Canadian Pairs 2017/2018 Season News and Updates

They scored better in their long today but I continue to feel nothing watching their long.
They skate like they hardly know each other with this program.

I thought they had a bit of an edge over the non-D/R pairs coming into the season being seeded on the GP and being top Canadian team at world's last year. Any perceived advantage they had is now gone, IMHO.

I have to think the 3 teams on the podium at Nationals go to Korea, straight up.

Game on, kids...

A propos of nothing, Luba skated the long in her SP dress from 2015 (Feeling Good). Does this just mean not enough time to get a replacement dress for this event or uncertainty relative to the fate of this program? #speculation

I HOPE UNCERTAINTY! This LP is terrible. They should go back to last year's, it was so beautiful, the judges handed out the points regardless of how poor the jumps were!

Interesting. What did she wear at SC? I don't remember. Also I noticed she ditched the very juvenile looking hairdo she had for the LP at SC.

I'm pretty sure I've seen Dylan ask her a couple time leaving the ice, what happened on the toe or what happened with the salchow. I think it's a bad idea on his part to ask her that as they're leaving the ice. She already has issues with the jumps, don't make it worse. Also he seems annoyed with her most of the time. Maybe because of the jump issues? Though it's not like he's a pillar of consistency on them either.

I cringe to think what they must have paid Bezic and David Wilson (is that who did it?) for their choreo. It's a mess of a program.

Yes, she wore that at Skate Canada as well. That dress doesn’t suit the program at all, so I would assume it’s a placeholder (or they’re ditching the program). She had a different outfit on that was new at Finlandia though.

When does he seem annoyed with her? Their long program is all about her dumping him and him being upset about and trying to change her mind so he is supposed to be annoyed.

Her costume at Finlandia was kinda cute and fit the program but I know on this forum there was a lot of griping about it so maybe they rec'd bad feedback from others and went back to an old one while they did a new one.

I noticed it as well, a couple of times during last season. Dylan asks something while still in the ending pose or on the way to take their bows and Luba almost imperceptibly shook her head (there were pops during the program). I can understand the urge, but it doesn't take a degree in psychology to know to bite your tongue in that moment.

As they're coming off the ice. He seemed very frustrated at Skate Canada.
I saw that too at SC...I just love I/M, but their body language just seems really off and their interactions almost cold. The kiss and cry with the coaches also seems very frosty. It is hard to sell a romantic program with that kind of tension. When they did a run-thru without jumps at SC practice session, I loved the LP. I hope they can find there way back to where they were last season. It doesn't look like much fun anymore.

I just get the sense Dylan is tired/over it. Knowing how competitive he is, he likely stayed in post-KMT because he thought he could still climb the ranks in World pairs, but now the writing is on the wall that even if they were to make the Oly team, he and Lubov will finish lower than the 5th he did in Sochi. I imagine this knowledge would make training days seem long, and poor skates more frustrating.

Too bad for those SBS jumps, their other elements are quite lovely!

Challenge is next week in Pierrefonds.

Here is the link for the starting orders:f
https://skatecanada.ca/fr/defi-patinage-canada-2018/

and the Schedule:
https://skatecanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Horaire-Défi-2018-NOV-21-FR.pdf

In Pre-novice pairs, 2 pairs are clearly in the lead and should end-up first and second (based on this year scores) in this order.
Camille Audelin-Dubé / Loucas Éthier QC
Jamie Fournier / Gabriel Farand-Paul QC

There is a strong group of Novice this year, IMHO most of the 5 best being good enough to finish in the middle of the junior ranking. Best results from this year:
1 Brooke McIntosh / Brandon Toste Canadian Ice Academy/Toronto CS & SO 38.26 (1) 73.40 (1) 111.66
2 Marine Pouliot / Alexandre Simard Lorraine/La Pocatière QC 36.59 (1) 67.46 (1) 104.05
3 Camille Perreault / Bryan Pierro Magog/St‐Hubert QC 36.48 (2) 66.40 (2) 102.88
4 Sophia O'Brien‐Doerksen / Josh Venema (2017 N3) 34.32 (1) 63.82 (1) 98.14
5 Mackenzie Ripley / Owen Brawley St Thomas FSC/Kitchener - Waterloo S SO 34.73 (2) 59.34 (2) 94.07

