So maybe it is pretty common for those who do online dating, but not very common in other day-to-day life.
I hate to break it to you, but you have a very naive view of the way the world works.

It isn't just "online dating."

An Australian study reportedly found that "sexting is ‘highly prevalent’ in young adults (48.56% for sending and 56.01% for receiving ‘image-based sexts’), as well as adolescents (11.96% for sending versus 1.85% for receiving)."

And then there's my brother, about whom you can read a bit here. The app in question promotes itself as enabling you "to connect with people no matter where you are" but is apparently a hunting ground for sexual predators.

How many of you know someone who has sent or received pictures of a random person's penis?
You just have to go on any dating site. But I would have thought that with the way media is this day and the #metoo movement it is common knowledge that it is an issue. But also if you think that men can't help themselves and it is accepted behaviour, then you are probably not going to be aware of the severity of the problem because you just don't see it as a problem.

ETA - as a woman in my 50s I have also received d*ck picks. It is not just those under 30 that get them. One of the reasons why I cannot be bothered with online dating sites.

After reading the Christine Brennan article now several times certain words really jump out to me. "Implored them to stay quiet, she was at fault, men have their needs, no one would believe her, shamed on social media especially in France, never skate again". This is absolutely deplorable if true.

To be fair to AxelAnnie, I have been unaware that that this is supposed to be a common thing. No one has ever sent that to me, and none of my friends ever mentioned having that sent to them... I guess it depends a lot who your friends and acquaintances are. I can’t imagine that a complete stranger would send you that, because how would the stranger get your email address...

I have my drag profile on Twitter and Facebook (though I never use FB anymore), and let me tell you the things people send to you unsolicited are . They don't need your email address or your phone number, they just DM you. Now obviously many people can make those "private" but I doubt most teenagers think of these things. (And in my case, it is used for publicity purposes where people can message me with questions about making show bookings or make-up consultations, etc. so making DMs private could easily result in lost money).

And I cannot speak for where you live, but in my area we've had many big blow-ups recently with junior high and high school students getting caught up in "revenge porn" scandals, where teens who've been dating sent each other explicit photos, they break up, and then suddenly the whole school is getting the photos sent around.

But you are putting together sexting and sexual grooming. You are prooving that sexual grooming is pretty frequent by linking a statistic that sexting is frequent. There is a difference between those two, you know. Sexting includes what people who are in relationship, i.e. two adults or adolescents engaging in consensual sexual exchange over text messages. It doesn’t mean that all of that is grooming. In fact, I think out of that, grooming is the minority.

I would encourage you to do a bit of research on your own rather than depending on other people to feed you with information.
That Australian study indicated that about half of all young people send sexts. Do you really imagine that they are all engaged in "grooming"?

I am divorced and a few of my friends are divorced and/or single. We are in our 40’s. Dick pics are very common. Dating is weird in your 40”s though. 40 year olds guys want the 30 year olds. And guys in their late 20’s early 30’s like meeting cougars. And they like sending Dick pics. 🙄

Oh lord, I must live under a rock. I guess between two kids, a demanding job, and a packed workout schedule I am not "with the times".... I also had no idea this was something common.

Whoa, whoa. NOBODY was responsible for Coughlin choosing a cowardly route other than the coward himself. Trying to be all "well we shouldn't be talking about this in case he does what Coughlin did" is gross and exactly on the same level as Dalilah and his family claiming the victims were responsible for his death.

It's Coughlin's fault that investigation wasn't completed, and no-one else's. He chose to end the investigation in the worst way possible, in the way that would inflict the most trauma on everyone.

USA Today and Christine Brennan aren't going to risk a lawsuit by saying "we have seen the messages" when they haven't. SafeSport are investigating and I'm sure Cipres will have a chance to present whatever feeble defense he can come up with.

I knew dick pics were a thing but have never received any. My online dating years were 2008-2011, apparently before the trend started. :scream:

What people do you know that would send you d*ck pics?

Well, this is probably a generational gap. I have never been to a dating site, and outside of a short stint my sister was on a dating site....I don't know people who use those sites.

I do NOT think that men can't help themselves, nor do I think it is acceptable behavior.
I am not sure what you are referring to as the problem that I don't see. People sending pictures of their privates IS a problem. Is totally unacceptable and should be illegal.

I am 70.....so I grew up in a different age. My daughter is a psycho therapist, former CASA, and has a thriving private practice. I was talking with her tonight about her thoughts about sending penis pictures. Her response was close to mine. Who would do that? And who would want to see that? Is it suitable for framing? No one she knows (that she knows of) participate in that kind of thing. That it occurs is certain. But it is possible to be a person who has no direct experience with this.

