Canadian Ladies 2017-18 season news & updates

Anyone notice she has two almost identical versions of the same LP dress? The one she wore at Canadians and in the individual event had darker blue sleeves, whereas the one she wore last year, and in the team comp had royal blue sleeves to match the rest of the dress. I personally prefer the one with the lighter colour.

I was going to suggest they are the same dress under different lighting, but if you look at the waist, the new dress has more of a V while last year’s the crystals are in more of a straight line.

Does anyone else think that Alina and Evgenia were very distant and didn't really congratulate Kaetlyn on her medal?

Legally change her name to Katya Osmondova.
And learn how to speak Russian with a Newfoundland accent! That would be adorable!

As for Gabby, barring injury or illness, there will be another Olympics, and she's only 20, so fans like myself can only hope for the best for her. It was an unexpected downer, considering her recent successes. I hope she can and will rebound from this.

No, not really. There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes that the television cameras do not pick up, or that the viewing public does not observe or have access to. I'm sure congratulations and hugs were exchanged by all backstage, and I wouldn't read too much into this particular Olympics podium behavior. Athletes are usually acutely aware that every facial twitch is being examined for any drama :drama: or discontent.

Wouldnt surprise me after how Diva Pogo didnt really congratulate Ashley in Boston either.. I remember even Diva Tats had to point it out to Pogo that she wasnt being congratulatory...

That podium was 2 Russians as well.

They seem very clicky... like high school girls.. oh wait they are! LOLLLLL Thats why I prefer the grown woman over the girl (teenagers) Gimme some life experiences first please....

Is it a Russian culture thing?

(BTW is Zag even yet to reach high school? 15 yrs old? Hmmm where was I then. lol)

Kaetlyn and Alina seemed to be laughing/joking together just fine on the couches. The cameras picked up a hug between Kaetlyn and Evgenia before the venue ceremony. Not sure what people are seeing here. All seemed perfectly cordial and congratulatory.

@AngieNikodinovLove I'm almost positive Anna apologized to Ashley in the press conference after the medal ceremony in Boston and gave her a hug. I think she just got caught up in the moment and forgot to congratulate her on the podium.

Yes I remember that...She basically had said at that point she was shellshocked and not thinking or feeling..She remedied it right after.

Had to love the internet's new boyfriend (Scott Moir) blowing Gabby a sympathetic kiss from the stands after her skate.

I was kinda nervous. Love Scott, but if you were paying attention, just about every event he attended after his gold (and he was shown in the stands) the Canadian entry performed poorly (curling, hockey....)
After Gabby skated and they showed him I was like 'dude is a jinx. Some pls remove him before KO skates'.

Glad I was jumping the gun.

I think Zhenya did but she speaks English, so it's easier. What I noticed more was the crowd shots showing applause and cheering during her skate, as she's bowing, when scores are read. Tons of audience members dressed in OAR and RUS colors sitting there totally motionless.

I remember the Russian women's curling team ripping on their own fans in Sochi. The skip said they were rude and disrespectful to other athletes, cheering for mistakes and not clapping for any good shots. She was a bit embarassed and went on to say something along the lines of preferring to play events in North America.

So, assuming we keep our third spot (which we should), who will get the third berth? Will Alaine make a comeback? Will Larkyn retain it or will someone else get there.
I am not assuming anything other than that Gabby and Kaetlyn will go to Worlds and likely maintain our third spot. After that, I foresee a possible retirement. I don't see Larkyn becoming competitive internationally particularly with the young Russians who can do quads and other skaters able to do triple axels. I think that Gabby and Alaine have the best shot of increasing their technical elements to compete internationally.

I think Gabby will be very motivated for worlds after her disappointment in Korea. I think while not a given, maintaining three spots is very doable.

Of course I hope Alaine will continue on and will get back to worlds next year.

It's worth noting that Austman's worlds TES minimums will expire after this season. In addition to Daleman, Osmond, and Chartrand - Pineault has the worlds minimums that will still be valid for 2019. Hopefully Austman will skate better at worlds, make the free skates, and renew her worlds minimums - and improve her season best ranking (she's 8th among Canadians on the list, if I counted correctly).

Fall internationals will give us a better idea of who might get a potential third spot in 2019 (and who is eligible based on TES minimums).

Only Osmond and Daleman will be guaranteed grand prix assignments next year. Chartrand is only 50th on the list so I'm doubtful she'll get a non host pick. I think I say this every year but I hope someone "new" gets the Skate Canada assignment this year.

I'm hoping for a successful return from Kim Decelles, who posted a video on instagram and she seems to be getting her triples back.

Doesn't Emy Decelles have her mins as well?

It's critical to get our young skaters out there and get them experience. Skate Canada wasted no time in getting Kaetlyn exposure and experience when she was new. We need to develop the Ladies.

I agree with you.

Junior worlds are coming up soon so how well Cotop places and therefore how many JGP spots we get will have an impact on assignments.

This past season, Skate Canada sent a lot of women to senior internationals (Osmond, Daleman, Chartrand, Austman, Tamura, Long, Pineault, E Decelles). I thought Kim Deguise Leveillee was overlooked during last season and she ended up a close 6th at nationals (highest placing skater without an international assignment). So I would love to see all of the above, plus Kim Decelles, on the challenger circuit next year!

Assuming Olivia Gran competes senior next year, I could see her being in the mix for that third spot. Hopefully SC will make sure she has an opportunity to get the senior minimums. I suspect there will be a push for her to get the junior Worlds spot. I just don’t want another senior skater who is not as good get a trip to senior worlds because an up and comer isn’t given the opportunity to get the minimums.

The only people this year that that applies to are Walsh/Michaud, who placed high enough to go to 4CC, but didn't have the minimums.

I don't know if you're right that there will be a push for Olivia to get the JW spot. There's also Alison Schumacher. I don't really see a reason to push one over the other.

Anyways, for the 3rd spot, if Alaine skates like she did at 4CC this year, I'd expect that would be enough.

Oh I don't see this at all.
She had a really difficult past season and she's very young and unproven internationally at any level. Although she's aesthetically awesome and has jumps, she lacks speed and power. She may still have some PCS in the 5s on the JGP which spells more development needed. So let's pause and let that happen.

Love her but if there is any skater I see SC being cautious with, it's her. She still seems to be regaining her love for and commitment to skating. A bit vulnerable still to be pushed, is how it looks from the outside.

She needs a full junior year under her belt so I would focus on skating JGP and bidding for JW spot(s). Forget Senior entirely.

It could be a good opportunity to develop our other skaters and make the most of the third berth.

What about Cotop? Is she likely to enter senior competition?

Other than competing senior at nationals, my guess would be no.

She has practically no world ranking as her junior results haven't been good. Getting into senior events will be tough.

The cycle is just starting, so another year in junior to develop and get more competitive experience on the JGP would be my vote.

Sounds like a good idea. Don't rush them. We have several promising seniors who could get assignment. Let the youngsters develop
