Canadian Ladies 2017-18 season news & updates

Yes.

So, the main question for Alaine is what's next? How can she bounce back from this season?

It sounds like what would really help her is to get away from her family, and to be able to make decisions for herself about her own skating. As much as I would like to see that happen, not sure how likely or feasible that is....

Now I'm craving poutine.

I've heard Alaine's father on the radio and he sounds like a totally committed parent and did not strike me as unreasonable. Basically they would drive together in a trailer to Toronto/Barrie to get some coaching on the weekends. The schedule sounded gruelling, but as I recall, it was to accommodate Alaine's schooling. If her schooling is done (I have no idea if she is pursuing post-secondary studies), I don't see why she has to move to B.C.

I do think McLeod did wonders for controlling Annie Bellemare's jumps and her axel leg wrap, but Annie also came with great edges and skating skills. When I saw Alaine C in person, her glide was strikingly inferior to Kaetlyn and Gaby's - it would be great if she could find a coach who would work on this.

My wife and I do not like going to the ballet and we also don't like classical movies or weird foreign movies that you have to read like a book. That is not what entertains me! I prefer figure skating, table tennis (just like Galustyan!), and shopping for pant suits with my wife.

:D Pant suits for your wife, presumably! You are a patient man or woman.

Kaetlyn Osmond is a wonderful skater ballerina or not and I think the look of a mature lady on the ice is sensational!

ITA. Kaetlyn comes across as very genuine on the ice, and I think that isn't so easy for top lady skater, as they're so often focused on creating a persona that fits the feminine stereotype and looking like that stereotype (sometimes results in too much mascara, IMO).

I wonder if now days "mature lady" is a code term for a skater with fuller body (and those damn skinny youngsters are taking away her medals)..... Does that mean Sasha Cohen at 22 (same as Osmond) did not look mature? or did she? Cohen's body did not change with age...
both @ 22 years of age..

Slow cooker poutine?? That can't be. Fries must be crispy, you will spoil it for our ladies. Beside poutine really is from Quebec and none of our girls are from La Belle Province... I am kidding of course, you do as you please!

Sorry...but I like my fries in poutine soggy.

That may be true, but Tamura’s SS are not nearly as bad as Coltop’s.

At least Cotop's team picks appropriate music. Whoever thought that Tamura could handle Firebird was smoking something insane. It was the most ridiculous FP I've ever seen...I felt so bad for her trying to skate to that music.

Well I would put Cotop trying to skate to Clair de Lune in the same category.

Seriously? Clair de Lune is not a HUGE orchestral piece... I'm not saying it was the perfect selection for her... but giving a juniorish skater a huge orchestral, fast, piece makes zero sense to me.

Cohen fit the definition of the 'baby ballerina', which by definition does not denote maturity.

It is a style of skating. I think 'mature skater' refers to a style as well, not a body type. For example, Kostner has always been lean and lithe, but her skating had a maturity to it every when she was young and gangly.

After having watched Pineault’s lp at 4CC, I keep asking to myself what she could achieve more if she was with Orser. Yvars has done a good job as she has great lines, flexibility and power, but she needs to be in a competitive environment so she can blossom fully. I see many great things in her, but she is not yet cooked and 18 is a very good age to make that move. It’s now or never, prepraing for 5e next quads and being where Daleman is now.

Cotop's SS are way better than Tamura. She skates upright, first of all, and can generate some speed, although it comes from 43 crosscuts in rapid succession. She can totally do Clair de Lune. Perfect for her although her presentation is still junior with the OTT arm and upper bod moves that needs to be settled down with maturity. Net net she has tools to work with.

Tamura gives me heart pains. I mean there is 'something' there in terms of talent but so. much. needs. to. be. fixed. I wouldn't know where to start. I agree, 4s would be generous in PCS.

I think Alaine can only strive to be a 10-20 pct better version of what she is. What she really needs is to start from scratch on SS and jumps. And then give her ballet and fix her hands so her fingers aren't always fused together. I'd make her skate every program with jazz hands 100% of the time just to break her of tendencies.
But this is a two year process at least, and I'm not sure if she'd be up for breaking her skating down to that level with no guarantee of returns. I think we'll just see her pray KO wins an Olympic singles medal and retires or otherwise continues to generate 3 worlds spots with Gabby, counting on Austman, Tamura, Cotop and Gran never amounting to anything.

Sigh.

:drama:

I like what Larkyn Austman, Aurora Cotop and Olivia Gran have all shown this season, and I hope Austman and Cotop enjoy their next competition(s) to the max! :kickass:

Seriously, can't we give them a chance before writing them off? Especially as Cotop hasn't even competed at the Senior level. It's like some people think our skaters aren't as strong as Japan or Russia so they must be bad

Austman, needs some serious work on her PCS, shes missing the feeling in her programs, she looks super nervous too. I dont know if thats whats holding her back? Austman isnt young either. Shes 19, will be 20 next season. Its not like shes just 15 coming into sr for the first time.

Yes I agree, but also, she left skating for over a year, started coaching and then wanted to make a come back. So at 19, I think she has missed a couple of years to refine/mature. Comps. are the best way to progress and to motivate. Austman in social media this year declared, "This Is My Year". I have seen much improvement in her jumps and her command of programs, and with an Olympic experience under her belt, she def. has achieved her goals for the year.