Listen, I had not heard of Golden Showers until 4 years ago. I am not denying that this stuff happens. I am simply astounded that it does. No matter how you slice it, it is moronic behavior.

No-one I know personally would do it but then how do you know? However yep the dating sites are full of men who do it. As well as women who have no problem showing stuff as well. Maybe it is a generational thing.

But your posts do come across as excusing me about their behaviour. Again maybe a generational thing. When people are making comments about it that is perception that is being conveyed.

Just last week a friend of my posted a message with a picture of a guy. She was asking anyone who was friends with him to delete him as he had just sent her a picture of him playing with his balls. She is in her thirties, married, and the mother of two little girls. Go figure

Many of my female cousins have told me they have received unsolicited pics of mens genitals, usually accompanied by compliments of their looks. It happens quite often for younger people today living normal everday lives.

AFAIK, James/Cipres are currently in Europe doing shows.

I doubt if he will ever return to Florida now so not sure law enforcement could do much unless France cooperates.

If France refuses an extradition request (should it get that far), the next best thing would be to wait and see if Cipres is arrested in a country that honors an international warrant or from Interpol. The U.S. got close when the Swiss arrested Polanski but unfortunately in the end the U.S. lost the extradition request IIRC.

I do get FB friend requests from time to time from men I don't know. I don't add them. If we have a mutual friend, I might look at their profile, but just having a mutual friend isn't a guarantee of anything....the friend might have added them w/o knowing them. If i've never met the person and they don't have any connection to me (ex: same college/grad school, skating), then I delete.

Surprise and amazement - there is finally a figure skating article in the Daily Mail! (which used to be a regular occurrence when British figure skating was last very successful in the 1970’s and 1980’s). The bad news is that it is in relation to something as squalid as this!

Quote from article below: “Polanski’s case is a bit different from Snowden’s. Polanski is a French citizen, Snowden is a US citizen. France and the US do have an extradition treaty, and it is Polanski’s French citizenship that seems to be the only thing keeping him secure (France does not extradite its own citizens)”

"La Fédération (française des sports de glace) gère la situation avec lui, il a pris un avocat et il ne compte pas se laisser faire"

"FFSG will handle this situation together with him, he (Cipres) hired a lawyer, and will not let this slide" (won't let it go, plans to defend himself).

Someone just appeared in the GoldenSkate Cipres thread stating that this was all a big old mistake and not to rush to judgment that could ruin 4 people’s lives, but refusing to provide any actual facts due to “privacy” concerns. I wonder if they’ll find their way here, too.

It would seem to me that if the accusations against Zimmerman et.al, were false, it wouldn't have been a publicist who contacted Brennan and USA Today, but an attorney with a slander suit.

Slander is really difficult to win in the US, the plaintiff has to prove that the journalist deliberately published a story s/he knew to be untrue. It’s why outraged people sue in the UK if they can and our dear prez has threatened to change the US libel laws.

I was in my ‘50s online dating when a younger man sent me one, back in the mid-00s. I was shocked and revolted. I didn’t know it was a thing and am still puzzled by any guy who thinks it’s a turn-on.

Irrespective of the situation and the outcome, anyone in the public eye is at risk of having their reputation targeted.

Whether the facts are true or not, you only have to look at scandal magazines that make all sorts of claims about celebrities.

This has certainly been a rocky year for skating's public image.

UMMM yes! and thank G-d! You are saying that sending pictures of a hairy dick is common? Not in my universe. Who would want to send that and who would want to get that?

The first time I saw a dick pic was in a psychology class in 1982 or thereabouts. The guy sitting behind me pulled an actual photo out of his wallet to show me.

I also got flashed a few times when I was young and was once accosted by a rubber in my friendly neighborhood drugstore.

So it's not a big shock to me that dick pics are a thing on social media. But in case you need more information on this, here's an article and another article. I can supply more if you can't Google for yourself.

Complete strangers generally don't send dick pics (and that isn't what happened here, either), but men will send them to women they know only via social media. Or women they are interested in; some of them think it's flirting.

Email is not how it's usually done, either.

How many of you know someone who has sent or received pictures of a random person's penis?

Me many times over. Most of them are students. But I have a friend who likes to chat with random people online when she plays games like WWF and she has received quite a few, too.

Can we link here? If so, I can send a screencap. Also, I’m warning you because the info came up in VM fan wars. It was literally just a brief comment that Morgan hooks up with underage girls. That wasn’t really in the accusations I read, so, it will probably get worse.

Sorry for the double post, but please DO NOT drag gossipy, unsubstantiated comments from other forums here, either in links or just reporting what is being said.
