Chinese skating news & social media updates pt. 5, 2023 onwards

Welp, big fat baby Huang Yihang gets another year in juniors, as if the Chinese junior pairs scene isn't crowded enough. Bummed for the other promising Luan Bo baby pairs.
They are also eligible for the Milan Olympics. If they still keep that technical level at that time(quad twist, harder SBS combo), they will be a major threat to Peng/Wang for the Olympic spot. However, I still question Huang’s fitness level and work ethic.

^^THIS. And the fact that his partner is 16 and still has growing to do. Even if they look good on paper now Huang has never been known for his consistency

Well, continuing with the ‘no answers to whether Xiangyi's training jumps or not' tradition: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1Ez421z7DY?p=1

Someone uploaded off-ice dance videos.

I wonder if she's trying to switch disciplines to solo ID and then proper ID?
OK, she seems to be training jumps!

The JGP selection for pairs will happen at the first Interclub league competition next week. 6 teams will vie for 3 slots (technically only the top 2 are guaranteed slots).

Entry list:
1. YANG Yixi/DENG Shunyang
2. CHEN Meishuyu/WANG Zhiyu
3. WANG Yunjie/LIU Helin
4. GUO Rui/ZHANG Yiwen
5. ZHANG Jiaxuan/HUANG Yihang
6. ZHANG Xuanqi/FENG Wenqiang

All familiar names besides Chen/Wang, who are new. Wang previously skated with SHI Wenning and medalled on the JGP last season before splitting.

"People who caught my eye on the entry lists of Station 1"

YU Xinyi/LIU Tianyi - intact
They seem to be on the lists as a senior ID team, and they're intact.

The Hong Kong ID team (Kang/Chau) are on the junior ID list.

Han Wenbao on the junior men's list; Gao Shiqi, Zhang Ruiyang, and Wang Yihan (Beijing) on the junior women's list.

Where is @Gris :blah:

On the junior ID list, the Hong Kong team seems to be there?

Now why did you quote me before I re-edited it. :drama:

But I was looking at the station 1 lists, because Otis only posted the junior pairs. But then I couldn't find it, so I deleted it so I could find the lists again...
Because I was confused! But it would be a good idea to start a thread in Kiss n Cry for the Chinese Interclub Series since it seems to be starting soon! :)

LI Xuantong’s new partner Grigorii Rodin has been in China and registered as an athlete in Century Star Skating Club. They are now eligible to compete in interclub competitions this month.

Nini will debut her solo ice dance performance in the interclub competition in Xi'An this week.
She will keep competing in Single skating in interclub competitions in Qingdao and Chengdu, the COC pre-selection competition.
It seems that she will recycle her “Curse of the Golden Flower” program in her season debut in single skating.

More than 10 girls can nail harder triple-triples and 5 types of triple jumps right now. That is something you couldn't imagine 4 and 5 years ago when only 2 or 3 girls in Chinese women's single skating could barely land 5 types of triple jumps in the nationals

For anyone looking for summary of jr pairs events: unsurprisingly Zhang/Huang won by almost 20 points (161) they really r a contender for jgp final and wjc podium given that their sp was a disaster (fall on both jumping elements).
Zhang/Feng (choreo by Sui and kinda a baby Sui/Han w a level 4 Forward Outside Death Spiral) were 2nd and will get one assignment. Like most Chinese teams they struggle with jumps having a 2A as their highest but it’s under rotated.
Even though they finished last and didn’t make the 100 point barrier Chen/Wang have lots of potential for only being together less than 3 months and her having visibly little to no pair experience (had clean 3T and 2A, they need to work on twists lifts throws and death spiral but they have rly good foundations so maybe come next year or even nationals we can see significant improvement).
The acrobats Yang/Deng came in 3rd improving on last season but they unfortunately just have much lower quality foundations which inhibits a lot of their progress.
Guo/Zhang are another sui baby team but they have even worse jumps so they were 4th
Wang/Liu for those who watched JGP last season they were like 10th and they have improved but still r slow and they didn’t reveal any new elements afaik and they were 5th - I wouldn’t be shocked to see this team split and idk why they haven’t alrdy (no offense to either of them but they don’t really seem to click or learn the elements fast enough to keep up)