10 points behind or more:
Veronique Turbide / William St-Louis Les Tourne-sol/CPA Tourne-Sol 29.34 (3) 56.13 (3) 85.47
Emi Swanson / Raine Eberl Skate Regina/Skate Regina SK 29.97 (3) 48.33 (3) 78.30
Minel Senses / Samir Andjorin Town of Mount‐Royal/Laval QC 24.79 (3) 52.01 (3) 76.80
Others are too far behind for any podium hope.

11 pairs are registered in Junior
Gabrielle Levesque / Pier-Alexandre Hudon QC
Patricia Andrew / Paxton Knott ON
Chloe Panetta / Steven Lapointe QC
Chloe Choinard / Mathieu Ostiguy QC
Mariah McCaw / Steven Adcock ON
Isabella Mancini / Christian Reekie ON
Katherina Frantz / Nicolas Frantz QC
Olivia Boys-Eddy / Mackenzie Boys-Eddy O
Gabriella Marvaldi / Daniel Villeneuve QC
Lori-Ann Matte / Thierry Ferland QC
Alison Schumacher / Zachary Daleman ON

and 4 in Senior
Camille Ruest / Drew Wolfe QC
Sydney Kolodziej / Maxime Deschamps QC
Julianne Seguin / Charlie Bilodeau QC
Evelyn Walsh / Trennt Michaud ON
WD Shalena Rau / Johann Wilkinson ON

For now, I will leave others to comments on the Jr and Sr.

Probably not a bad idea for Seguin and Bilodeau to get another competition in for Canadians, hopefully one where they skate well to leave a good impression in the judges eyes. Moore-Towers and Marinaro likely don't need to do so especially since they will be in Lake Placid this weekend. And while Iliusheshkina & Moscovitch could use another competition, their time is probably better spent changing programs (please!)

And with the final GP complete...all 3 teams' highest total scores are within about a point of each other. I think nationals could be very exciting. :watch:

You guys are going to have to help me out here, because as I said elsewhere, pairs is my least favorite discipline and I don't follow it closely. What exactly is so dreadful about I/M's LP? Is it just that a lot of people don't like the song?

I admit, I do not like the song at all. Also, they have yet to skate it well and it just does not "fit" so it affects the artistry IMHO.

In Novice McIntosh/Toste did a clean "safe" SP to take a good advance

I think safe is the wrong word as that implies they reduced their SP content. Novice SP rules don't allow triple anything so it does not allow for more advanced throws, twists and jumps.

Given these scores it will be interesting to see the in the FS what advanced skills these teams have. They can really show all their skills there. A lot of great promise among the novice and pre-novice pairs though.

You guys are going to have to help me out here, because as I said elsewhere, pairs is my least favorite discipline and I don't follow it closely. What exactly is so dreadful about I/M's LP? Is it just that a lot of people don't like the song?

It starts with the song and lack of chemistry between them to pull off this theme. If you like the song and buy into the illusion that they dig each other in the way Virtue/Moir do, then it's dreamy and romantic.

If you're not feeling any of that, you just look at the program cold from an IJS perspective. Your mind tells you it's more of a show program than IJS. Posing, dramatic embraces, and long highlight moves on two feet. Transitions relatively scarce and not all that difficult. It's OK, but not....really....all....that...impressive. Many of us are left feeling they are capable of so much more.

Nationals is going to 100% decide who goes, it seems. And right now, even I/M go to KOR, I don't see them getting selected for the team event unless they crush the 3rd pair at nationals. I wouldn't put money on that.

It'll be interesting to see if Alison Schumacher will continue on with both pairs and singles through to senior competition.

She could be a good bet for this year's women's singles spot at Junior Worlds (along with Aurora Cotop).
