Canadian Ladies 2017-18 season news & updates

Cotop will need to skate very well at JW to try to get a few more spots for JGP next year. Her ISU PBs are just 48 SP, 96 LP. She's a better skater than that, but I hope pressure doesn't get to her.
She's still just 15 (and her birthday's in July, so she'll be 15 in "ISU years" next year). Her first JGPs were this past season. Much too early for anyone to go senior internationally unless they're dominating at that level or the best skater at the senior level in their own country.

I don't think Skate Canada will rush anyone into the Senior competitions. We have enough promising seniors to give international assignments to.

Larkyn has picked up a sponsor type of thingy

It is nice to see sponsorship money flowing. I know national champions get them, but often it is those just off the podium or just on the podium who really need the extra help. Rumor is that Larkyn has had a few people step up quite substantially this season and it has really helped with her training and her ability to spend in Colorado. Hopefully she will be able to use her experience this season to build some consistency going into next season.

Any word on Veronik Mallet? I hope she can make a comeback. It would have been great to see her battling it out for that third spot.

Looks like Aurora Cotop will finish 17th at Junior Worlds today (still one spot for next year).

Maybe not the worst thing.
Hopefully it inspires not only her but Gran, Schumacher, Bausback and others coming up to have an awesome summer, making some good strides in their development

I believe Vasilisa Matantseva (J8) has left Champs International (8-rinks) and is now being coached by Larkyn Austman’s coach.

Canada was the 12th country in ladies at Junior Worlds:
1 entry in 5 events: ISU Members with Skaters, who qualified for the Final Free Skating, but were not placed in the first ten (10) ISU Members of the previous ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships, may enter one (1) Skater in five (5) events of the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating in the category concerned.

Other than competing senior at nationals, my guess would be no.

She has practically no world ranking as her junior results haven't been good. Getting into senior events will be tough.

The cycle is just starting, so another year in junior to develop and get more competitive experience on the JGP would be my vote.

I don't think she is ready for senior internationals and likely would not have much success (based on her placement at Jr Worlds.)

The new program requirements for 2018/19 are out.

I won't talk about the junior /senior as those changes are only proposals by the ISU.

But the great news is that novices can finally do three jump combos in the FS ( both men and women ).

You can find the changes here.

Weellll..would be real nice if Skate canada sent the girls to int'l competitions so they give their best performances in int'ls instead of mistakes and dialing program in when their performance ability is one of their biggest assets.

I think in Austman’s case she and her team need to take some responsibility. There are a huge number of comps every summer within an easy flight of Vancouver yet she returns to Wild Rose in Edmonton and BC Summerskate. If she had competed at say Glacier Falls and or Golden West every year for the past three years she would have been much better prepared. She need to go out and skate in tough groups in front of tough panels where her spins and steps will be be called a accurately, not friendly local panels.