Sorry but pairs is much more than just jumps. I disagree that having strong jumps is "good foundation" and "potential" for pairs. Here's my take on the pairs event:

Zhang/Huang were obviously primed (and expected) to take top spot. I will take their scores here with a bucket of salt and would expect some serious deflation when they reach the international stage. Despite bombing the SP with a fall on the throw and downgraded fall on the 2A they still won the SP over a clean Zhang/Feng. Zhang/Feng won the technical score in the SP but Zhang/Huang scored 6 points more in PCS (undeservedly imo) to win the SP despite 2 falls. Zhang/Huang went clean in the FP to take the win by a mile (as expected).

The second spot was always going to be a skate-off between Zhang/Feng, Guo/Zhang and Yang/Deng. Yang/Deng being the more experienced team who went to JWC and JGP in the past two seasons but with lower technical content than the two new baby pairs that are moving up to juniors this year. Yang/Deng went mostly clean besides a few scratchy landings on the throws, but their lower tech content is not holding up anymore against the babies who are going for triple twist + two triple throws + FoDs + SBS 2A. Yang/Deng's strength is in lifts, but the babies can also hit the levels in their lifts even if they are not as strong as Yang/Deng's. Having not secured a JGP spot, Yang/Deng (who are also senior eligible) are expected to compete for the COC host spot at the fifth interclub league competition.

Although none of Zhang/Feng, Guo/Zhang and Yang/Deng went completely clean, Zhang/Feng came away with the JGP slot thanks to fewer mistakes and higher BV. Zhang/Feng have now upgraded their SBS jump in the SP to 2A (they were only doing 2F and 2Lo previously) while Guo/Zhang downgraded theirs (they did SBS 2A in the SP at the NWG but reverted to 2F here because their 2A is almost always <). Zhang/Feng fumbled on their 2A and 3LoTh in the FP but landed an amazing 3FTh which was enough to secure second. Guo/Zhang falling on their 3FTh and missing their combo caused them to end up in fourth (also a really boring new Bolero FP didn't help). Both teams still have their gorgeous FoDs as before.

The biggest news and takeaway from this selection trial is that coach Luan Bo (previously coach of Zhang/Huang, Zhang/Feng, Guo/Zhang etc. a.k.a. the Qiqihar teams) appears to have retired. We kinda saw this coming from the pairs camp that happened earlier in may when she was not listed as the coaching staff of the Qiqihar teams, but the latest development is that her teams have been split into two new camps (most likely combined to be known as the new pairs "national team"). Two camps are headed by Ding Yang (also coach of Peng/Wang) who is now listed as head coach of Zhang/Huang, Zhang/Feng and Wang/Liu; and Guan Jinlin who is listed as head coach of Yang/Deng, Guo/Zhang and Luan/Ge. I am not confident that either of these are strong replacement coach for Luan Bo, Ding is pretty much untested and Guan has a terrible reputation and track record (and also never skated pairs himself). Personally I feel like the technical quality of all the teams in this competition has gone down as compared to their performances from the NWG earlier this year. Everyone is more hesitant and scratchy going into the elements, with less flow and speed than before. This is the most worrying takeaway from this selection trial.

Getting their SBS jumps fully rotated is a problem for almost everyone across the board, so no one was really 'clean' in this department. From the protocols:
Zhang/Huang: 3Tq+2Aq+2T,
Zhang/Feng: 2Aq in both SP and FP
Guo/Zhang: 2A<
Wang/Liu: 2Fq+1Eu+2S
Chen/Wang: 3Tq+1T+2T
