that the momentum didn't torque their joints because their feet were planted, but not so much to be unstable.

It wasn't at all like Stars on Ice, with its starts and stops, even when it (SOI) was thematically more solid: there was constant movement and smooth transitions between scenes, where it felt like there was one long series of scenes and always lots of choices to focus on. Lots of shifting perspectives is classic Cirque, and so is the emphasis on storytelling and atmosphere.

Axel will be in Huntsville, Alabama for three nights this fall. That is an easy 2 hour drive for me. Guess what.... it’s the same weekend I will be in Vegas for Skate America:(

Soyoun Park's positive message yesterday about traveling to Canada (Montreal) to start her new adventure with the AXEL tour: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bylz_58pWqa/

Replying to @aftershocks' question in the U.S. Pairs thread here:
I'm wondering whether the above means Ash and Tim appeared with the Cirque cast or will be making an appearance with the cast of Cirque at Comerica? Or, did they simply spend a day with the Cirque cast learning what they do and how they put on these shows?
The latter. I came across this local Texas press release (CRYSTAL is in Frisco, TX through Sunday) with details about Cain/LeDuc's visit in April: https://planomagazine.com/plano-events/events/cirque-du-soleil-crystal/
Excerpt:
Cain and LeDuc visited the CRYSTAL team while they were in Omaha, Nebraska performing at the CHI Health Center Omaha Convention Center and Arena in April. The duo spent the day with the CRYSTAL cast learning what it takes to be a part of Cirque du Soleil. From costumes to makeup to warming up on the ice, Cain and LeDuc experienced a full day of a Cirque du Soleil performer’s routine. In addition, the figure skaters shared skills that they have learned through competition with the Cirque du Soleil team.
Next up is Philadelphia (June 20-23 at the Wells Fargo Center) and here are some local articles:
Shawn Sawyer is featured in this one: https://www.inquirer.com/arts/cirqu...hia-shawn-sawyer-fabrice-lemire-20190612.html

If anyone is interested in seeing Crystal when it hits Philadelphia June 20-23, you can snag a discounted ticket here (and support a local skating club):

Thanks for the follow-up @Sylvia. After taking a good look at the video, I saw how Cain/Le Duc went through the day with members of the Cirque show. They learned different types of lifts, with unique entrances and exits, along with sharing some skating moves of their own. They also donned special make-up and took part in Cirque's pre-show later that evening. It looked like they had a lot of fun.

It is a great show. Regarding the cost, I found tickets MUCH cheaper at services like stubhub and goodseats, etc. The ticket I bought from Goodseats for $64 would have cost $103 if I had bought it directly from the Wells Fargo box office.

Saw the show in Philly last night with visiting family. It is wonderful - a beautiful blend of Cirque and skating. This was about our 15th Cirque, and definitely one of the best ones.

Our performance did have an odd glitch - they stopped it fairly early in the first act and asked us to stay seated. There were no signs of anyone having been hurt, but the woman next to me noticed a harness change out for the aerialist who performed; likely a technical issue and a safety change. It didn’t hurt the performance at all.

One thing: this is not a skating competition or SOI/COI, you will see jumps and slick skating moves, but that’s not the point of the show. Our BIL told us afterward that there were a couple of teenage girls who were skaters seated behind him who were apparently criticizing the skating and being snarky during intermission (and a bit during the show). My first thought was, “Sure, Miss Pre-juvenile MITF, go out there and show them how it’s done.”:p Basically, if you want Olympic level skating, skip it. If you want a truly breathtaking and entertaining show that includes beautiful skating, Crystal is for you.

There are two more shows in Philly today, 1:30 and 5:00. We had discount tickets through our skating club; you can find discounts pretty easily online or use the one suggested earlier through PSCHS.

Cirque du Soleil filed for bankruptcy but plans to reorganize.

Some 3,480 employees that were furloughed in March due to the coronavirus pandemic — at which time the entertainment company cancelled its 44 shows and saw its revenue stream halted — have been laid off, although Lamarre hopes to rehire the vast majority. Two funds totalling US$20 million have been established to provide additional relief to impacted employees and independent contractors.

The ice shows are probably more expensive to stage because of the touring. If Cirque is in financial trouble, my guess is they would try to start stabilizing revenues by reopening the stage shows that stay in one place (like the Vegas shows) and go from there.
