Isn't one of the rumours that SCI will be in Halifax? I'm kind of hoping so because I can crash at a good friend's place if that's the case.

Yes. That’s the rumour I’m having no luck confirming but dying to know.

They definitely have trained professionals at high level competitors. Sports doctors, physiotherapists and athletic therapists. They don’t get paid though (maybe the organizing medical person does). This includes worlds. The physiotherapist was telling me about how people would refuse to volunteer as it meant giving up their evenings and weekends for free and being at risk of being liable if something went wrong. So it’s interesting to me that there is 4 million for salaries, but they won’t pay professionals without whom a safe event would not be possible.

Super super late to this, and a bit thread drifty, but my wonderful skate tech, the late Jim Reid, was skate tech for Vancouver and DC Worlds. He turned down the 2010 Vancouver Olympics because he was expected to volunteer his time, which meant closing down his shop for the duration, and they wouldn't even cover a hotel in Vancouver when he was looking at an hour and a half commute each way. He'd had it with not being paid. It's amazing, really, with all that money floating around, that they'd nickel and dime professionals like that.

Having zero desire to go back to Kanata, I would be overjoyed if Halifax gets to host an event again. There doesn't seem to be anything booked at the Scotiabank Centre from Oct. 25 - 27/24.

Skate Canada is pleased to announce a new national event – the Skate Canada Trophy – as part of the 2024-2025 competition season. This event will bring together the former Novice Canadian Championships and Skate Canada Challenge – Pre-Novice/Novice events under one umbrella.

This new event will showcase Canada’s top up-and-coming talent in novice and pre-novice men’s and women’s singles, pair, and ice dance. The first edition of the Skate Canada Trophy is scheduled to take place at the Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre in Edmonton, Alta., from February 6-9, 2025 and will see new Canadian champions crowned at the novice level.

The existing Skate Canada Cup will expand to encompass crowning new Canadian champions at the novice level of synchronized figure skating, as well as Skate Canada Cup champions in the gold and open categories.

“We’ve listened to our Podium Pathway community and are excited to announce this more streamlined competition format for our novice and pre-novice skaters, and to continue to enhance the competition format for synchronized skating in Canada,” said Shae Zukiwsky, Senior Director, Performance Excellence at Skate Canada.

The existing qualifying structure for the Pre-novice/Novice Challenge will be used for the Skate Canada Trophy. More details on this event will be released in the coming months.

Rob Brodie’s latest substack article: A Skate Canada 'state of the union' chat

“We definitely want to get our skaters out competing more domestically; we have a lot of events in Canada. Elvis (Stojko) and I were talking at Worlds, and he said he was always asked ‘how do you become a good competitor,’ and he said ‘by competing.’ He’s one that can say that from experience,” said Slipchuk. “We’re definitely going to work on utilizing the opportunities to compete at home, just to get that mileage and get that confidence for the athletes, so that when they get out on that bigger stage, they just feel that they can put down those programs to the level they’re capable of. It’s always learning and it’s always looking at opportunities we have at home, and we’re going to keep doing it.”

IMHO, this is definitely a good plan. I don’t know if it made the livestream, but during the gala intermission at Nats, Ted Barton and Nam Nguyen were discussing the need for our skaters to compete more often. Nam commented that for him, it didn’t matter if the event was in Thornhill, or Tokyo, the competition nerves were the same.

I hope they will host Autumn Classic again even if it isn’t part of the challenger series. They could start by maximizing Canadian entries in the events they host.

The more mileage programs have in a competitive setting, the better.

I think we are quite spoiled these days in a way by the live streaming of a lot of these Challenger Series-type events. Many of the smaller fall competitions were really designed so that skaters could test out new programs in relative anonymity and get feedback on what worked and what needed to go back to the drawing board. That's an important part of any skater's journey.

It doesn't really matter if that happens at a series of simulations in Canada or the Applesauce Invitational in Oklahoma... but it does need to happen more frequently than it is.

Which event do you mean? The Centre Slush Puppie is in Gatineau and is hosting the next gen camp and competition in July. Incidentally it's the same venue that is hosting the Canadian Gymnastics Championships in a few weeks time.

Skate Canada did not include the 2024 NextGen Competition & Camp in Gatineau, QC among the "six competitions that will make up its domestic events calendar for the 2024-2025 season" in their press release. I only copied out those 6 competitions in my post that were listed at the end of the release.

Is it possible they just didn’t list it? I went for the first time last year - half of the arena seats were blocked. They for sure could have packed the arena. I’m surprised they won’t host it again.
